Hmmm. Nice profile.
Mine is
M/28/610/3.5 years experience (I started late)/ little international experience/ fluent in French/ senior software engineer/ Bsc from a little tiny university in Africa.

They said my GMAT score doesn't correlate with the overall quality of my application. I should retake the GMAT and reapply for September 2012.

I'm so torn right now. I got an interview with Richard Ivey in Canada and I think they'll take me. They asked me to raise my GMAT too if I can before school starts.

Should I go for Ivey (April-2012) or reapply for INSEAD (September-2012)? Mind you that both schools have the same tuition fees and INSEAD has an elective that I want. Economics and political science.
Advise me please. Thanks.

So ... I'll post my profile:

Jan 2012 R3 applicant

29 years old, Male, GMAT: 720 (Q:48, V: 40) - 6 years WE (multiple countries), Bachelor in Top 10 US program (Computer Science), Origin: SEAsia, fluent in 4 languages and not even an interview invite.

Anybody think reapplication will be useless?

The only weakness I can think of: I resigned from my job (personal choice) back in March and spend the next few months traveling
- talk about risking it everything for INSEAD huhh.

Well your profile in summary looks pretty good. Your resignation after 6 years of work should not be a huge problem IF handled properly. I can only assume that your essays were the problem. If you don't properly "sell" your profile you can destroy your chances, at the same time, someone with a poorer profile, IF presented very well through the essays has a chance of admission. Bottom line, I would get some advice on my essays. Regarding reapplication, my understanding is that if you reapply for the next intake (Sept) then you only submit the last essay but if you reapply for next Jan then you could submit all the essays which might be what you need...

I faced the same situation during R2 but fortunately for me there was a R3. So, I had 10 days to study and retake the GMAT. I got a 700 with Q47 and all is going well now.
Regarding Richard Ivey I doubt it can compete with the likes of Harvard, Wharton, Stanford, LBS, INSEAD etc. (i.e. Tier 1 MBAs) and if it costs the same it def has much lower value for money compared to INSEAD. My advise is for you to improve in all the areas you mentioned and I am sure that if you reapply you will have a good chance of admission. You def need to increase your GMAT and then any other improvement (more work experience which you will have when you reapply, and maybe there is something you can do about the international experience also). The good news is that they liked your application else they would not send that email but improve anything you can so you can seal the deal (remember to aim on at least 45 on the quantitative section of the GMAT if not more). Good luck!

I just got dinged :( On the email they refuse to give out any reasons...I thought they usually tell you what areas to work on if u want to re-apply. Does that mean I'm not even close?

My understanding is that this happens when the essays are not good. You can have a great profile and GMAT but if you don't do well with your essays its a major issue. For example if you cannot convince them about your motivation then there is not point pointing out any area of improvement. What could they say? Something like this maybe: "If next year you have a better idea about your future goals and better reasons of pursuing an MBA at INSEAD please reapply". I can't say for sure this was the problem but I guess it could have been something among these lines.

That makes sense. I actually thought my essays were the strongest area of my application. But it's hard to say since I have not seen essays from other applicants.s

Have other people read your essays? I had my essays for three schools read about 10 friends. Some were very gentle with their corrections, they had me tweak words here and there. A few were very opinionated, sometimes convincing me to re-write essays from scratch. Their input really helped me to understand how people could view me through my words (sometimes very different from what I intended). Try giving it out to friends who'll be honest and harsh.

Also, from my experience with proof reading others' essays, I suggest that you try to give it to people with varied backgrounds, in terms of nationality as well as work experience. Sometimes we forget how much jargon/culture we internalize and take for granted.

Good luck.

I had 3 people read my essays. The main points I tried to focus on were keeping the essays personal and an accurate representation of who I am.

I also noticed another person who got dinged is an engineer too...not sure if that's related.

anyway, good luck to other R3ers :)

Thanks for the input. I really believe as well that INSEAD and IVEY are not in the same league. That's why I'm willing to improve my GMAT. That was actually the only thing that was wrong. I'll only submit my profile section and Essay 7. I can just write Not Applicable in the other sections. I'll reapply and see how that goes.

It's good to have people review your essays and make them about you. But it's more important to answer to what INSEAD is looking for in a candidate .
Academic Capacity (I.e. GMAT)
Leadership Potential and Professional Experience (Career progression and responsibility at work)
International Outlook
Ability to Contribute to the INSEAD Experience( What makes you unique)
When I wrote the first batch of my essays, my friend that reviewed them was harsh. She sent me back rewriting them. But she gave me a very nice tip; To write next to the essay question skills that you want the reader to find in the essay. I.e. Leadership, Fast learner, hard worker etc etc. As you write your essay, refer to that and support them with examples.
That should get you out of trouble.

I resigned and traveled for over a year and I was admitted, so I don't think that alone would be enough to deny you. Did you address this travel in any of your essays? I covered it in my optional essay - described my motivations and what I got out of it. I felt like it actually added to my application.
