Thank you for your quick response Shantanu!

The reason I am waiting 2 years to apply is due to the work experience and GMAT prep. I am planning on giving the GMAT this summer and if needed additional time to increase the score. Making up for low GPA will be a bit tough so I want to ensure I give sufficient time to GMAT. Aside from GMAT, I want to be on par with the average work exp at INSEAD. While the GPA is low - I want to ensure that the rest of the profile is on par or above the class profile.

If everything goes as planned - I can also aim to apply January of 2022.

Hi HqLife,

Your profile looks good and I like your transparency about your post-MBA goals and the justification for targeting INSEAD as it will give you plenty of opportunities to grow in your profession, get the best international exposure you can and change your career path (as a good chunk of INSEADers do change their careers post-MBA).

Your GPA is somewhat low, but I'm sure if you score your targeted GMAT, it will fairly compensate for your low GPA as the average GMAT class score is 730. You may want to read this article on the importance of GPAs in MBA applications. It will give you a very good idea of the significance of GPA and how to compensate for lower ones.

On the work front, I can see a lot of good elements that can help you build great stories. Represent your experience in BB as I can see that your groundbreaking ideas have put a huge impact on the organization. It's a big success that has helped the company develop and work smartly. Your leadership skills are evident because of your ability to train your people.

Also, as BMA, I can see a fast career trajectory and incredible recommendations from top-level management. It will help provide good credibility to adcoms about your potential. Put a spotlight on your work that brings importance to the company and has impressed the senior authority to recommend you. Your work experience reflects your commitment to your work and shows your development personally and professionally. In addition, speak of your contribution to the U.S. Army as this can be a unique selling point for you and make you stand out from the applicant's pool.

Also, your international experience is incredibly good. Bring this awareness in your apps and vision. You also tick the box for good ECs and community involvement.

So, as your post-MBA goal is management consulting in Dubai, INSEAD is the best choice out there. Otherwise, other European programs like LBS and IESE can be good choices because of proximity and more frequent cultural/ business exchange (Europeans work in plenty in Dubai and other ME cities) between Europe and ME.

I want to understand why are you waiting for another two years? You've got a good profile and at 23, have a pretty good shot at INSEAD. If you'd like, we are happy to hop on a call with you and discuss your profile in detail. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Profile: 32, Indian Male.
Work Ex 9 years by the time I join INSEAD - Targeting for the Jan 2022 intake
INSEAD is the right fit for me because it is a one year program (I have high work ex), Provides me an entry into EU as that is now a high growth market in my industry

Education: BTECH - IIT BHU, GPA 8.2/10, Graduated in 2012

GMAT - 750 (Q50, V41)

Experience
- 9y in technology outsourcing research and advisory
- Currently leading internal strategy team of a small cap company
- No onshore experience, but I helped international companies open their offices in India (including some well known big names)

Post-MBA goals:
- Short-term: Consultancy with an outsourcing company such as Accenture, Capgemini, etc.
- Long-term: CXO level position in one of the top outsourcing companies
- Geography: Europe / US

Languages
- Fluent in English, Hindi

Extracurricular activities:
- Football (played since school, was part of college team, helped organize college sports fest)

Volunteer
- Actively participation in NGOs teaching underprivileged kids since college
- Past member of Rotary club

Kindly revert regarding the chances of getting in INSEAD. My major concern revolves around the High work-experience + Age and lack of onshore experience.

Thank you.

Hey gmatsj,

First and foremost, your undergraduate GPA of 8.2/10 is pretty impressive and thus boasts of your academic prowess. Moreover, the brand of your undergraduate college - ranking among the top colleges in India, gives your profile a boost as schools tend to pick out applicants from the top schools of each country. In addition to this, an overall GMAT score of 750 is undoubtedly excellent and would set you comfortable in targeting most of the top B schools, including INSEAD.

As for your work experience, since an MBA is a manager's degree and requires significant work experience, your 9 years of work experience in Technology Outsourcing Research and Advisory would put you at par with other applicants. In order to stand out from the crowd, you most certainly should focus on your leadership roles and major projects of your work and how these experiences helped develop and further groom your skills and knowledge. Since you lack big brands in your work experience, you can compensate for the same by providing an apt reason as to why you chose these firms, how you have gone beyond the role, any initiatives you took, and any kind of impact created to showcase an equally competitive profile.

Moreover, you have worked with international clients which covers for your onshore experience and would help differentiate you from the rest of the crowd. Most schools are looking to add diversity to their cohort and your background gives you a unique perspective which definitely acts as a valuable addition to their program.

As for your extracurriculars, you have varied roles in volunteering at NGOs and the Rotaract Club for social welfare, which are impressive value additions. These endeavors showcase your ability to impact others and to empathize with other people. Being a member of the college football team, you can highlight the endeavors that you took in the team and the sports activities you participated in can also be used to highlight your team-building skills along with bringing diversity to the school’s cohort.

Since you graduated a while ago, you can also take up some certifications to upskill yourself and showcase your interest in the field of management. This could further give your profile a boost and provide you with the required competitive edge.

Coming to your chance of acceptance at INSEAD (which falls under the Dream Category), based on your profile, it stands at around 40-50%. That said, in order to hedge your bets wisely, it is always better to target a good mix of at least 6-8 schools.

Some other schools that you can be targeting are - Bocconi, ESADE, IE, HEC, and ESSEC as well.

On this note, while you have a competitive profile, to increase your chances of getting admitted to these schools you would need to ensure that you have a very strong application (consisting of - Essays, LORs, and Resume)that highlights your strengths and overshadows your weaknesses in order to differentiate your profile. You need to showcase your journey, what makes you different from your peers, and how you are a great value addition to the school.

Therefore, in lieu of that, I would recommend you to check out our flagship ALL-IN-ONE service, which has helped 3500+ applicants to get into their dream schools. This service will provide you with end-to-end consulting and unlimited edits on your application documents. Not only that, you’d be connected with B-school alumni who’d be helping you directly with your application process, right from shortlisting the right schools to submitting the application to the school.

Hey Nanim,

Beginning with your profile evaluation, I would say the biggest differentiator in your profile is your international experience. The fact that you have worked entirely overseas bolsters your profile by providing you with an opportunity to showcase your broadened horizons and the ability to succeed and adapt in foreign environments. This aspect of your profile will prove to be an asset while targeting a school like INSEAD that is very keen on breeding diversity in its cohort.

Moving on, as you have not mentioned the company name, I can’t comment on their brand name’s relevancy. A big brand name certainly plays a part in bolstering your profile, as you’d be facing competition from applicants hailing from big4 companies. But in case you don’t have such brand names in your profile, you can utilize your application to draw the focus on the quality of your work. Here, you can talk about how you managed a team of 6 people, how you launched a new vertical for the business in Dubai, your awards, promotions, and impacts you created at various positions.

Moving on, extracurricular participation plays an essential role in strengthening your applications as B-schools are on the hunt for all-rounder profiles. Seeing your extracurricular activities, I’d say you have varied endeavours on this end, which portray your leadership skills, empathetic and proactive attitude.

Coming to your GMAT, 710 is a good score and would open the doors for you to target most of the top business schools especially for your dream school INSEAD where your chances of acceptance are 50%.
On this note, while you are targeting schools abroad, it is always better to hedge your bets wisely and target a mix of dream and competitive schools.
Hence, here are some school suggestions:

Dream: Hec, LBS, Rotman
Competitive: Duke, NYU, Berkeley, Essec, Escp, FSFM

To sum up, I’d say that you have a well built up profile, however, you will be competing with even better profiles, therefore you need to complement your profile with a robust application. An application through its various components such as essays, LORs and SOPs would help you highlight your strengths and give apt justifications for your weaknesses to smooth over your profile flaws. Moreover, the application acts as the window through which the admission committee can peer into your skills, calibre, and personality.

Lastly, since major chances of your acceptance depend on the quality of your application (30%), you might want to seek professional help to secure your spot in your target schools. Our expert services have helped and proved promising to 3500+ applicants to step into their dream schools. Thus you can check out our, All-in-One Solution, a comprehensive end to end consulting solution for all your application woes that could boost your chances of acceptance by a minimum of 3x!

Hi ET27,

Thanks for sharing your profile and MBA aspirations.

My name is Priyanka, Client Manager at ARINGO.

You have a very interesting profile with international exposure! From what I can see:

Academics: We will need to address the low GPA in your applications.

GMAT – Well, INSEAD looks for a GRE score range of 325-329. So, probably you would need to work on your GRE for a stronger application and it will also help to compensate on GPA. 😊

Work Experience – We would like to go through your CV to understand more about the companies you have been associated with, roles & responsibilities, impact, promotions, etc. Also, we would love to know more details on your EdTech startup.

Extracurricular activities/Volunteer Work – Any of EC or community work?

ARINGO has worked with several Turkish candidates in the last years on INSEAD, all successfully 😊, and being Turkish plus your work will be very appealing to INSEAD - as Turkey is an underrepresented country in terms of the number of applicants to INSEAD!

Also, the fact that your brother studied there is a huge plus! And we can use that in many of the essays – although, I do suggest digging in a bit further on why INSEAD ("because my brother studied there" is not a good enough reason)

All in all sounds like you have a good profile! If you send me your CV and other info once you are done with your retake on PRIYANKAK@ARINGO.com, I would love to connect you with our CEO who will be happy to help further with a detailed review and perhaps work together on some amazing apps.

All the best. :)

Hi et27,

You do have a good profile with some unconventional elements. Well, your GPA is obviously low but you can compensate for it through GRE (maybe by retaking). Else, focus and work hard on your other aspects of the application. Being from an unconventional background, you may not have to reattempt GRE and you still can have fair shot at INSEAD.

From your work experience, I can gather some fair idea that you've had a good career trajectory and innovation in you (as your startup idea has got recognitions from experts). I would like to know more about your jobs, roles & responsibilities, initiatives etc you took during your professional experience and about your startup to gauge the impact in your profile.

You have some international experience in your profile which, if used cogently, can be one of your essential selling points. As your startup is targeting different countries, I assume it has a global perspective which INSEAD, or any other international school (say HEC) would love to hear about.

I understand your reason to pursue an MBA from INSEAD. Logically, it has a good record of entrepreneurship and its experience can guide multiple elements of your edtech quest. But I especially liked that you're inspired by its rich culture. You have a personal experience of the school's culture and highlighting it in your application can exhibit your sheer interest in the school. Also, since your own brother is an insead alumnus, you can get a letter of support from him. Alums adding their perspective on the candidates' potential can add good weight to their overall chances.

If you’d like we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and help you get an expert perspective on your overall profile. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Hi all, thank you for this thread.
I would really appreciate a profile review - I am planning to apply for the January 2022 intake in R2.

Ethnicity: Indian
Age : 26
Gender : Male
Target year: January 2022 intake (Will apply in R2 this year)

Academics :
GMAT - 750
Chartered Accountant - 52.4% (Not sure how this would be converted into GPA. Only around 10% of the test takers score more than 50%)

Qualifications :
Chartered Accountant (Indian equivalent of CPA)

Work Experience :
Current job: Deloitte: 1.5 years experience in Transaction Advisory (Due Diligence)
- Worked primarily in the TMT space to assess start-ups in the Tech space for major PE and VC funds
- Was promoted to Deputy Manager within a year based on exceptional performance despite COVID which caused promotions and increments to be curtailed across the firm.

Job post becoming a CA: Wipro: 8 months experience in Investor Relations
- Was responsible for interacting with equity research analysts and investors and ensure sanctity and confidentiality of data shared with external stakeholders

Articleship (3 years of internship): PwC: 3 years experience in Statutory Audit (Internship as a part of Chartered Accountacy course)
- Lead teams in my third year to ensure audits were completed on time and met quality requirements
- Was commended for my work output, receiving exceeds expectations feedback on all assignments

Extra-curriculars:
President of the Literary club in School, School Prefect. Regularly wrote, directed and acted in plays and stand-up at work and other avenues. LGBT, however, there isn't any organization or event I actively participated in. Due to the fact that I have not been to a formal college, I did not develop any ECs..

Story: Was forced to take up CA when I was 18 due to lack of financial resources (CA is a course that does not require much investment) and opposition from my family. Struggled due to the same, moved to a village to study (no plumbing, nearest town was 17km away by a rickety bus etc.) and reduce costs - Cultural shock lead me to learn the importance of hard work and ambition etc. and also recognize my own privileges etc.

Post MBA goals: Work in a consulting or finance in the TMT space where I can combine my passion for innovation and education with finance skills gained through my CA and MBA.

Hi VinayMG256,

I must admit that your profile looks very interesting and accomplished. Your acads are strong and, along with your CA title, they very well declare you a high-performing and intellectual individual. Along with this, your GMAT score is great, which obviously indicates your good academics and it is one of the aspects through which INSEAD evaluates profiles of the candidates.

On the work front, I can see a fast career trajectory in your current job and it reflects your ability to perform and excel in your positions (despite difficult and uncertain times), and also getting recommended by higher authorities. You've got to bring out the elements that tell how you have been a better performer than your peers. Exhibit the responsibilities that you have undertaken in Wipro and have been responsible for upholding the integrity of the organization. Speaking about your internship, I would recommend that you dig deeper and show those instances where you step up in leadership roles. This is going to put forth leadership attributes in your application.

Your ECs are sure to bring power to your profile. I'm sure if you brainstorm these, you're going to get some awesome stories to help your essays stand out! ECs play a very important role in your apps, revealing your diverse personality, and adcoms get to know the various aspects of your personality. It's encouraging to see that you've faced the struggles in your personal life and learned from them that reflects your optimistic personality.

Your clarity about your post-MBA goals is really nice, and your commitment to making an impact by incorporating your passion for education and skills shows your implementation. You must explain it thoroughly to put a mark on the adcoms and make them aware of your ambitions.

Overall your profile is good. There are no pain points or red flags in your story. I would like to know your story in length. We're sure to get some strong points and craft good stories that will differentiate you from the pool of applicants.

If you like we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week and discuss your profile in length and your further chances to INSEAD. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Hi there VinayMG256,

Thank you for providing so much detail here. You have a strong GMAT and some noteworthy company names on your resume. Personal MBA Coach’s founder was a former S&O at Deloitte and we work with a lot of Deloitte consultants every year!

We also send a lot of clients to INSEAD each year. One of the key things to think about here is how INSEAD will help you achieve your post-MBA goals. Business schools want to know how you will make the business world (and the world more broadly) better when you leave their campuses. They also want to know how you will leave a unique mark. I’m glad to see that you have already started to think about your personal story.

If you connect all aspects of your profile into a compelling and consistent story, you should have a strong shot at INSEAD. We work with lots of folks in the months and years ahead of applying and we can tell you exactly what you need to do to further enhance your candidacy before applying in R2. The early planning clients do the best. Take a look at our early planning services here to learn more.

Happy to discuss how we could potentially work together: scott@personalmbacoach.com.

Regards,

Hi all,

I am looking for the Jan 2022 intake and it would be great to have some input!

BACKGROUND
29 years old, Scandinavian, Male

GMAT SCORE
Not taken yet. Have not taken a standardized test for 10 years, so the studying is ongoing. Aiming at 660-680, but it would be great to hear where I should aim at before sending the application. I know I am strong at math but a lot of the parts of the GMAT I haven't used since High School..

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
Graduate diploma in business administration (taken part-time over 4 years while working full time).

WORK EXPERIENCE -
Total: 10+ YEARS, 6+ years of management experience

- Auditor at one of the big four - 3 years
- Controller at a multinational company - 1 year
- Finance Manager in UK, Africa and South East Asia (lived all three places while having these positions) with employee responsibility at a multinational company (same company where I was a Controller) - 2.5 years
- Finance Manager for a multi national company for Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Baltics with employee responsibility - 1 year
- Current position: CFO for Denmark, Norway and Sweden for a major multi-national company. Employee Responsibility (3 direct reports, total 5 FTE in team), part of management group, reporting to MD and CFO Europe, part of strategic discussions etc. - 3 years (as of Jan 2022).

OTHER ACTIVITIES
- Have been involved in politics in High School (vice president for a national student organization)
- Took one exchange year in Japan in High School (at 16 before starting actual High School back home).
- Completed an Ironman Triathlon and multiple half Ironman Triathlons.

POST MBA GOALS
Strategy and general management.

AREAS OF CONCERN
I am slightly worried about my academic results where I have not much to show (my GPA is fairly low as I was working 100 hours a week while taking my Diploma).

Hi jef91,

To begin your evaluation, you have mentioned that your GPA is a bit on the lower end which you need not worry about since for an MBA program the work experience is what is basically paid more emphasis on. Coming to your GMAT score, you should most definitely aim for at least a 690+ as it will allow you to target most of the top-ranking B-schools.

Coming to your work experience, you have an extensive period of work experience which places you in a favorable position. Moreover, you have held managerial positions for more than 6 years which again is an advantage you can exploit to the fullest. In addition, you have also worked in one of the big four firms acts as an acute differentiator in your profile, since most B-schools are notorious for selecting applicants who hail from the big four companies. Lastly, I would like to address your international work experiences which showcase your broadened perspective and your adaptability skills, something which the schools are most certainly on the lookout for.

When it comes to your extracurricular activities, you need to highlight your endeavors outside the classroom to showcase a holistic view of your profile, which is very much valued by the B-schools. In your case, you have mentioned very limited information regarding your extracurricular activities and most of them date back to your high school days. It is imperative that the application should include the extracurricular activities from the undergraduate years and above. Having said that, you can compensate for the same by drawing attention to your participation in any CSR activities or any recent certifications that you’ve undertaken. This will basically showcase your constant learning curve and your upward mobility to take initiatives and create impact.

Speaking of the schools that you can target, you can stick to European-based schools such as HEC, INSEAD in the dream category (where your chances of acceptance is 40-50%) as European schools are most flexible with low academic grades.

While in the competitive category (where your chances of acceptance are 50-60%), you can look at schools such as WHU, RSM, ESMT, IE, EDHEC, and IMD.

To boost your chances of acceptance you can draw attention to the stronger aspects of your profile which can be achieved through your application. Your application is basically what can differentiate you by highlighting your strengths and overshadowing your weaknesses which in your case is your rather low GPA and lack of extracurricular activities. You also need to showcase your journey and how you are a great value addition to the school. Additionally, it also carries a 30% impact on your admission prospects which is why I would urge you to pay more attention to the same.

That said, if you are contemplating on how to draft an impactful application, you can check out our All-in-one service which is a complete end-to-end consulting process aimed at providing personalized application suggestions, unlimited edits, and expert consultants who would constantly be there to help you throughout your application journey! We have helped 3500+ applicants get into the top B-schools with a 95% success rate. So what are you waiting for? Just click on the link below and start your admission journey with us!

I like to start by thinking of the INSEAD 4 criteria: academics, leadership, contribution and international orientation. I would not panic about the low grades however for that reason, I would try to make the test score a slam dunk. And to be honest I think you should hire a tutor and really accelerate your plans so that you can apply to Round 2 for January batch. This way you can apply for scholarships.

Make sure to leave yourself at minimum 2 months to work just on the applications. This is an immense application that requires a lot of reflection. Also lots of recommendation questions; its best to come up with anecdotes that best showcase your brand, even if your recommenders will be doing the heavy lifting.

Get a tutor, maybe even explore the GRE (there is a free mock on mgmat site) but get the test score sorted right away and competitive meaning, 700s, close to the class average. The course at INSEAD is very very accelerated and for that reason, there is very little room for error and they want to be very sure you can handle the rigor. I think MBAMath.com is a good idea whenever there was a previous grade challenge and the GMAT is not competitive with the class average.

As for leadership, it does look like you have that in spades; you would want to start thinking about anecdotes that demonstrate real leadership beyond management of people so they see you has having that "it factor" which portends your success beyond b school.

My concern about your profile is contribution: there are a few activities from undergrad but I dont see any ECs here and those are often a great way to both show a spirit of generosity but also differentiate you in the minds of the readers. INSEAD has a policy of having 2 alumni interview you so they want people who like to contribute outside of work. Do some thinking about this; often its possible to use internal asset building activities at work as a means to show this.

As for international experience - you are all set. Just make sure to show how you have gained from these international work experiences and be able to tie it all back to an international post MBA goal.

Hi mittalbwoy,

You have got a great profile. Starting from acads, your GMAT is great for INSEAD and your undergrad GPA and institution add a good boost to your academic profile. If you manage to score a 750 GMAT in another attempt, you have a good chance at M7 as well.

Your work-experience seems amazing on the surface with a fast career trajectory, many awards and most importantly, a strong impact. Your cross-functional experience can highlight the skills you may have developed that are relevant for your career in PM or consulting. Try to eloquently bring your leadership experiences in essays that have contributed to your personal and professional growth as well as your team and the organization. Overall, your professional experience, if highlighted well, can not only bring skills and expertise, but also global awareness and a strong, vibrating personality.

Your community contribution is quite strong and worth mentioning. Business Schools want to see your ability to contribute to society and highlighting them can help you showcase a collaborative, mature leader in you. Also, your entrepreneurial experience in college can help you add an interesting flavour to your apps. And your ECs are the cherry on the cake!

Overall, a strong profile you have got there! INSEAD seems a good fit for your profile (including your personality and interests). To suggest more schools, I need to know the intake you're eyeing. LBS in Europe and Columbia, Kellogg in the US can be good choices for you.

If you'd like we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and give you more realistic suggestions of schools. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Rudramishra1 congratulations to you! great test score, awesome job. With that test score you might even submit for LBS in Round 4 if you have the time and inclination. I think your work background is unique for your profile. Done properly your recommendations will show leadership, and the essays should show contribution, strengths, well roundedness. Make sure to show a general interest in diversity and internationalism more than a check the box thing. academics: check; leadership: check; international orientation: most likely a check (make sure to show a need for intl program to achieve goal) contribution; unknown. You do have hobbies so that is a plus. It's not awesome submitting in such a competitive climate as an Indian but I do think you will make it. Go for it, make sure to submit Round 2, get going on the application right away, you will need the time to do it properly.
