Hi Team,

Thanks for the detailed analysis.

Although this is not the right forum, other than ISB, with consulting as a long term goal in mind, which other top international schools can I apply for ?

Sure, would be happy to help. However, this thread is for ISB. Please post your preferences (region, ranking, other preference points) to the following thread:

https://gmatclub.com/forum/ask-gyanone- ... 0-140.html

You don't need to post your entire profile again.

Thanks!

Hello everyone,
Just wanted to get my profile evaluated for this year's PGP program of ISB.

Academics
10th:- 89 % state board (West Bengal)
12th:- 76 % state board (West Bengal)
UG:- 7.69 CGPA from Birla Institute of Technology 2016 passout
Work-experience
2 years MakeMyTrip Software Engineer
2 years Paytm Senior Software Engineer
2 months (still continuing) Amazon.com Senior Software Engineer
GMAT 710

CFA level 1 cleared
CFA level 2 will be appearing this December

Post-MBA goal:-
A product manager at global internet companies like Google, Amazon, etc.
Few questions:-
1) Is my GMAT score good enough or should I aim for a higher score? Also does GMAT score matter for any company that visits the ISB campus?
2) Is it a good idea to showcase CFA credentials in the application?
3) Which round should I target and what are my chances with current scores?
4) Considering I'll be having 5 years of work experience by the time I join ISB, will it negatively impact me for any company visiting ISB?

Hi sidshocker

Thanks for posting. Happy to evaluate. Here is our assessment:
- Your academics and work experience look quite good. Which campus of BITS are you from?
- Please provide some details about ECA and leadership. This is very important for ISB this year.
- Your overall work and GMAT score should be fine, and enough to get you, provided you build a compelling application.
- GMAT scores do matter for consulting firms and investment banks, but your goals are not aligned to those areas.
- The CFA does not have an obvious fit with your work, or even your future goals. Still, you should mention it. Remember, though, that simply clearing CFA L1 will have limited credit. Once you clear L2, you are on better ground.
- You should certainly target R1. No doubt about that.
- 5 years of experience is not a negative for any company. Given your goals (product management) you are well placed with 5 years of relevant experience.

Hope this helps. Feel free to get in touch with us directly for any questions on the email given below.

Thanks so much for the evaluation.
I'm from Mesra campus.
Sorry could not get what ECA means. For leadership I would say I had the opportunity to lead the team of 3 freshers for one of the project in Paytm. All our projects were generally done consulting senior PM and Paytm Travel head. I did play a role of scrum master in paytm for our scrums meetings. Also, though its just been 2 months since I join Amazon I've been assigned as on-boarding buddy for new folks which join our team.

Few follow up questions :-
Can I know which consulting firm has gmat criteria . Though not aligned to my goal directly I would definitely not miss the chance to get interviewed for companies like McKinsey ,Bain ,and, BCG.

Any advantage for applying in R1 instead of R2/R3. If gmat score is sufficient then I can apply to R1 otherwise I was thinking of applying R3.

Thanks once again for the evaluation.

Hi @SilvesterJoshu (Silvester),

Thanks for posting. Always great to hear from a Chartered Accountant. Here is our assessment:
- Your academics are quite decent. The M Com helps. The CA is certainly a big plus.
- Your work experience seems similar to what you would do post-MBA. When you say 'strategy', what aspects are you looking at that you are not currently involved in? Why is your CA not enough to achieve this role? What more can an MBA help on? Need to dig a bit deeper to answer/express these.
- The long term goal will also need to be thought of and expressed accurately. This will come from more clarity on the short-term one.
- Your extra-curriculars are ok, but need more details there. #1 there is very common, #2 is ok, #3 and 4 are WIP, and 5 will need more details (what do you exactly do there, and what your past accomplishments have been).

Hope this helps. Feel free to contact us directly (referencing this thread) on email as required.

Hi sidshocker

- ECA stands for Extra Curricular Activities. For the leadership instances, try and go with something that shows impact, and if possible stay away from stories that show you as less experienced (leading freshers) or too technology focused.
- The MBB firms all look at GMAT as an important criterion. A higher score certainly helps when applying to those, though of course other factors like relevant experience or functional suitability are important too.
- Your GMAT is fine. You should target R1, as all seats are available, and chances of scholarship are higher as well. Do not go to R3 at all, when you can apply in R1/2.

Hi UltraHighVoltage

Thanks for posting. Here is our evaluation:
- Acads are fairly decent. Tier 2 institute is not a worry at all. If you are able to achieve you target GMAT (680+ should be ok as well) you will be fine.
- Your work with Collins and GE Healthcare is fantastic. If done well, and the details are managed properly in your application, and you achieve your target GMAT score, these aspects by themselves may be enough to help you create a winning application. The awards only add to this.
- The ECA part is quite good again. Some unique experiences there, like the poll management part, and the university joint secretary role. The research papers are nice too, but they are part of your academic profile, and may not carry too much of impact in the application.
- The goals part will need to be looked at more finely. The kind of product design/management you have more experience with is not the kind that ISB has a strong suit in. It may still work out as a career goal, but the fine parts will be important.

Hope this helps. Feel free to email us directly in case of queries. You can also submit a query on our site, and now book a free profile evaluation session by selecting a convenient time yourself.

Hi EricCartman95

Good to see another NSITian. Have worked with several of them, and always found them quite sharp. So are clearly you. The key in your profile here is that you are anyway on the path to be PM, so why apply to ISB? Getting the goals right is your critical task here.

On your questions:
1. This is too little information to be able to decide that. That would require a discussion of a few hours to understand the motivations and bring out the right points. As you can understand, while your work at MUNs, hackathons, Amazon etc are all good, plenty of applicants have the same kind of activities. So, more thought and brainstorming needed to bring out the points.
2. Yes
3. Round 1 for sure. The score is absolutely fine.
4. Again, no quick answer here, and this is too little information on which to arrive at it. Our advice is that you will need to think this through, introspect, and then arrive at a goal. Remember, ISB does a lot of grilling on the goals in the interviews, so putting in something that just works for now, or seems like a standard long-term goal for a PM is not in your best interests.

Hope this helps. Feel free to come back with more queries as needed.

Hi GyanOne

I would appreciate it if you could give your opinion on my profile too! I'm applying for the EEO at ISB for Round 1.

GMAT- 680 (taking it again in two weeks though)

Undergraduate- English Honours, Lady Shri Ram College for Women (CGPA- 7.216)
12th- ISC 96%
10th- ICSE 90%

Acad- Published 2 research papers examining the implications of gender stereotypes on violence during the 1947 Partition and analyzing audience behaviour towards anti-climactic characters respectively.

Work Experience- 13 months of work experience with an early-stage e-commerce startup. My role spanned multiple domains broadly from content to digital marketing. Because it was an early-stage startup I was able to take charge of many aspects on my own, initiated on-ground marketing activities and led the team in all of them. I also led a digital campaign during COVID-19 to help Indian handicraft artisans associated with our brand leading to tangible contributions.

Multiple internship experiences with Macmillan Education, Partition Museum Archive and Tripoto.

Extracurriculars- Head Girl in school (leadership examples from this demonstrated in the essay)
- Debate Team Head
- School Magazine Editor
- Rotaract Club President
- Infrastructure Team Member in College
- Led a social initiative in college which promoted entrepreneurship among 50 rural women
- Chief Editor at English Academic Journal

Career Goals- Work in an innovative early-stage startup leading their creative marketing strategy and understanding brand-building on a fundamental level. Long vision is slightly unclear but includes heading marketing strategy for leading brands across the country. (confused if EEO applicants can honestly admit the lack of a solidified vision)

Hi tanishkagoel11

Thanks for posting and welcome to the GyanOne thread. Here is our assessment:
- You do have diversity in your profile, and your work with the startup seems interesting. Lots of ECA there, so that helps, especially as ISB's first essay this year is on leadership, so (some of) these stories would help there.
- In terms of the GMAT, the EEO pool is quite competitive. Retaking is a good idea. Try and cross the 700 mark.
- Your career goals need to be solid, whether you are an EEO applicant or otherwise. Would need more details on your work with the early-stage startup. The thing to keep in mind here is that early-stage startups are still gaining traction, so highlighting your work and impact here becomes more important.
- You might need to work a bit more on your future goals. They seem quite similar to what you are currently doing. The long-term aspect needs to be looked at in this light as well.
- Overall, review your goals and career direction at this point. Expressing that in the right way is key to your application right now. Apply in R1, and then try and get a revised GMAT done before Oct 31, hopefully with a 700+ score.

Hope this helps. Feel free to come back with more queries as needed.

Hi GyanOne!

Thanks for your review. I will try my best to cross the 700 mark in my GMAT. Apart from that, my work with the startup largely included content creation and digital marketing. It was a socially-conscious startup, I have experience with running campaigns for them that were socially-oriented. I have prior experience too in a similar sector too with college initiatives and internships. I built on the same in my essay when talking about my career goals. I mentioned that my short term goal is to gain more exposure to marketing strategy and help small businesses grow by using these strategies for them, helping them refocus their market strategy to a cause-orinted approach as opposed to an only product-oriented approach. My long term vision includes leading the transformation of the branding of similar businesses, helping them focus on large-scale campaigns that help with brand visibility and interweave social impact with the brand’s core values and business goals.

Does this convey more clarity? I have prior experience to back up my future goals. My passion to work with socially-responsible businesses is a message that carries through my entire application.

Hi tanishkagoel11

Yes, that does help. Hopefully will have a 700+ to back up your application with to further strengthen your candidature. Good luck! Feel free to ask more questions on this thread should that be needed.
