Hi everyone,

I have been looking at pursuing the management path for some time, but I have just started getting serious about it. I did schedule my GMAT (online) in November 2021 but had to reschedule due to technical issues during the exam. I'll be taking the GMAT again soon. Posting my profile as on date to get a feel of things.

GMAT - Not taken yet (710 in last official mock). I would like to know the least score that I should aim for ( )
Age - 23 (24 in March 2022)
Gender - Male

Work Experience:
32 Months in project management in the Oil and Gas Sector, associated with 3 major offshore oil & gas projects on the East coast of India. I have not worked outside India, but my work demands me to interact and work with team members from various nations. I will be able to secure a recommendation from a highly experienced project management professional.

I do work offshore (on offshore installation vessels) during project execution with multiple stakeholders from various nationalities. Handling stressful high stake situations is my forte.
Currently looking after subsea umbilical installation. Other areas of technical experience - Pre-commissioning of subsea assets.
I have exposure (limited) to FPSO pre-commissioning as well.

Educational Qualifications:
Graduation - Applied Petroleum Engineering from UPES Dehradun. CGPA = 8.23/10.00
12th - 95%
10th - 90%

Extracurriculars:
Actively participated and won in numerous presentations during graduation.
An active member of the student placement committee.

Hello GyanaDash,

Thanks for writing in.

While no GMAT score can guarantee an interview call or admit, you must definitely look at a score upwards of 710 to have a competitive chance. Needless to say, the higher the better. We would have liked to see more details pertaining to your achievements at work as well as your career goals for us to provide you with a detailed profile evaluation.

All the best!

Hello RohanLakhani1,

Hope this finds you well.

Considering you have only 10 months of experience, it is great to see the number of talking points you have with regard to your professional experience.

While 710 is a decent score, you must aim for as high a score as you can. Needless to say, a lot will also depend on how well you portray your achievements as well as your career goals through the essays.

Hello there, thanks for sharing your profile. I am an ISB alum, CO14 and have been guiding ISB applicants since the past five years.

Here is my evaluation of your profile.

ACADEMICS: Good

WORK EXPERIENCE: Above average

EXTRA CURRICULAR: good

While your academics read well and you do seem to have considerable work experience, you need to elaborate to the adcom any leadership experience you have. eg. the project of installing traffic signals around Chennai. Do elaborate on your people skills as well as your leadership skills.
When it comes to extra curriculars, being a state level silver medal in karate will definitely earn you brownie points. However, the rest of the extra curricular activities seem pretty dated. And as you mentioned you spent almost all of your time working, I am assuming you do not have extra curricular experience in the workplace too. The adcom wants to see candidates who have a multi faceted personality. So make sure to talk about the 'other side of you'.

Ideally, you should be aiming for a GMAT score above 700 to have a fair chance at ISB. Alongside, you need a stellar application, essays and resume to make the cut.

Good luck and best wishes!

Hi GyanaDash , suggest you to target upwards of 730 on your GMAT. 710 in official mock is a positive sign. Your work experience of offshore oil & gas projects, handling stressful situations is very interesting. You should tactfully carve out a narrative that justifies your decision to transition away from the current career path in offshore execution towards managerial roles at 24 years of age(which is slightly on the lower end of the age spectrum at ISB). In a pool over represented by IT professionals, techies and start up enthusiasts, profiles with strong engineering and unconventional background such as yours can make a great impression. Be mindful of your post MBA goals. Goals that align with pre MBA career trajectory, demonstrate eagerness to grow professionally and show true passion towards your chosen industry work best. For example I would consider you a stronger applicant if you tell me that post MBA you want to work in corporate leadership programs at global engineering companies, rather than saying that you wish to be a tech product manager at a start up.

If you are looking for professional guidance on ISB application do reach out.

Best wishes

RohanLakhani1 , Hello from a fellow Manipal alum ! You seem to be on track for ISB professional experience wise, however, you should have a strong justification for applying to ISB this early on in your career. I do not see a clear career progression across the projects you mentioned for KPMG over a span of 10 months. If there is room for you to grow in your career without an MBA at this point, then ISB may not consider your application with the desired deliberation.
Be conscientious about your post MBA goals. Evaluate whether your post MBA goals are attainable given your academic pedigree and experience. I suggest you take up opportunities in the coming year that help you gain leadership or team management experience. Involvement in some diversity initiatives or community work will also give strength to your application. Most importantly for your ISB application, communicate the impact generated by you in your projects and value created for your team members and clients.

If you are looking for some professional guidance on the application strategy do reach out.

Best wishes

Hi Beingvoid13 , applicants who have experience of working in family business can bring a very unique perspective in that they have experienced first hand, the implications of decision making with specific goals in mind. As the new generation in family business, you could strongly argue your case with examples, citing your fresh and unconventional approach to doing business (as opposed to traditional norms followed by your senior family members) as your motivation for pursuing MBA. The experience of working in family business brings immense learning and challenges that if showcased aptly in your application, would make you a strong contender for a place in the next academic cohort at ISB.

You could also refer to my write up on how to think about ECs when you don't have many :

Hi eden123hazard , speaking from my experience of delivering a 100% interview rate for ISB applications in last 3 years, I feel you should you make your SBI stint the highlight of your application. Firstly, talk about your decision and motivation to move from private to public sector. Weave a narrative that brings forth some interesting insights from working in the backlands of India. Effective financial inclusion, MSME Financing, agri financing and digital literacy for rural masses are highly relevant topics in the current scenario to unleash the untapped potential at the bottom of the pyramid of Indian economy. Demonstrate compassionate leadership through stories and iron will to mobilize these sectors post MBA leveraging your network and increased business acumen. Be conscientious about your goals and show that you have networked with folks from your target industry and ISB alums and researched your goals well. Goals that align with your current experience would work best in my opinion. You can strongly leverage your experience in areas such as impact investing with banks such as NABARD, and public sector advisory at Big 4 but do your research thoroughly.

Target a 720+ on GMAT

Hello Beingvoid13,

Hope this finds you well.

We do not see working in a small-scale industry as a negative so long as you are able to showcase your learnings and achievements, alongside what you wish to achieve in the future.

At this point, you must focus on the GMAT; try and achieve a score upwards of 720; needless to say, the higher the better. Once the GMAT is out of the way you must put in place a set of well-drafted essays that aptly focus on your strengths and showcase a set of goals that sync well with your experience. Of course, we are assuming that you will be following the entrepreneurial route.

Hope this helps.

Good luck!
