Hello ShreyG,

Hope this finds you well.

A score higher than the average always helps especially if you belong to an over-represented pool of applicants. Hence, you must target a score upwards of 720 on the GMAT.

1) High GMAT/ GRE scores can compensate your CGPAs to a level, if you are able to present a strong story.
2) From my experience with hundreds of candidates like you have more on your Extracurriculars, but again, need much to come out, esp something showing evidence of team and leadership.
3) Goals will have to undergo a radical shift, will need building from scratch.

I believe you have strengths in your profile that have not come out well. Don't know all about you, but from the public info from your profile, I am very confident it can be strong enough for some top schools if the other factors in your profile are good. As a consultant, I have scored 97%+ success with Indian candidates (typically the most competitive pool).

Extra-Curricular:

Post MBA industry: Want to get back into consulting, specifically T1/MBB (interested in strategy consulting primarily)

While 7 years of your WE concerns me a bit, some of your career trajectory can justify it. From my work with 100s of Indian applicants, I also believe you have strengths in your profile that may not have come out well, esp of Leadership and team in your ECAs. From the info from your question however, I am very confident you can be strong enough ISB, as well as for some top European schools. As a consultant, I have scored 97%+ success with Indian candidates (typically the most competitive pool). Let me know if you feel the need to refine your career goals, stories and your application.

Hi KKJ hope this finds you well

You have a good academic background and impressive work experience. Focus on getting the best GMAT score possible and execute your application well. Your ECs are dated and mostly from college days. Focus on the impact you created at the NGO and reflect on the takeaway if it in some way inspires you to take up bigger challenges in the long term. Your long-term goals are somewhat unclear and do not show you have reflected on them well enough. What is the motivation behind "setting up your own consultancy" and how does it connect with anything you have done so far or are planning to do in the future? What is the problem you would be solving with this long-term plan when you have the network, the influence, and an opportunity to make an impact in the organizations/ community?

A better approach would be to think about what you would like to do in the long term, say 10-15 years from now, and why. Then break down your journey toward your long-term goals into possible alternative career paths (a plan A and a plan B) that would help you to pick the right set of skills on the way. Tying the narrative together reflecting on your prior work experience and interaction you have with ISB grads and recruiters would show as a conscientious move on the essays and in the interviews.

Best wishes

Hi Mansvi,

I believe you have a total of 10 months of experience right now which makes you eligible for the EEO option this application cycle?
Your internships are at enviable companies and I hope you made good use of your time there by learning new skills and working on a few substantial projects. That will hold you in good stead during the application and interview process. As with every other b-school, ISB would want to see your leadership potential and your ability to contribute to teams- stories from these internship experiences as well as your ECAs could give you the material to showcase these skills.

The one thing i would try changing in your profile is your GRE score- if you can retake it once and apply with a better score, that would really help.

Overall, you seem to have done well for yourself, and I am confident that if you continue on this career path, you will have the potential to get into several international MBA programs a few years down the line after gaining more work exp.

All the best and feel free to reach out

Hi Namita, thanks for your detailed response.

I took your advice and started prepping for the GRE again. However, I do not feel confident that I'll be able to fetch a higher score. Will the odds be against me if I apply with this score this year?

Hello KKJ,

You have a lot working with you, including a strong academic background, leadership experience, and involvement in extra-curricular activities.

If you are able to put forth the above information through a set of compelling essays while scoring your target score, you will have a very strong chance of making it to your target school.

Hi Satish,

We believe that you should attempt the GMAT once again to compensate for the low academic record, however given that you already have an MBA could work to your advantage.
Your experience is on the higher end of the spectrum so if explained well in terms of how the current batch can benefit from your experience could work well.
The extra curriculars are a bit dated so might not hold weightage but focus on showing any initiatives you took on at work.

However, ISB evaluates a profile holistically and considers diversity aspects as well so might need some more information to give a better view.

Hello Roxy2981,

Thanks for writing in.

The fact that you have graduated from NIT and IIT is bound to be of immense value. Moreover, your 3 years of an experience in a differentiated field will also help add a fair bit of talking points.

You haven't mentioned your career goals at all. It would be essential to see how you tie these up with your overall profile till date.

Extra-curriculars do not particularly look spectacular unless you have missed mentioning others out.

A score of 720 is what you should target. Of course, this is only one component of the application and the Ad Com will evaluate your profile in a more holistic fashion.

Good luck!

Hi,

NOTE: Yet to attempt my GMAT.

I graduated from RVCE, Bengaluru in B.E.-Electronics and Telecommunication in 2020. Since then, I have been working in Cisco as a Technical Consulting Engineer and recently moved to a new role as a Project Manager.

10th: ICSE: 91.5%
12th: CBSE: 91.4%
BTech: 8.5/10
Work ex(as of Aug,2022)- 24months

Achievement and Co curricular:
-Lead a stretch project in my organization as a Project Manager for managing the developments/growth in Top Global Customer Accounts
- Part of a Focus group along with a group of Northwestern MBA students, working on a program named “Future of CXA”
-Member- RVCE Nanosatellite Team- ANTARIKSH
-Master of Ceremony of various events -Part of the Anchoring team of the college
-Member of the Debating Society in College
-Member of Organising teams of E-SUMMITs

I would want to know if my profile is good enough to go ahead and try and attempt GMAT and apply in Round2/Round3 of ISB or should I wait for a few more years for the same?

You have the beginnings of a great profile. Overall, good academic performance and professional/extracurricular achievements are very helpful.

That being said, we would need to better understand your background and the context of those achievements to truly gauge your chances. On the surface, solid start.

You really need a 720+ on the GMAT. Is that doable? A 700 would still keep you competitive, but given the trends in averages, you really could benefit from a high score.

Lastly, do you have any interesting life stories you can share? Those can be x-factors.

We agree with the previous post. You have the right academic credentials and three years of work experience in the aerospace industry can be a nice differentiator.

That being said, your extracurricular achievements are really bare unless you are totally invested in photography. We need to learn more about this activity and/or possibly others you are involved in at work or at home.

Do you have any interesting life stories that you can share? Those are good x-factors that can sometimes make up for limited extracurricular involvement.

As for the GMAT, you need to at least get a 700. If you want to really put yourself in a strong position, I would suggest at least a 730. After that, additional points on the GMAT are going to help your candidacy marginally at best.
