Hey Sakshi,

When considering colleges, you need to keep in mind that academic performance alone is not enough. Colleges look for well-rounded individuals with developed skills and experiences.

With a 7.5 CGPA, you can target top business schools in India and abroad. But to stand out, highlight your extracurricular activities, achievements, work experience, and their impact. Your work experience at RSA India is important to showcase, highlighting the strategies you implemented and the impact you created. When taking the GMAT in May, aim for a score of 690 or higher for ISB or other good

Keep in mind that the GMAT only accounts for 25% of your profile. Your entire application, including essays, SOPs, LORs, resumes, and interviews, plays a significant role in determining your admission chances.

Finally, work on your extracurricular activities, as you haven't been involved in many clubs or associations apart from Rotaract. Engage in NGO activities to showcase your commitment to social causes and make you a well-rounded and impactful applicant.

If you need more help, we'd be happy to set up a call and give you more pointers on how to improve your profile and which schools you should target.

Hi,

Please evaluate my profile for ISB application 2023.

GMAT: 680

10th: 80%
12: 76%
BMS (Mumbai university): 77%
CFA level 1 cleared

Work ex: 36 months

1) Joined a boutique IB in Mumbai as a management trainee (Debt syndication) right after undergrad and left the firm as an Assistant Manager handling pharma and fintech sectors.

2) Joined Deloitte as a senior exec in the private equity origination team (currently working here).

Extra Circular:

1) Diploma in event management from NIEM institute

2) Internship at Optimystix media house in the talent acquisition department particularly catering the "Rising Star" season 2 (a reality singing show)

3) Started a company "Trio events" along with a partner during college days and organised a total of 8 weddings and 4 birthday parties. (Left the company later on to pursue a career in finance."

Hey keyurmehta07,

Your GMAT score of 680 is a decent one, and I'm thrilled to hear that you're considering ISB as your next educational destination.

I went through your profile and must say that your academic background is impressive, with a percentage of 77 from Mumbai University. Additionally, clearing the CFA level one is a remarkable achievement that will definitely set you apart from other applicants.

Your work experience of 36 months is also quite impressive. I believe that quantifying your experience and showcasing your growth within the organisation will create a good impact on your profile. It's great to hear that you joined as a management trainee and writer for the undergrad, and now you're working as an assistant manager with the same organisation. I suggest highlighting your progression within the organisation and the experience you gained in handling a team.

See, a holistically developed profile is essential when applying to top business schools like ISB. Therefore, highlighting your extracurricular activities, and the impact you created through them, will add more value to your profile. Specifically, mentioning the different strategies you implemented to streamline the organisation's work and create a positive impact will be helpful.

Lastly, you're currently working with Deloitte as a senior executive. It's an excellent addition to your profile, and I'm sure it will make a positive impact when you apply to ISB.

Overall, I believe that with your background, work experience, extracurricular activities, and achievements, you have a great chance of getting into ISB.

Hi keyurmehta07 hope this finds you well

I see a lot of potential for differentiation in your profile. As an mgt trainee in boutique IB you would have gained deep insights into the markets and sector-specific knowledge while at the same time developing impressive communication and stakeholder management skills. Depending on your goals you may leverage your prior exposure to the pharmaceutical and fintech industries, including the regulatory environment, key players, and emerging trends.
Hoping you would also have honed your financial modeling skills, to support various investment decisions and assess potential risks, you could try to strategically compensate for your less-than-impressive GMAT score of 680. However, if you can further increase your GMAT to a 700+ level, you will further increase your chance of getting into ISB.

Your ECs are decent enough for ISB. I am sure with some reflection you would have other initiatives you may have been a part of.

You did not specify your goals. To differentiate yourself, you should consider creating ambitious yet inspiring goals that align with your long-term vision and make your short-term trajectory feasible. Conduct thorough research on the industry and how ISB can act as a catalyst for your growth.

Feel free to reach out. Best wishes

Strong undergrad brand, proof of analytical capabilities and a differentiated background. However, you did not mention anything regarding your growth progression in your career over the years. That is the most important aspect business schools will evaluate you on. Hope you can reflect profoundly over it. To make it difficult for ISB to reject you, you must offer a strong standing in all aspects, stressing your leadership experience, professional growth, incremental responsibilities with every project, strong community engagement experience, and extensive research on goals.

Feel free to reach out should you need guidance.

Hey Swapnilgodawat,

Based on your academic and professional credentials, it is evident that you have a strong foundation to pursue an MBA from a top business school. Your GPA of 8.1 from Mumbai University and a GRE score of 324 are impressive indicators of your academic prowess, and the fact that you have completed 1/4th of your application shows your dedication and commitment towards your goals.

However, it is important to note that the application process is multifaceted, and success is contingent on a holistic perspective. Your work experience as a full-stack software developer at L&T, HTC, and currently in CitiusTech is impressive, but you need to articulate your roles and responsibilities, especially those that showcase your leadership and impact on the organization. Quantifying your achievements and describing the strategies you used to streamline processes and improve efficiency will make your profile more appealing to admissions committees.

Furthermore, top business schools look for well-rounded candidates, and it is important to highlight your extracurricular activities, achievements, and impact on society. Your experience as a Marketing Head in the E-cell Committee, Computer Secretary, and working in a marketing committee in college should be emphasized. Be sure to showcase the events you organized, the number of students you led, and the activities that impacted people's lives.

Your volunteering activity with the NGO - Robin Hood Army - is another area where you can highlight the outcomes and social causes you worked on. It demonstrates your commitment to social responsibility and community engagement, traits that are highly valued by business schools.

Finally, it is important to keep in mind that deferred MBA programs are meant for students who are in their last year of undergrad. As you have completed your undergraduate studies and have four years of work experience, a full-time MBA program is more appropriate for you. You can target a mix of dream and competitive schools and expect a good return on investment after graduation.

If you need more help, we'd be happy to set up a call and give more pointers on how to improve your profile and the right schools you should target.

Hi! It would be great if you could evaluate my profile and suggest a good GMAT score based on it for a possible scholarship.

I am:
F, 28, applying for class of 2025
Not taken GMAT yet. Target > 700, reach 720

Work Experience:

1.5 years at a Chinese E-com giant’s subsidiary in a SA country. Started out as a Digital Marketing Associate and was soon handling category marketing for 2 categories which was 70-80% revenue for the company. I was promoted twice in that short period of time.I also helped the company transition through a buy-out from the marketing POV.

2 years ( by the time I apply) at one of the better Oppo brands - first as a Management Trainee in the online sales dept. and then in the branding team as a Senior Specialist. I have helmed big budget campaigns and won many awards externally and internally.

Education

Highschool with 73% taking biology and physics
Studied Business ( 7.0 GPA) on Ministry of External Affairs, India full scholarship for Undergraduate Program at a 2nd tier state university
Studied MBA (8.5 GPA) on Ministry of External Affairs, India full scholarship for Postgraduate Program at a 2nd tier state university

Extra-curricular

Started a club in highschool focused on social causes and engagement of students in social awareness for issues like safety and growth of children of prison inmates, environment, etc. Interviewed activists and published articles in the school magazine.

Organised football tournaments during college as a foreign student. I studied and lived with students from close to 55 countries at the time. I was also actively involved in integration of new admissions into the student life in the city.

I wrote and published papers in national journals during my MBA. I also helped faculties write business case studies.
I won a case study championship to land my first post-MBA job.

All scholarships I won were on a national level. Despite the pedigree not being refined, I competed on a national level to land those. Since they were government given scholarships, students are sent to state universities.

I have always been an avid reader and started a book club in my first job. Anywhere from managers to associates participated in it.

I will soon be joining my MBA college's alumni mentorship program.

Why a second MBA?

I want to transition from marketing great products to building those products. Product strategy is an area that I am increasingly interested in and an MBA that focuses on strategy will add immense value in terms of theoretical knowledge, exposure and network.

I am also aware of the value my existing MBA has in the market and I want to go beyond that to reflect what I am capable of. I feel restricted in my current roles. A global MBA with a scope of great networking should open doors for me that were not even visible some time ago.

I am not of Indian origin and hold a non-Indian, small country citizenship.

Hi,
A good GMAT score would be 700 plus, as high as possible (merit based scholarships are awarded to applicants with great acads and high GMAT scores). Your reason for the second MBA seems fine, you need to ensure that you tell a strong story through your essays and application.

Usually pursuing a second MBA a few years after your first MBA is reasonable, however, it is not clear from the information here when you graduated from the previous one. You could check the specifics in accordance with your career plans.

All the best!

Hey suyathis1,

Based on the information provided, it appears that you have yet to take the GMAT, but are aiming for a score between 700 and 720. If your preparation goes well and you are able to score above 690, this will greatly increase your chances of being admitted to top-tier schools. Your work experience of one and a half years at a Chinese e-commerce subsidiary in a South Asian country and your involvement in a digital marketing association are factors that will be taken into consideration post-graduation.

Your academic background is impressive, with a full scholarship for your undergraduate program and an MBA from the Ministry of External Affairs with a CGPA of 8.5. When targeting schools abroad, academics, work experience, extracurricular activities, and curricular achievements are all important factors that should be emphasized. Your extracurricular activities, such as starting a club in high school focused on social causes and issues related to children's safety, should be highlighted, along with any programs you organized that made an impact on children's lives.

In regards to pursuing a second MBA, you should consider emphasizing your desire for international exposure, further specialization in your chosen career field, and opportunities to transition from marketing to product design. Pursuing an MBA will provide you with the necessary exposure and specialization to help increase your career opportunities in this field. Your Indian origin and non-Indian small country citizenship can also be an added advantage to your profile.

It is important to focus on your essays and statement of purpose, as these will be key factors in the admissions process. Be sure to present a well-rounded profile that showcases your achievements and goals in a professional manner.

If you need more help, we'd be happy to set up a call and give more pointers on how to improve your profile and the right schools you should target.

Hi all,

I have done my B. Tech. in IT in 2012, followed by one year of experience in software testing. As of now I have been working in Indian customs (government sector) since last 6 years.
10th: 69.4%

B.Tech. 74.5%

I am planning to take GMAT in couple of months. Please let me know whether my profile suits for ISB; I mean, is it okay to have WE in government sector ?

Hi,

It is absolutely ok if you want to apply to an MBA program (ISB or any other) post your "government sector" work experience. As you have a technology background, you might want to upgrade your skills (if it is not so already) in the sector. It will be important for you to communicate your agility as a professional and your readiness for the career transition you are planning for post MBA through your essays and application.

Your professional background till date is not a deterrent to applying for an MBA. It can actually be a plus as you do add diversity to the classroom.

All the best!

We echo the opinion of the previous poster. MBA classes are comprised of students from all professional backgrounds. The public sector (government), while not the most common industry, it is still relatively well-represented for pretty much every incoming class. When putting together your application - namely the essays and resume/CV - do not underestimate your background or credentials. You are equally as qualified as someone with private sector experience.

Good luck on the GMAT. That is a very important component of your application.

Hi!

It would be great if you could review my profile! Thank you for taking your time!
I am planning to apply only once I hit 2 years of work ex (currently at 6 months). But wanted to get a sense of direction in the meanwhile. I am mainly insecure about my UG college. Not sure if it matters big time. Your input would be very helpful!

Undergrad: BBA in Finance from a T2 college affiliated to Bangalore University
Undergrad CGPA: 8.8/10

10th grade: 9.8 / 10
12th grade: 87%

GMAT: I have given many mocks. My score averages around 710.

Reason for MBA:

I want to move into Investment Banking. I am currently in Financial Planning & Analysis. This is where I found my passion for finance, working with numbers, and analyzing businesses. After having talked to many people already working in investment banking, I came to the conclusion that an MBA would be the best option to jump into the industry. The MBA would also help me in further advancing my career smoothly in the industry.

Work Experience:
Strategy Intern at a boutique consultancy firm [1 year]
Worked with a leading startup in the fashion e-commerce sector in a complete transformation of their organizational structure, creating OKRs for roles, and revamping their Performance Management Systems.

Worked with a famous Liberal Arts and Science University in India in initiating a service excellence strategy for the administration of the university.

Built a completely automated system by collaborating with HR industry experts and psychologists, replacing the previously followed manual process of evaluating the human resource of client companies as a part of revamping their HR strategy.

Worked with a famous Indian MNC involved in Steel Manufacturing in initiating a Women Empowerment program in the company as a part of their DEI strategy.

Associate Analyst in Reporting and Analysis at a Big 4 [6 months]
Worked with internal stakeholders in the US member firm to help cut costs and make critical decisions by producing financial reports based on business need.

Automated my personal scheduled financial reporting, cutting down approximately 16 hours of work (all reports combined per month) down to 5 hours.

Initiated and lead the internal report automation project.

Extra Curriculars
Head Coordinator of the Commerce & Management club in college
Developed case studies and conducted a national business case study competition.

Hi,
Evaluating your profile as below:

1. Academics - range between good to strong
2. GMAT - 710 is the school average so anywhere above that would be a strong score to go with (although 710 is also fine, given that it is one of the things evaluated in the process, not the only one).
3. T2 college - you have mentioned that as concern, I wouldn't see that as one. There's still a lot to your story over and above this.
4. Extracurriculars - Since you have still some time to go before you apply, try to add/ continue with some activities on this front. ( You have mentioned - Currently volunteering a few hours in the morning 5 days a week with a famous NGO in the education sector in teaching math to kids from lower primary classes. - which is good)
5. Work Experience: Associate Analyst in Reporting and Analysis at a Big 4 [6 months] - This work experience has a lot of takeaways professionally, however you need to evaluate if there is any skill upgrade that you need to transition to investment banking. This is a good time to build on those.

Keep up the good work. All the best!

Hi vaiware hope this finds you well

While it appears that you have solid plans to enhance your experience and become a competitive candidate, I feel you are better suited for a two-year MBA program than you are for the ISB PGP. A two-year MBA would provide you with better tools to establish a strong foundation and pursue IB roles. Although you can certainly crack ISB when the time is right, considering your age, experience, and academic background, a two-year MBA program would give you a reasonable amount of time to explore diverse opportunities, spread your wings, and leverage internships to advance your goals in IB. Additionally, it is worth noting that in one-year programs, you will be competing with highly qualified individuals such as CAs and CFAs, who may already have IB exposure and the desired academic background.

If you are flexible with your IB goals, ISB can be a good fit, otherwise, you will have to build a stronger case to justify the plan to transition to IB through ISB PGP to the admissions committee.

Best wishes

Hi all,

I have done my B. Tech. in IT in 2012, followed by one year of experience in software testing. As of now I have been working in Indian customs (government sector) since last 6 years.
10th: 69.4%
12th: 75.8%
B.Tech. 74.5%

I am planning to take GMAT in couple of months. Please let me know whether my profile suits for ISB; I mean, is it okay to have WE in government sector ?

Hi Avneeshyadav01 hope this finds you well

For applicants with relatively more experience, such as you, ISB expects to see a clear professional growth trajectory in their application. As you are transitioning from the government sector, the admissions committee may hold preconceived notions that your professional growth was limited. Therefore, it is crucial that you demonstrate your skills and potential to differentiate yourself from other candidates in this sector.
The government sector is well represented at ISB, but keep in mind that only those who exhibit the utmost clarity in their past trajectory and future goals make the final selection. You did not mention about your goals. That would require a lot of deliberation. Regarding the GMAT, the higher you score, the higher the likelihood of receiving favorable consideration. Please do not hesitate to contact should you need further guidance.

Best wishes

Hi suyathis1

The GMAT target between 700 and 720, if achieved will put you on a strong pedestal. Your rich international work experience, strong extra curricular interests if summarised well through the essays and the application, you surely can expect very positive results.

We encourage you to register for a free one to one holistic profile evaluation by an Ex Admission Officer from ISB who will also guide you on scholarships.

Wishing you all the best.
