Hi,

1. Acads and GMAT score are well placed, will add strength to your application as a whole.
2. Work experience: 9 years work experience across departments does have its merits. It does give you a good perspective on business problems, so look for the stories that add best value.
3. Lack of EC needs to be looked into closely. As a matter of fact, we have had many applicants who have been admitted to top B schools with such a case, there are many experiences you would have which would also portray the same leadership skills as the ones we aim to communicate through EC achievements. It all depends on perspective and how you build your application strategy. Two suggestions here - a) Since you still have time till you will put up an application - go ahead and add something b) Work on your application strategy as a whole to decide whether you really lack the skills or just the specific checkbox in the standard list. There are many cases where admits work on off shore or rural plants and they really don't have ECs. Its ok. There might be something else which can add value.

All the best!

Hello Sriram99

ISB looks at 1. Academic potential, 2. Work ex, 3. Diversity and 4. Career goals.
Your post touches primarily upon 1. Academic Background (which looks pretty strong both based on past scores and GMAT) and 2. Work Experience (apart from years and industry, very little to go about in terms of quality of work experience - such as career progression, achievements etc. However, multiple roles gives some confidence on story telling potential). Other details such as 3. Diversity (automotive industry helps a bit here, but lack of extracurricular could hurt. Irrespective, will need to build a story around any other unique traits or qualities that you can bring in to add value to the experience of your batch mates inside and outside the class room). 4. Career goals seem to be missing completely here and are an extremely important piece of the admissions puzzle. Please work on building a narrative that is clear, realistic and organic.

You may want to read here on what factors work in a profile and here to add to your research on career goals.

Hello aayushlovelife

Some important pointers about your profile which you would already know are your international education and rich international work experience with strong focus in extracurricular activities.

However, your short term goal after MBA is wanting to enter into Infrastructure consulting firms(Major Ones) is not impossible but also not easy. You will have to make a strong case for yourself by talking about relevant work experience and how doing PGP from ISB will help you transition into MBB consulting or some big Infrastructure Companies through the essays, application and the LOR.

Your GRE score seems to be OK considering your education and professional experience but to better your scholarship chances, we recommend that you improve your score from 319 to a GRE score between 324 and 330. As you haven't worked in India in the infrastructure space, developing industry knowledge will also help you during the application/interview process.

Hope this helps.

Hi Everyone,
Can I please request a profile evaluation from some of the experts in this group? My target programs are IIM Ahmedabad (PGPX), ISB (PGP) and IIM Bangalore (EPGP)

Education/Test Scores:

Masters in Civil Engineering (Construction Management) from North Carolina State University,Raleigh,North Carolina USA ; Graduated in 2016(GPA: 3.36/4)
B. Tech Civil Engineering : ITM Gurgaon (MDU Rohtak) ; Graduated in 2013 (GPA: 7.86/10)
12th : 85%
10th: 89%
GRE: Expected (315-320)
Certificate course in Leadership Principles from HBS Online
Member of Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (MRICS),UK: A reputed and highly sought after certification in the field of Quantity Surveying/Cost Management.

Work Experience:

I have more than 8 years of experience in the construction industry in diverse sectors such as Infrastructure, Energy, Real Estate, Education and Life Sciences. My major area of work is Cost Management/Quantity Surveying across all phases of a construction project starting from inception to final close out. I also have experience in Construction Data Analytics and Business Intelligence programs. I have worked for 5 years in USA, 2.5 years in India and for the last six months in United Kingdom. I have worked n in construction markets of New York,San Francisco and London and have experience of working on projects in various other countries (China,Japan,Korea,Australia,Canada,Denmark,Mexico etc). Currently working with an Ireland based MNC cost consultant firm. Previous work experience was with a UK based MNC cost consultant firm

I can clearly show my career progression rising from an entry level individual contributor to a mid management role. I can get good recommendations from peers in the industry. I have been a member of educational and CSR committees at my workplace. I have also received a few good performer awards.

I have also provided mentorship to various students who are looking to study in USA (especially those who from a Civil Engineering background).

Motivation to do an MBA: Looking for a change in functional role and looking forward to work in a strategy/business development role in the Real Estate sector in India.

Post MBA Goals: To work in strategy/BD role for major Real Estate developers in India by developing management skills through MBA. Give back to my country after gaining significant skills and knowledge abroad.

Concerns: Really struggling to prepare for GRE after such a long gap and hectic work schedule. Is a really high score needed for someone with this much work experience?

Thank You for your time & suggestions!

Happy to help. Here is our assessment and our advice:

- Your Master's in Civil Engineering from North Carolina State University and B.Tech in Civil Engineering show a strong background in your field. Your GPA in both programs is decent, but not exceptional. The certificate course from HBS Online and your MRICS membership add value to your profile. However, the expected GRE score of 315-320 might be on the lower end for these programs, especially for ISB. Aim for a score of 322+ to make your application more competitive. This is not a must-have, but it helps tremendously.
- Your 8 years of international experience in construction across diverse sectors and markets is a major strength. Emphasize your experience in different countries and how you adapted to various work environments. Showcasing your career progression from entry-level to a mid-management role will help demonstrate your potential to grow further.
- Being a member of educational and CSR committees at work and mentoring students planning to study in the USA will contribute positively to your profile. Highlight the skills you developed and the impact you made through these activities.
- Your plan to work in a strategy/business development role in the Indian Real Estate sector is clear and achievable. In your application, explain how an MBA from your target programs will help you develop the necessary management skills and how your international experience will contribute to your goals.
- While preparing for the GRE can be challenging with a busy work schedule, a higher score will improve your chances of admission. Consider finding a study plan that works for your schedule and leveraging online resources or test prep services. A higher score, especially for someone with extensive work experience, can make your application stand out in the competitive applicant pool.

Hope this helps. Feel free to get in touch directly for a discussion on call if needed, or to come back with more queries here.

Hi Sriram99 hope this finds you well.

You have had a long tenure with your company but surely you can capitalize on the progressive opportunities in various departments to showcase your growth trajectory. While your undergraduate background and academic performance seem commendable, it's important to delve deeper and uncover other unique aspects of your profile. Now is not the time to play it safe, as there will be many applicants with similar profiles applying to your target school. It's essential to give yourself a head start (now) and develop a compelling narrative.

Regarding your ECs, it's interesting that you referred to an activity from your college days, which was over a decade ago. It may be difficult but it's important to reflect on how you may have contributed at work or outside in the past nine years. Think about your seemingly mundane engagements in recent times, as they can reveal meaningful information about your personality. Any last-minute ECs will not have the same impact.

You did not mention your goals. It's important to be authentic about what you expect from an MBA/PGP. Note that the admissions committee will have a long memory of previous profiles that may have mentioned generic goals related to product or consulting, for example. To stand out, take time to think about where you see yourself in 7-10 years and develop a short- and medium-term plan that makes sense for you. Reflect on the skills you've acquired from your past experiences and identify areas where you'd like to improve. If you're aiming to switch to a different industry after a long stint in automotive, think about the new skills that would be needed for that transition.

Standout candidates are more likely to provide a Plan A and a Plan B, and back them with relevant insights gained from networking with alumni, potential recruiters, and industry experts. This would show that you've done your research and are proactive in planning for your future career success.

Feel free to write to us at [email protected] should you need further guidance.

Based on the information you have provided, you have a strong profile for the MBA programs you have listed. Your academic background seems to have been consistent. Through your Master's degree and certification such as Quantity Surveying/Cost Management can be used to showcase your technical expertise in the industry. Your diverse work experience across different sectors and geographies is a really really strong point in your profile, and not many people applying to IIMs and ISB will have that kind of experience. Additionally, your involvement in educational and CSR highlight your leadership potential and ability to take initiative. All of these can make for a very strong submission. Another huge positive is that your drive to achieve your goals is evident from whatever little you've written here. If we can build on this and demonstrate a strong passion for your goals, you will stand a good chance of admission.

Coming to your concerns about the GRE score, a high GRE score is definitely an advantage but not a must-have for someone with your level of work experience. While it is true that these programs have a minimum GRE score requirement, most schools look at the application holistically, taking into account your work experience, leadership potential, academic achievements, and other relevant factors. However, make sure you score a minimum of 320 to maximize your chances of getting admitted.

Have no doubts about the need for an MBA at this stage. An MBA will help you develop the management and strategic skills required for a business development role or a strategy role. An MBA program would also provide opportunities for networking, learning from experienced industry professionals, and gaining exposure to different business functions and industries. Additionally, an MBA from a top school such as IIM Ahmedabad, ISB or IIM Bangalore could enhance your marketability and career prospects in the highly competitive job market. Firms tend to recruit heavily from top MBA programs, as they see them as a reliable source of highly talented and motivated individuals who have developed a solid foundation in business management and strategy

In summary, target minimum 320 GRE and create a compelling narrative through your essays to improve your chances.

For a more detailed 1-1 strategy session, please write to [email protected] or fill the form at http://www.admitexpert.com

Good luck!

Hi Everyone!

I would like to request my profile evaluation -

32Y/F
Mother of a toddler

Chartered accountant with 8+ (9 by the time I join mba program) years post qualification experience.

CA - 53% (Both groups cleared together; exemption in 2/8 & 5/7 subjects in Final & Inter respectively; articleship from a Big 4)
B. Com. - 71%
12th - 86%
10th - 91%

Experience -
1. Working as a Finance Manager in one of the Big 3s (2+ years in current role) Key responsibilities - Planning/ budgeting & tracking actuals against budget, performing margin analysis (critical KPI as drives partner bonus); Spearheading implementation of a new accounting standard/first time implementation of a new process & multiple other finance functions (consolidation, audit etc.)
Prior to this was an experienced manager in Big 4 and worked on end to end of an audit of all FS captions of diversified industries - Consumer goods, Fashion apparel, industrial goods (spent 6+ years post qualification).

Key professional highlights -
1. Throughout rated a high performer
2. Got An offer for secondment to US office
3. Promoted from Senior to AM within a year of joining (1 out of 13)
4. As a Manager 1 handled one of the biggest engagement of the firm erstwhile handled by an experienced SM
5. Secondment in Transfer pricing & Forensics department
6. Won multiple awards for performance, team management & exceptional client service
7. Have been actively involved on hiring drives, leading the onboarding efforts; imparting accounting & audit trainings (group size ~50) and handled team size/direct reportees ~20

Extracurricular - 1) Won painting competitions in school for multiple years and a prize at district level
2) Emceed multiple school events; participated in debates, quizes, drama etc.
3) Was invited to my school as a 'guest of honour' and a judge.

Motivation - Always wanted to pursue an MBA but couldn't due to personal/family reasons; then ROI seemed too high for taking a break. Now I am at a point where I want to do it before it is too late - for my personal growth; get a real college experience and pivot my career from a core technical accounting role to a role that is general management.

I know my extracurricular is quiet weak. I do have some ideas that I can work on but i'm confused as to what's the key to choosing - is it volunteering for an NGO/social cause but volunteering in my skills as a CA is fine or volunteering in a different role and thus make it really an extracurricular

First of all, you must be extremely proud of yourself for contemplating an MBA while handling a toddler. Caring for a toddler is like a number of full-time jobs put-together :)

Coming to your profile, your academic background and work background are solid. Nothing to worry about there. What you must focus on is to get a good GMAT score (700+) and more importantly, show why you need the MBA now. All admissions committees are going to wonder why someone whose career is going well and who has a toddler to take care of would want to put herself through a rigorous MBA at this point. So you need have clarity on your goals and the need for an MBA.

Regarding your extracurricular activities, it is not necessary to have a broad range of extracurricular activities to be a strong MBA candidate. Admissions committees value quality over quantity, and your work achievements and leadership experiences can more than make up for any potential gaps in your extracurricular activities, if you portray them right. However, it is always good to have a well-rounded profile, so if you have any ideas for extracurricular activities that you are passionate about, you should pursue them in the coming months.

For a more detailed 1-1 strategy session, please write to [email protected] or fill the form at http://www.admitexpert.com

Good luck!

Hi all. Thanks for all your inputs. I will add info about my motivations and ECs soon.

One thing I missed to mention in the previous post: I have been part of two 'one year leadership initiatives' in my company :first, an entry level leadership program and one mid level leadership program

How does it add value to my profile?

B. Com. - 71%
12th - 86%

Hi Saakshi2407

- Your strong academic background, as a Chartered Accountant with good scores in B.Com, 12th, and 10th, sets a solid foundation for your application. With 8+ years of experience in finance and accounting roles, including your current Finance Manager position and previous work at a Big 4 firm, you bring a wealth of expertise to the table. Emphasize your secondment offer, promotions, and awards in your application.
- Your extracurricular activities, such as painting competitions, emceeing, and guest of honor appearances, showcase your diverse interests. To enhance this section, consider volunteering at an NGO or social cause that aligns with your passions. You can leverage your CA skills or explore new roles to demonstrate well-roundedness and commitment.
- Clearly articulate your motivation for pursuing an MBA at ISB, including your desire for personal growth, a college experience, and a pivot to general management. Explain how an MBA from ISB will help you achieve your goals and add value to the program. Have goals that are specific and necessitate an MBA, explaining what you want to achieve and why your current experience and education is not enough. Just mentioning a move ot general management will not be enough.
- Don't worry about your extracurriculars being weak; focus on what you can do now to make an impact. Choose activities that resonate with your interests and showcase your unique skills. These may not be big ticket from where you are right now (a few months before applying), but they will still help. While ECA helps, the core of your profile is still your professional experience, and you are good there.
- Aim for a GMAT score of 680+, and of course, the higher the better. Try and apply this year and don't delay to the next, given the relatively higher work experience already.

Remember, it's never too late to follow your dreams. Pursuing an MBA can unlock new opportunities and provide a platform to accelerate your career. Stay determined, work on building a strong application, and believe in yourself.

Hi Sriram99

- Your strong academic background, including your B.Tech from NIT Trichy and impressive scores throughout your educational journey, and your multi-faceted work experience sets a great foundation for your MBA application. With 9 years of work experience in the automotive industry, your exposure to multiple departments like sourcing, pricing, and strategy demonstrates your versatility. Be sure to emphasize significant achievements, projects, and promotions in your application.
- Your experience as the Head of a Department for a college cultural festival showcases your leadership potential, but this itself is a common ECA and will not get you too much credit. While you may not have many extracurricular achievements, focus on any activities or interests you pursued outside of work to show a well-rounded personality. It's never too late to enhance your extracurricular activities or engage in volunteer work that aligns with your interests. Think in terms of CSR involvement, social volunteering, peer mentoring etc.
- Your competitive GMAT score of 740 will strengthen your application, but remember, your overall profile needs to stand out. Articulate your goals and motivations for pursuing an MBA and explain how the program aligns with your career objectives. Do you want to continue in the automotive sector or move to another one? How will an MBA help and what are the skills you bring? These will be important things to keep in mind.

Keep in mind that there are numerous possibilities to enhance your profile, and engaging with us further can help uncover tailored suggestions that align with your interests and passions. Good luck with your MBA journey!

GMAT score of 740 is an excellent score and is above the average score for most top programs.

You have 9 years of work experience in the automotive industry across multiple departments, which shows a diverse and well-rounded profile - it'll be great to know what ind of team management and leadership experiences you have had along the way, and also your overall career progression from time of joining to date.

You have a strong academic record with a B.Tech from a reputed institute like NIT Trichy with an 8.45 CGPA

You have held a leadership position as the Head of a department for your college cultural festival. Your 12th and 10th grades scores of 93% are also impressive - However, all of these are too far back in your life and cannot be used as major selling points in your application.

While you have mentioned that you do not have any major extracurricular achievements, it is still important to highlight any hobbies or interests that you may have pursued outside of work. This could include sports, volunteering, or any other activities that showcase your leadership, teamwork, or creativity skills. There could be something that you do but may have overlooked assuming that it's not a big thing to talk about. Brainstorm a little more deeply.

Overall, with your strong GMAT score, solid work experience, and impressive academic record, you have a competitive profile for top MBA programs. Make sure to highlight your achievements and strengths in your applications and demonstrate how an MBA will help you achieve your career goals.

To get into ISB, you need to have a competitive GMAT score, typically in the range of 700-760. A higher score can increase your chances of getting admitted, particularly if you want to stand out in a competitive applicant pool.

The Masters degree and work experience in the US are strong points in your profile. From what we see, your career growth seems to have been good as well.

To enhance your profile, you can focus on building leadership skills and gaining experience in managing projects and people. As you are planning to transition into a management role, leadership experience would be a significant plus for your application. You can also consider taking on volunteer roles, such as organizing events or leading a community initiative, to build on your ability to work with diverse groups of people, which you already can showcase through your work experience in the US.

Given your interest in ancient Indian culture, you can also consider participating in related extracurricular activities or volunteering in organizations that promote Indian culture. This could translate into a great story on your application essays. It could also be used as one point in explaining why return to India, which is going to be a main question from adcoms in your case. Therefore, have a strong sense of purpose and clear goals for your MBA and articulate that in your application essays to demonstrate your alignment with ISB's mission and values and more importantly, the need for an Indian MBA at this point.

Hello vamsi2025

You have a pretty balanced profile, past scores are decent, add to that a GMAT of 720+ and you'll be in a strong position.
From a work ex perspective, there seems to be good career progress, make sure you're taking about measurable business impact at work (rather than technical skills).
Looking at software background, diversity could have taken a hit, but your extracurricular and international experience can easily compensate for it.
Career goals seem realistic and organic too, just need to put together a well articulated narrative.
All in all, don't see any major weakness, what is needed is a good GMAT and a decent application which just ties in what you already have.

You may want to read here on what factors work in a profile and here to add to your research on career goals.
