Hi,

1. Try to work on the GRE score, especially a higher verbal score.
2. It will also be important for you to deep dive your work experience as a senior software analyst to identify the strong stories and sync up your career goals. When you have around two/ three years of work experience, the key question to address is why now. Ensure that you have a very strong case for that.

All the best!

Hello Meetsaluja14

Looking at your software background and experience (~2 years), the current GRE score does not inspire a lot of confidence.
I say that because you belong to the largest and the most competitive pool of applicants and will need a strong score and stellar achievements to stand out in the tough competition which on an average has higher scores and might have stronger achievements to talk about (even if it is because of having spent more time in the industry).
At the same time, some of this can be offset by your extracurricular activities that seem to add diversity. Can you elaborate more around any other activities, skills or qualities that make you unique and might help you add value to the experience of your batch mates inside and outside the classroom.
Lastly, career goals seem to be missing here and your future aspirations are as much a part of your profile as your past work experience, score etc. Please work on articulating a strong narrative that is clear, organic and realistic.

You may want to read here on what factors work in a profile and here to add to your research on career goals.

Hello Kanipad

While the work profile and goals seem decent, but the information is incomplete without past scores, GMAT score (at least an expected score) and extracurricular activities (or any unique experiences/skills/qualities that will help to add the the value of your batch mates inside and outside the classroom).
Please share for a better profile evaluation.

You may want to read here on what factors work in a profile and here to add to your research on career goals.

A below average GRE score, coupled with your undergrad college (Tier 3) and lower experience do not make a great combination Meet!

While you cannot do anything about the latter two, you can definitely do a lot about your GRE score.

Good luck!

Hi Meet

Good to hear from you. Here is our assessment:
- Your work experience in a reputable company like Capgemini is valuable, but consider highlighting any significant projects, leadership roles, or impact you've made during your tenure. This will help differentiate you from other applicants with similar work profiles.
- While you mention leadership positions in your volunteering experiences, be sure to provide details on the impact you've made and how these experiences have helped you develop leadership skills that will be valuable in an MBA program. Remember, simply being in a leadership role is not enough. You must be able to show the results you achieved and impact you created. Also keep in mind that publishing the papers/articles will not come under ECA strictly the way ISB sees them.
- Clearly articulate your short-term and long-term post-MBA goals and explain how an MBA from ISB will help you achieve them. This will demonstrate your motivation for pursuing an MBA and how the program aligns with your aspirations. As you can well understand, software engineering is a common background, and you need to be clear on your career vision and why your goals are worth pursuing. Steer clear of simply talking about common goals like product management without deeper context.

Hope this helps. Feel free to come back with further queries as needed.

Hi Kanipad,

Based on the information you provided, it seems like you have a strong academic background with good grades in your Xth and XIIth exams, and a decent CGPA in your B.Tech. Your work experience of 8 years in a leading Public Sector organization as an Engineering Consultant showcases your technical skills in the field. However, to better evaluate your profile and provide tailored advice, it would be helpful to know more about the quality of your work experience (promotions, achievements, initiatives and awards etc.), your extracurricular activities, any certifications or courses you have completed, and the specific role, field or industry you are interested in transitioning to.

Also, it is important to note that while the GMAT is a widely recognized exam for admission into management programs, it is not the only factor that business schools consider. Other factors such as your work experience, extracurricular activities, leadership potential, and application essays also play a critical role in the admissions process.

On the surface, it looks like you have a good foundation to build upon. You need to introspect more and identify the strengths and weaknesses from your personal and professional background and how to use them to make yourself stand out among thousands of other applicants. For a more detailed 1-1 strategy session, please write to [email protected] or fill the form at http://www.admitexpert.com

Good luck!

Meetsaluja14 hope his finds you well

For an MBA aspirant with less experience, your profile doesn't seem to have any glaring weaknesses on the surface, but it also lacks standout aspects. To truly differentiate yourself, a strong GRE score of 330+ would give you the competitive edge you need.

There are ways to bolster your application, such as reflecting on challenges you've faced in your formative years or career and showcasing how you've overcome them. Business schools evaluate candidates objectively and fairly, recognizing that not everyone starts from the same level. If you've overcome unique challenges in your background to reach your current career, be sure to highlight that in your application.

In addition, put in the effort to clearly demonstrate your career progression in your essays, despite your limited experience or (perhaps) lack of promotions. Rather than focusing on job title changes, highlight incremental responsibilities, increased challenges in diverse projects, promising outcomes, and stakeholder management over the past 2 years.

You didn't mention your goals. Let's assume you're interested in product or tech-oriented consulting roles. Question yourself why you need an MBA/PGP with your level of expertise in software development/design. This will help you identify reasons that genuinely inspire you to apply to ISB. Think of goals that are not just aspirational, but also inspirational. How can you utilize your skills to solve future problems?

Application Strategy- Keep in mind that top business schools look beyond academics, GMAT scores, undergraduate pedigree, and employer brand to assess your potential. It would be helpful to showcase a "hook factor" in your profile, especially since you come from an over-represented pool.

You are a relatively young applicant for 1 year MBA; however if you give yourself some more time to enhance your profile you could grab projects and professional opportunities that add a new dimension to your portfolio. If you missed having that realization earlier, and in case you do not convert to your preferred school this year, you should surely re-apply with a solid strategy. This profile enhancement would need to show as a take-off point in your career graph depending on your goals. For example, you could negotiate an international assignment, get into beginner roles in an industry you want to break into post MBA, or in a strategic role in a startup or in consulting where you get hands-on experience in the building blocks of businesses. I feel there would be no dearth of opportunities for someone who is set on securing a top MBA

I would be happy to connect and provide honest feedback. Feel free to reach out to us at [email protected] for further guidance.

Best wishes!

Hi Meetsaluja14,

Academics: While a 73.1% in your B.Tech. is decent, it might not be competitive enough for top business schools like ISB. Hence, it would be helpful if you could improve your GRE score to a 330+ and also highlight any academic achievements or awards that you might have received. You can also showcase academic readiness through extra courses and certifications in your niche. This would help evaluate your academic potential better.

Leadership experience: With 2 years of work experience, there is not much leadership you can showcase through your work. You have mentioned that you have volunteering experiences with leadership positions. It would be helpful if you could provide more details on your roles and responsibilities in those positions. This would help us assess your leadership potential better.

Goals and aspirations: The admissions committee would be interested in knowing your career goals and aspirations. Therefore, it would be helpful if you could share your future plans and how an MBA from ISB would help you achieve those goals. In the absence of other differentiating factors in your profile, showcasing a high level of clarity in your goals and aspirations and your need for an MBA from ISB can strengthen your profile. A good starting point for you is to first identify what your future goals are and start working in the direction of the goals to show that you are genuinely motivated to achieve them.

Overall, though a common profile, your profile is definitely eligible for the ISB MBA program. However, you should focus on highlighting your strengths and providing more details on your achievements, leadership experiences and future aspirations, and start working in the direction of your goals.

Hi debayanb

You have a rich and diverse full time and freelance work experience, your exposure of working with different nationalities is very valuable if presented well through the essay and the application.

As you have a higher work exp compared to the class average of PGP at ISB, the gmat score range of 600-700 will not suffice. You should ideally target the avg GMAT score of the batch, target of 720 or above will make your profile stronger. However, it is not a cut off score.

Post MBA plan is not very clear, you certainly can leverage your rich past and current work experience and grow in the consulting domain. Changing your field of work and the interest shared is generic, we encourage you to register for our profile evaluation and discuss with an Ex Admissions officer who will guide you further.

Hello, Everyone

I'd like receiving views from current/ex ISB grads (and possibly from admissions team at ISB) on my profile. To follow my career ambitions, I've been exploring possibilities of doing an MBA, but only from a well reputed business school such as ISB.

Work experience:

2016-20
Infosys, Senior engineer

2020-23 (currently)
PwC, Senior Consultant

Education:
Class 10, CBSE (87%)
Class 12, CBSE (77%)
B.Tech (NIT Agartala) (8.3 CGPA, 2nd rank in our branch)

I've won many client recommendations during my stint at both the firms. I am fairly visible to the leadership team at my firm. Hopefully, I can draw decent recommendation letters from my contacts and manager. My clients have been from all around the world. I have exposure towards working with people from Germany, US, UK and a couple more European countries.

I've also worked as a Freelancer (Content writer) during my B.Tech years (all 4 of them). I've never received a review less than 4 stars from any of my clients.

My concern is that I dont test well in a time constrained environment. I've never really taken a GMAT mock test but most of the questions that people seem to solve so easily here, appear daunting to me. But I could gather a score of 600-700 in GMAT.

Currently, I play a senior role within my team at PwC, where I help my team mates with their professional matters. I also play an active part in recruitement for our team.

Why do I want to do an MBA? Honestly, I want to change my field of work. Areas such as finance, economics and business interest me. While I'm excellent at the work I do (IT consultant), I would like to explore other areas.

I'll be grateful if you can give a profile evaluation, based on a cursory glance of my profile.

Thanks!
Debayan

Hi Kanipad,

With 8 years of experience, you will need to demonstrate strong leadership skills through your application and the transition to a leadership role post ISB shouldn't be difficult, given the range of recruiters at ISB. But just about 5% of the class at ISB comes with 8+ years of experience (refer to the class profile) - it will therefore not be easy to make the cut. Will be wise to apply to IIMA and C 1-year programs along with ISB. Overall, for your profile, a strong application will be more critical - and a 700+ GMAT should be fairly fine - higher the better.

All the Best!

Kanipad hope this finds you well.

I have recently helped several 30–38-year-old aspirants crack IIM A and ISB admits. I am going to be candid in my feedback, so it helps you plan better for what you are about to face in the upcoming application season and after.

1. There is a certain level of information asymmetry that exists in the market which makes most Indian MBA/PGP applicants make ISB their first choice (probably due to the great marketing efforts of ISB :) ). But yes, as the last comment mentioned, ISB caters to a relatively younger set of experienced professionals at this point. I have first-hand feedback from ISB students with over 8+ years of experience that opportunities out of ISB are not as they had expected due to the very large cohort and more focused recruitment toward folks with 3-6 years of professional experience. And therefore, you must add schools focused on more experienced professionals (for example IIM A and B PGPX) to your target list and work harder to maximize the admits since the IIMs have much smaller intakes than ISB for the 1 year full-time PGP programs.

2. 8 years in an engineering PSU is not the strongest of profiles. But your solid foundation in finance and your latest stint in retail banking should give you the edge you need. Be smart and deliberate in how you pitch your story so that growth progression is evident despite a seemingly mundane career. I am sure there's a lot more depth to your story.

3. Your undergrad pedigree is good. But still, you should target a high GMAT score to cross the initial hurdle of getting serious consideration from any of these top Indian B Schools. Target at least a 720 to make a strong case for yourself.

Feel free to write/email to me at [email protected] should you want to connect at a suitable time to discuss your profile.

Best wishes

Hey Meetsaluja14,

Please see below our feedback.

You have a strong extra curriculars (state level badminton player and publishing a research paper). You should think of including these in your storyline. Additionally, given you graduated in 2020, your profile falls in the sweet spot of ISB's PGP when it comes to number of years of work ex. (~40% of students have 3-5 years of work ex. at ISB).
On the areas of improvements, you might want to consider retaking GRE test in order to partially overcome the impact of your academic scores. Moreover, your score is less than the mean ISB GRE score of 328 (Class of 2023). Another area to take a closer look would be your work experience. Your profile falls in the over represented pool (IT background) and therefore, in order to differentiate yourself from other applicants, you should focus on your career progression (i.e. promotions, achievements etc.) in your application.

Hope this was helpful! Feel free to ping us in case of any questions.
We are a bunch of ISB alums who help potential ISB candidates with profile positioning, essays review and interview mocks.

With warm regards,
Team Fly

Hi,

Sharing a quick profile evaluation:

1. Academics - Strong. With a strong GMAT score to go with it, you could be rest assured on this part of your profile.
2. Extracurriculars - Medium to strong (depending on the level of involvement in the CSR and the pro bono consulting engagements). Mentoring teams for the PM role is also a good point you can highlight.
3. Work experience - Taking up stretch projects and working with International clients both are strong experiences. Focus on the aligning your experience, stories and goals throughout your application including the essays.

Your profile has a lot of pluses you could build upon for a strong application.

All the best! You can always reach out to us for a more detailed discussion if any.

Hello yaygmat

For a comprehensive profile evaluation, please also share your career goals and estimated GMAT score.
That will help assess strengths/weaknesses better. Based on the information shared, work profile and extracurricular look good, but not recommended to look at elements in isolation.

You may want to read here on what factors work in a profile and here to add to your research on career goals.

Hi yaygmat,

1. Academics: You have good scores across the acads with reasonable B.Tech college credibility
2. # years of work ex.: Not a major contributing factor but right in the sweetspot. ~40% of the class of 2023 had 3-5 years of work experiences.
3. Quality of work ex.: You have the credibility of being associated with a top MNC. Additionally, from your description, you seem to have differentiated yourself from a larger cluster of IT candidates.
4. Extra-curriculars: Lots of them. While we can't comment on the impact levels of these activities (not sufficient info given), "PM connect" looks unique/ interesting.

Points to consider-
1. Storyline/ positioning: You should demonstrate career progression (given you changed your jobs) in your application and weave in your affiliation with new age tech/ trends (5G) and your experience on being a "PM connect" core member (if your post-MBA goal is to get into a PM role)
2. Goals: It is better if there is continuity between your pre-MBA ex. / post-MBA goals (in terms of either sector/ domain or function). You should also have clarity on how ISB would help get you to your post-MBA goal.
3. GMAT: Given your profile, it is better if you score at least around the average score of ISB (720 for the class of 2023).

Hope this was helpful! Feel free to ping us in case of any questions.
We are a bunch of ISB alums who help potential ISB candidates with profile positioning, essays review and interview mocks.

With warm regards,
Team Fly
