Hello everyone

Please evaluate my profile.

I work in a private sector bank and have an experience of 8 years as on July 2023. I have experience retail banking mainly in lending, forex and trade finance.

10th - 88.4
12th - 72
B.tech - 8.4/10

I had been actively participating in every kind of extra curriculars in school and college.

What are the chances to get into a ISB, IIMA or IIM B ? And what should be my approach?

Hi AvantikaK,

Based on the limited information provided, it's difficult to assess your chances of getting into these top B-schools. However, we recommended that you aim for a GMAT score of at least 700 or above and target to showcase your professional achievements and leadership potential in your application. Having a clear post-MBA goal and a strong reason to pursue an MBA will also strengthen your application.

It's also important to research and understand the culture and values of each of the B-schools you're targeting, and tailor your application to showcase why you're a good fit for that particular program.

For a more detailed 1-1 strategy session, please write to [email protected] or fill the form at http://www.admitexpert.com

Good luck!

Hello all,

I am planning to do a second MBA. I have done b.sc in physics hons and my graduation marks was low. This was 45% only. I did one MBA from a local college and i have 71% in my first MBA. My 10th marks is 85.85% from West Bengal board and 12th marks is 84.85% from West Bengal board. I have 2 years of experience. I am targeting ISB Hyderabad as I don't want to leave my country as of now. Should I take GMAT with this profile and ISB is possible?
Please provide your valuable suggestions.

Hi diganta.banerjee

I would say YES, ISB is possible provided you can deliver a good GMAT score and back it up with a strong application. Since your experience is just 2 years with not-so-great academic performance in comparison to many other applicants, therefore, it's going to be challenging for you unless you get a GMAT score in the range of 720 or above.

In case you need any support and suggestion then you can reach us directly as well.

Hi diganta.banerjee hope you are doing well

As much as you may not like it, low undergraduate scores are definitely a red flag for admissions committees unless you can demonstrate a solid GMAT/GRE score and a plausible reason for your poor performance during college. If you are serious about pursuing another MBA, you should focus entirely at this point on attaining a high GMAT score (740 and above), because even an average GMAT score may not cut it for schools like ISB.

Since the other details of your profile are not clearly mentioned, it's difficult to suggest the right course of action.

If you are interested in ISB, these links should provide you with some clarity on the application strategy for ISB.

About Me: I am a 26-year-old male.

Education: I scored 70% in 10th grade and 90% in 12th grade. Due to my CA training, I had to drop out of regular college, but I completed my B.Com (Correspondence) with 58%. I passed my CA in Nov-20 with a score of 58%, and I have also cleared CFA Level 2.

Experience: I worked as a Trainee at Grant Thornton for three years in audit. After completing my qualifications, I worked as an Executive-Statutory Audit at Ernst & Young for six months. Currently, I am working as an Assistant Manager - Merger and Acquisition at Deloitte for the last 1.5 years. Throughout my professional career, I have gained diverse experience working in various industries such as Manufacturing, Textile, Direct-to-Consumer (D2C), Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), and Information Technology-enabled Services (ITeS).

I have also had the opportunity to be involved in major fundraising initiatives, such as the successful IPO of an Indian client that raised $100 million. Additionally, I have helped clients acquire foreign entities with considerations over $100 million.

Extracurricular: Although I never participated in any extracurricular activities during my college days due to correspondence, I have a strong interest in Chess/Sudoku and Marathon. Unfortunately, I do not have any certificates to prove my skills.

I am a studious individual and am confident that I can score 720+ in the GMAT.

So how my profile look for ISB or top university in the world like HEC or INSEAD?

Hello diganta.banerjee,

I am an ISB alum, CO15 and have bene guiding applicants in their admission journeys since then. While it is definitely possible to get into ISB with your background and creds, below are a few things you should definitely keep in mind:
1. GMAT score in excess of 720 to counter the below average academic performance.
2. What is your rationale behind opting for a 2nd MBA?
3. How will you add value to the ISB cohort based on your non-engineering background and the fact that you already have some management education.
4. A min. of 3 years of professional full time work ex by the time you enroll for the class.

Note: You should drop the notion of specifically applying to the Hyderabad campus since admission committees do not distinguish or evaluate you for a specific campus. I was from the Hyderabad campus but spent a term in Mohali and I can truly vouch for the “1 School 2 Campus” motto and as an applicant you should also aim to get into ISB and not get into ISB Hyderabad.

Feel free to reach out to us in case you seek help with your application materials.

Cheers and all the very best!

Hey all!

Hope all of you are doing well! I just wanted to drop my profile and see how competitive it is to get into a top b-school.

10th Grade score : 92%
12th Grade score : 93%
Undergrad in BSc. Economics, Mathematics and Statistics from Christ University : 3.35

Right now working as a Statistical Analyst at a big pharmaceutical company (GlaxoSmithKline). I'll be completing 3 years in the month of August. I've received a promotion already last year and I will be receiving a promotion in the month of November where I will be a SLP (Study Lead Programmer) which essentially means that I would lead a segment of my project on my own. This would also make me the youngest SLP in the company at the moment. My work entails creating efficacy and safety analysis datasets/displays for a clinical trial that would on completion be submitted to the FDA or other medical regulatory agencies for review.

In terms of extracurriculars - I was in the university choir (Christ University choir is considered as one of the best choirs in India. Some of their performances are present on Youtube). In my company, I organised a large event which was hosted to invite one of the CXO's to India after the pandemic. (the budget for the event was almost a crore) - had to interact with the heads of various departments within the Indian office. I was also part of an information sharing club within my company where we conducted innovative ways of sharing new processes that have been introduced within our company. I've been invited as a guest speaker for one of my university's Alumni interactions. Have been in multiple high production musicals (each musical costing around 40-50 lakhs ) back in school.

This is a brief about me. How competitive is my profile? Also when I am to write my GMAT, what would be an ideal score that I should aim for with this profile?

Appreciate all of you taking the time to read through my profile! :)
Would love to hear your thoughts!

Hi mj2610

Very interesting indeed. You have touched all the aspects that B-Schools desire in applicants - analytical soundness, career progression, passion projects, and extracurricular engagements. I would say you have a very strong profile for ISB, and you must further top it with a decent GMAT score (730+) to demonstrate consistency.

What are your plans for an MBA/PGP at this point, and why do you need a PGP? It's interesting how many aspirants miss mentioning their goals and expectations from an MBA/PGP when they ask for a profile evaluation. Do you want to build on your industry expertise in the pharma sector as a specialist or do you want to transition into a new field? Perhaps the most important aspect that will determine your success in an MBA admissions process is how you describe your goals. There will be extensive discussions around your goals in the ISB interview and without PGP justifying your goals, you are likely to dampen your chances of admission to ISB.

I have written extensively about ISB interviews, goal strategies, and LORs here. Feel free to make use to build perspective for applications process

Thank you for your prompt response MBAGuide!

I apologize for not mentioning my career goals and post-MBA goals. In terms of short term goals I have 2 in mind -
1) I would love to explore a more strategic role in the pharmaceutical industry.
2) I am quite interested in consulting. That is one avenue that I would definitely want to explore.

Long term goal would be to transition to a role that involves strategic management.

One of my expectations from an MBA is to help me transition from a R&D development role to a more client facing/strategic management role. I'm also looking at b-schools that have had placements in the pharmaceutical/healthcare sectors and I see that ISB, INSEAD and few other universities in Europe and Canada have had their students working at some of the big pharmaceutical companies in the world. I would love to remain in the same industry and change the function that I am in right now. A secondary (backup) option/goal would be a career in consulting.

Hope this adds clarity to my profile.

mj2610 thanks for sharing further. Now it makes much more sense :)

For healthcare and pharma, you can have Tuck and Duke MBAs on your list (because of the medical schools' affiliations). I am not too informed about the industry focus of Canadian colleges but I have sent applicants from pharma into Tuck and Duke. Both schools have a solid healthcare focus and are consulting powerhouses. I would suggest keeping track of the early rounds.
For Management consulting, you could pitch generalist consulting roles within the pharma sector in the short term and eventually pivot to a specialist track (consulting companies allow that) a few years down the line. Long term you could also pivot to big pharma in leadership positions. Obviously how you express your interest in a particular field within healthcare/pharma will make your candidacy unique.

I am not too sure how you would fit into INSEAD's class given your work exp is on the lower side. Also, the lack of international exposure or entrepreneurial experience (anything that makes you stand out as a young applicant).

best wishes

Hey mj2610,

Quite a solid profile you have got there being from the pharma industry with a background in data. The industry is witnessing an upswing particularly post the resources allocated during the Covid times and thus there is a strong requirement for candidates like yourself who can help leverage data to take crucial decision.
Coming to your profile, your undergrad GPA is on the lower end and thus you will need to compensate that with a strong GMAT score (typically above 720) along with any other strong certifications, coursework that you can talk about. Since you will have 3 years by August, you will be broadly in the optimum work ex range for ISB, however for international MBA programs you will probably 1 year early. If you are actively exploring ISB, would suggest that you apply this Fall and craft a strong application. A new pharma city is coming up in Hyderabad, and it will help Hyderabad evolve into the pharma capital of India, so maybe try to make that linkage.
For international schools, would suggest waiting a year and exploring Consulting for US based program as there are firms like LEK, ZS etc. who recruit actively for pharma / healthcare consulting, getting an offer in the pharma industry within the US will difficult since its very regulated and may not be open to international students. We have had candidates pursue offers with healthcare / pharma consulting during summer internships and returning to their employers full time. There are some good companies in EU such as Sanofi, GSK, Novartis and hence good European programs such as INSEAD, HEC, Oxbridge can be considered as they are feeders to these companies. Most of the large pharma companies have Leadership Development role which are rotational programs as they want to get a 360 degree view of business before expecting you to specialize in an area, thus these will be the ideal target post your MBA. These leadership programs are a pipeline for multiple roles such as Product Marketing, Corporates Strategy, Corporate Finance M&A, Product Development etc.

Hope that answers your queries? Do feel free to reach out in case of any other doubts.

Thanks,

My main responsibility was to ensure that the team executed the right campaigns during events hosted by the organization. I had to make sure that all posts and videos were in the correct format, with exclusive content and captions that were posted on time.
* I had to monitor social media metrics and analytics to track the effectiveness of our campaigns and adjust strategies accordingly. I also had to collaborate with other members of the team, such as graphic designers and content creators, to ensure that our social media presence was visually appealing and engaging.

* Organised the Kitchen King event, which had over 100 participants, and oversaw the prize distribution by the Chancellor of the university.

Department of Youth Capital:

* Volunteered at the Department of Youth Capital, in the Division of Student Welfare, where I contributed to office management tasks.
* Successfully handled all backend office requirements and ensured the smooth functioning of different teams.
* Effectively managed office management tasks, including data entry, scheduling, and organising events.
* Developed strong organisational skills and attention to detail while single-handedly managing office management responsibilities.
* Collaborated with other volunteers to ensure seamless execution of events and projects.

CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES:
* First prize in the Odishi dance competition at the district level, where I represented Odisha's traditional dance form.
* Bronze medal in regional level kabaddi competition.
* Participation in One World and represented Mauritius Country.
* Participation in one India and represented Goa state and culture.

Additional Activities:
* Volunteered at different NGOs during my vacations and Corona time. After completing of the 12th board, I am associated with NGOs for volunteer purposes.

What do you think of my chances of getting into T20? I am more inclined towards MBA from ISB. But what other colleges I can target in USA/UK?

Hello AnanyaAnindita

ISB will evaluate your profile on four factors- 1. Academic potential, 2. Work experience, 3. Diversity 4. Career goals.

Within these, academic potential is average (a 700 GMAT is decent, but doesn't help stand out), however, your work experience seems to be your stand out strength. Even though on the lower side (I'll consider 2 years as that is the actual full time experience), the career progression and achievements look solid. You have the potential for great story telling in your essays and really impress the admissions committee.
Diversity comes from some of your extracurricular and just like work ex, if you can weave a strong narrative here, then it will put you in a good position.
Lastly, you will need career goals that are not only clear and realistic but also justify why MBA now, so early in your career, especially when you are on a strong growth trajectory. Don't see a mention of career goals, so cannot comment on this aspect.
All in all I see a good shot if you present your story and career goals well. And your profile would have been bullet proof if you had a 720 or more (though current score is not a deal breaker in your specific case)

Best

Hello Bish0p

If you can get a 720+, combined with a CA profile (shows good potential for story telling) you have a decent shot. Of course, don't forget to talk about your post MBA goals as well and showcase why you are ready for MBA now.
Wouldn't stress too much about no certificates for the extracurriculars as long as you are able to show how these activities have improved your life and how are these relevant to the b school experience (will they help you add value to the experience of your batch mates inside and outside the classroom).
For HEC and INSEAD, the work ex looks on the lower side.

You may want to read here on what factors work in a profile and here to add to your research on career goals.

Hi AnanyaAnindita hope you are doing great!

You will have to demonstrate crystal clear vision and what you wish to achieve from pursuing an MBA/PGP.

Let me emphasize this point: for younger applicants, Business Schools will assess the level of maturity and clarity of their professional aspirations, which should be grounded in the short but rich experience gained during the early stages of their careers. You did not mention about your goals at all. And your internship will not be counted toward your full-time experience; therefore, you will have to add a lot of weight to the projects and responsibilities you handled as a full-time employee. Anything short of an elaborate and well researched goals plan will not get you the desired outcome.

Your GMAT is ok. I am happy about the Q50. You should rather focus on profile building at this point.

Here are some insights shared by me that you can take advantage of if you want to apply to ISB this year.

Avoid these pitfalls in goals essays

For schools abroad, I would suggest waiting for 1-2 more years and further enhancing your profile taking up bigger, better responsibilities.

I have helped applicants with exactly 2 years of full-time experience crack ISB admits (not EEO). Feel free to reach out and discuss your prospects in detail in the coming week.

Hi mj2610,

Please see below our feedback (from ISB PoV as we are only helping candidates applying for ISB currently).

While 10th and 12th class scores are good, we believe you would need to balance your undergrad GPA with an above average GMAT score. The average GMAT score for the ISB class of 2023 is 720. Therefore, to be on the safer side, we suggest you target a score of 720+. Your work experience and the breadth of your extra curriculars (with a flavour of picking up some of the business skillsets - scale of the events and the nature of interactions) will set you apart from other potential candidates. Your aspirations post MBA are definitely within reach, given your work experience. You should also start thinking about how you would leverage ISB to get to your post MBA goal (in terms of healthcare related courses, well known faculty in this space, location of the school in case of Hyderabad campus- Hyderabad being the major hub for life sciences companies etc.).

You are right! ISB has a good number of its alumni working in the life sciences space across the pharma value chain (R&D/ clinical, reg affairs, RWE/ analytics, commercial ops etc.) in several functions- corporate strategy, consulting, business development etc. In fact we have an ISB alumnus with us who is currently working in a corporate strategy role at a healthcare services firm (digital transformation space). Therefore, ISB can be a good target school if you want to get to your post-MBA goal.

Hope this was helpful! We are a bunch of ISB alums who help potential ISB candidates with profile positioning, essay reviews and interview mocks. Feel free to book a 15 min free session for more discussion- https://calendly.com/reachusfly/15min

Regards,
mj2610
