IDK, personally, I would fly into NYC and rent a car. It gives you a little more flexibility to tour the area and give yourself some time to tour NYC afterwards if you've never been!
As for rooms, I've AirBnb'd in Ithaca before and it's not a bad option. I've also stayed at the Best Western University Inn and although it's decent, I believe it's overpriced. The best hotel to stay at that is reasonably priced is the Comfort Inn or Hampton Inn by the Wegmans.
Just IMHO.

This is exactly what I planned
I have never been in NY before and thats why in order to spend sometime there and to get over the effect of jet lag, I am planning to fly there on 2th of March. Depend on interview invitations from other schools, I will opt renting option and it may give more flexibility to me. Although I am not sure about the quality or distance from Cornell, I booked a room in Country Inn&Suites based on price and guest rankings . Before I thought to be splurge and stay in the Statler Hotel, however it becomes more appealing to spend same amount of money in NY 
!
