Q1. A neighborhood in downtown Pittsburgh has experienced a sharp increase in residential break-ins. The point of entry is always a basement window that is surrounded by bushes or some other object. The neighborhood watchgroup believes these entry points are chosen because they are difficult to view from public thoroughfares such as adjacent streets or back alleys and has recommended trimming all large hedges that obscure basement windows. Which of the following contains a flaw in logic that most closely parallels the one contained in the passage? (A) People who like rabbits can’t possibly like dogs because dogs hunt rabbits. (B) Martha’s geraniums always die; she must be buying weak geraniums. (C) When it is dark Sandra can’t drive. Sandra is not driving, so it must be dark. (D) if priests oppose murder, then all religions must oppose murder. (E) Highly trained dogs can track and this dog can track, therefore it must be highly trained. Difficulty - Hard

Q2. Many vaccines create immunity to viral diseases by introducing a certain portion of the disease-causing virus’s outer coating into the body. Exposure to that part of a virus is as effective as exposure to the whole virus in stimulating production of antibodies that will subsequently recognize and kill the whole virus. To create a successful vaccine of this type, doctors must first isolate in the disease-causing virus a portion that stimulates antibody production. Now that a suitable portion of the virus that causes hepatitis E has been isolated, doctors claim they can produce a vaccine that will produce permanent immunity to that disease. Which one of the following, if true, most strongly counters the doctors’ claim? (A) Most of the people who contract hepatitis E are young adults who were probably exposed to the virus in childhood also. (B) Some laboratory animals exposed to one strain of the hepatitis virus developed immunity to all strains of the virus. (C) Researchers developed a successful vaccine for another strain of hepatitis, hepatitis B, after first isolating the virus that causes it. (D) The virus that causes hepatitis E is very common in some areas, so the number of people exposed to that virus is likely to be quite high in those areas. (E) Many children who are exposed to viruses that cause childhood diseases such as chicken pox never develop those diseases.

CR Questions May - 31 :

Q1. The plastics commonly used in household garbage bags take, on average, 100 years to decompose in landfills. From an environmental standpoint, the plastic bag industry should be forced to switch to newly developed plastics, which begin to decompose after only 20 years.

Which of the following pieces of information would be most helpful in evaluating the argument above?

(A) the rate of growth or decline in sales of plastic garbage bags

(B) the number of plastic garbage bags sold last year that eventually wound up in landfills

(C) the feasibility of enforcing legislation that regulates the plastics used in garbage bags

(D) the length of time it takes the newly developed plastic to fully decompose in landfills.

(E) a comparison of the production cost of one bag made with the old plastics and of one bag made with the new plastics

Q2. Politician: Five years ago, when we streamlined the screening operations of the Transportation Security Administration to decrease excessive expenditures under the new budget guidelines, critics claimed that the streamlining would have a detrimental effect on the ability of the TSA to detect dangerous airline passengers and cargo, thereby leading to diminished air-travel safety. However, recently-compiled TSA statistics clearly show that the critics’ claims were unfounded. Throughout the years following the implementation of our streamlining procedures, there has been an overall decrease in reports of dangerous passengers and dangerous cargoes that have made it through TSA screening checkpoints and onto airplanes.

The politician’s argument is flawed because it fails to consider the possibility that:

A. not every screening expenditure decreased by the TSA streamlining procedures was excessive
B. budget-driven streamlining of airplane maintenance procedures might also have led to diminished air-travel safety
C. a drop in reported observations of a phenomenon might not indicate a corresponding drop in the actual incidence of that phenomenon
D.decreases in excessive expenditures related to screening operations might have enabled the TSA to hire more employees dedicated to improving air-travel safety
E. decreases in excessive expenditures related to screening operations were not sufficient to meet the requirements of the new budget guidelines

For one thing, the discovery of the scandal confirms that Country X has a strong regulatory system, as the following considerations show. In any stock market, some fraudulent activity is inevitable. Q1. The mayor of town T decided to lower the sales tax in order to boost the sales volume and therefore increase the budget by eventually receiving more sales tax as the result of the increased sales volume. The mayor wants to follow the example of town J, where such an experiment helped increase the budget twice in a three-year term.

Which of the following statements is the best proof that the opponents to the mayor’s proposal can use in order to persuade the population of town T not to support this decision?

(A) Town J is located very close to the borders of other three states, which causes residents of other states to shop in town J, as the sales taxes in those other states are higher than in this state. Town T is located far from any state border.

(B) Town T is not big enough to make the difference of the sales tax received to budget positive as the result of the proposed change.

(C) Town J has many more industrial plants that purchase raw materials from the town’s mines.

(D) This kind of an experiment did not work in any other of the six towns that lowered the sales tax.

Hi WInterschool,
Could you please check this question, or share source?
I think all options are incorrect, If this is a case of First condition;
If (simple present), then (simple future)
A&C- uses simple past
BDE-Do not use will (simple future) ; Usage of would is accepted when stating future in the past or hypothetical

Hi, question is alright.

your reasoning is wrong. "would" has various uses in all types of tenses. In this case, "would" represent future possibility

Hi everyone. I have a general question. After preparing a topic, let’s say CR..and revisiting it after a couple of days for revision, how am I supposed to revise the questions I did? Am I supposed to solve them again? (I have this fear constantly that what if I might not be able to solve them correctly again) Or should I skip the questions and just revise the theoretical dos and don’ts? How do you all revise? Please help me.

if you mean reviewing, then you absolutely need to review every single question you have a fear of not being able to solve again…. The only way to improve is address that issue. The goal is to answer r set single question you got right or wrong if you encounter it again.

When you review a question, you may not need to solve it if you remember the question and the solution and the answer choices. I had some questions I would revisit every week for four weeks. What I would do is explain to myself where the problem in the question was, why I got it wrong, and what to watch out for next time so I don’t get it wrong .
