I want to make a joke in an essay but can't tell if it'd be appropriate. Here's the example:
"....... I believe I possess plenty of capability and aptitude to handle this. At least this is what my mother tells me."

One's mother is likely to praise her child more generously than others
also "plenty of capability and aptitude" are a little vague. which capabilities are you talking about?
I don't think its wrong to say that your mom tells you this, but you would need to have a strong example to support whatever you are trying to say.

erlandgas I think that is funny, I mean of course this is only as a joke it's not real evidence....Anyways, in general I feel these things endear you to adcom and separate you. Demonstrating a sense of humor is highly desired (but not to go overboard and appear irreverent to the process.)
