Heard from my friend who applied first round that admissions sent an email the night before the announcement date for dings, and called admits on the day of announcement. Will not be sleeping well tonight. I've been so neurotic, waking up in the middle of the night and checking emails/forums/website.

what was the timing? (couldn't resist taking this to the next level of fixation))

From hearing R1 people recount the story, though, it sounds like it might have been a mistake, as many of them didn't have decisions updated online yet at that hour. Possibly an email meant to go out at 1-2pm was scheduled for am by accident. Check a few pages back on this thread for that, or about 30 pages back to see what people were saying as it happened.
I got my ding in Round 1 shortly after 1AM EST, so I think a little after midnight Evanston time, the Dings and WL applicants get e-slapped in the face. I saw the email over breakfast (~7AM) and checked my status to (not surprisingly) see my ding.
Somehow I was convinced that the admissions people were calling R2 admits today. You can imagine my relief when I got here and found out otherwise!

Glad it ended in a decent surprise! (Though a better surprise would have been to get a phone call.) I don't envy your day tho! I have been a mess knowing that the calls havent even started yet.
Then wait until 12 PM Chicago Time awake. Refresh your email account furiously. And remember... No news is good news. If you don't get the email, you are most likely in.

Buahahaha some horrible advice it is! just go to sleep. Those of us that got to figure this little system out during the first round were lucky enough not to know, so we were not anxiously waiting for the email.

So is this 12PM timeline specifically mentioned somewhere or is that based off of R1 observations?
I guess I'll turn off my cell phone tonight... I don't want to be notified of an email at 1am, because I know that'll mean bad news! I'd reather see it in the morning and at least get a good (??) night of sleep... And maybe, just maybe, wake up, see there's nothing in my inbox, and during the day receive the much expected call! Best of luck guys! I know these comments serve no purpose for you, but as I cannot talk about any of this stuff at work, I try to say useless things here to relieve the stress... I promise that if you do the same (and many of you clearly do!) I will not complain about it!
Maybe help things along with a few swigs of nyquil? Too addict-y?

I think it was a mistake as well. It sounded like they had some new people working in admissions and had some computer issues a la Cornell. Hopefully you all don't get bad news this evening/morning ...
