Hello everyone,

I am a recent graduate from IIT Kharagpur where I completed my B. Tech in Civil Engineering. I have recently written GMAT and achieved a 740 score (Q51 V38 IR 7). I wanted to know about my chances at top MBA schools in the US (such as Wharton, Harvard etc) and also at top MiM schools (such as HEC).

A little about my profile for reference: I am working at Barclays as a Graduate Analyst (software developer) and I will be completing my 2 years there by July 2023.

I am the co-founder of an NGO which teaches over 200 students and has around 200 volunteers. We have gained significant recognition and also have been marketed by Rhea Kapoor's Team.

In college my CGPA was 8.54 and my class rank was 3. I was part of our college 's tech fest team. I have some projects (none published) in my resume as well.

In school I was part of the cricket and football team, won the best speaker award and also won student of the year. 10th: 10 CGPA; 12th: 96.2%

Would appreciate if someone could provide me some feedback. Thanks in advance

Hi User8789 hope you are doing well

Your profile is more suited to Top MiM programs at this point than a Top 10 MBA primarily because of the 2-year work experience but also because the professional arc is not clear - What impact have you created at work as a software developer in the last 2 years.

Cofounding an NGO is the USP of your candidacy and if you can corroborate a significant impact in the social sector or an unconventional career trajectory, you may be on track to getting a top-class MBA in another couple of years. My suggestion would be to scout for career opportunities that add a new dimension to your portfolio. If you feel you missed having that realization earlier, it is still not late as you are relatively young for the average MBA cohort at your target schools.

If you are ok to dedicate another 1-2 years working to enhance your profile, you can have a fair shot at the top 10 Schools down the line. This profile enhancement would need to show as a take-off point in your career graph. For example, you could negotiate an international assignment with your employer, or get into beginner roles in an industry you want to break into post MBA, or in the strategy team in the social sector or at MBB where you get hands-on experience in the building blocks of businesses. I feel there would be no dearth of opportunities for someone with your credentials and IIT pedigree.

While getting an MiM might seem like a quick resolution to your career woes at this moment, do evaluate if you would be ok not having an MBA at a later point in life when most of your peers may have MBA degrees. It should be your personal but a well deliberated choice.

Best wishes

Hi User8789

- The MBA v/s the MiM is a fundamentally different decision. Read this article and this article to think more about this.
- You will need to showcase solid leadership for the deferred MBA. While the NGO is really good, we will need to know more about the projects you worked on, the impact you had, and the goals you want to pursue. While CGPA/class rank look good, you will need to showcase more parameters to really stand out. The GMAT looks good.
- You already have 1+ year of experience, so may not be eligible for all deferred MBA programs. Also, some MiM programs (such as LBS) do not accept applicants with 2+ years of experience. Keep these factors in mind before you think of your consideration set of schools.

Hi everyone, could you please critically review my profile?

Background, nationality, and educational background:
- 26 years old, Female, Indian national, currently working in India as Clinical Dentist
- BDS ( Bachelor of Dental Surgery), 3.6/4.0 CGPA from a Top Dental College in Hyderabad, India
- I have 1 International and 2 National Research Papers
- Led the college Cricket and Basketball team for 3 years as a captain. Three consecutive wins in cricket and two in basketball.
- Heading a team of fourteen, I led organizing various academic and sports events at our college fest attended by over 800 students.
- During graduation, I led a team of ten and the finances for our convocation day.

GMAT: 750

Work experience and leadership:
- Industry: Healthcare Providers
- Current position: Associate Dentist
- Work ex and progression: 2.5 years. I was promoted once and am on track to be promoted to Senior Dentist at the start of next year.
- In my current role, I am managing 70% of the clinical cases and mostly do the main conversation with the patients. I also manage Interns and Consulting Dentists.

Community and others:
- I am passionate about mentoring and have volunteered with NEET exam Aspirants.
- Mentored 8 students for their MDS (Masters of Dental Surgery) and MS applications (around 3years)
- Lead monthly Free Dental Health Checkup Camps (around 3.5 years)

Post-MBA goals:
I want to pursue an MBA to improve my leadership skills and learn business and operations point of view. Also, to learn and polish key business and analytical skills.

Short-term: I want to do Healthcare corporate strategy/operations consulting.
Long-term: Given my extensive Clinical Experience and Medical background, I am interested in continuing in Healthcare consulting or moving to leadership roles in Healthcare domain like Pharmaceutical Industry.

Questions?
- Is 750 GMAT sufficient for my profile?
- People’s management: I manage interns and Consulting Dentists for some specific cases. Do you think this counts?
- Having a Dental background and clinical experience, will I be at a disadvantage in the admission process?
- I will apply in R2 this year. Would I be at disadvantage for not applying in R1? Should I wait until next year to apply in R1?
- What are my chances for Wharton?

I would really appreciate your review, thanks a lot!

Hey User8789,

Let me start by saying that a CGPA of 8.54 from IIT Kharagpur shows that you did well in school and had a good name in your undergrad. All the best schools out there really like this, and it looks good on your application.

Since you work at Barclays, this is another good thing about you. Since business schools want to see a certain kind of business impact, you might want to name the clients you're working for and give numbers for any changes you've made at work. You can also talk about and quantify roles of leadership.

Your activities outside of school are fine. In fact, the fact that you helped start an NGO gives your profile a big boost because it shows that you are entrepreneurial and like to help people. You can talk about how many people came to the event because you are on the tech team.

You can also sign up for some courses that are related to what you want to do. I think you just graduated, so getting an MBA seems hard since most dream schools want applicants to have four to six years of experience.

I think you should go for the Master's in Management programme if you want to get into the best business schools. In fact, it will give you about the same amount of money as an MBA. If you want to get an MBA, you can work for three to four years and then apply.

For MiM, I would recommend you can look at schools like:

1. Duke
2. Cornell
3. Michigan Ross
4. Kellogg
5. LBS
6. Imperial
7. HEC Paris

If you need more help, we'd be happy to setup a call and give more pointers on how to improve your profile and the right schools you should target.

I think we have a great strong profile. I feel some of the challenge will be communicating your career goals and explaining the reasoning for business school. Many of your classmates will be getting for the job you had a couple years ago and definitely would kill for the job you have today 😂

Venture-capital and start up world is highly structured and most of the recruiting will be off-campus. I see you your best shot at succeeding in this journey and also getting admission would be to try to connect with some of the current Wharton students who are from a similar background or at least have similar goals and get a better sense from them about the world on the other side. I feel could be very helpful to set your expectations and also be able to draw a parallel to the admissions with other alumni or current students.

PS. I assume you’re also applying to Berkeley and Stanford?

Hey,
So I am a Mechanical Engineer and I am planning to give my GMAT this year, I have 1.5 years of work experience right now and a GPA of 3.04. I have published a book and have my own podcast.
What Business Schools should I apply to? Do I stand a chance at any Ivy League school or M7 business school? And, What should I do to improve my options if I am planning to apply this year?

Parsing your questions:

Q: What Business Schools should I apply to?

A: We need to know WAY more about your background, career goals, and preferences. We have a list of typical questions to ask, so ping us.

Q: Do I stand a chance at any Ivy League school or M7 business school? And, What should I do to improve my options if I am planning to apply this year?

A: Again, it's important we better understand your profile before we make a proper assessment. That said, your GPA and years of experience don't indicate you are a candidate for these top programs. At least a couple more years of experience would help. A strong GMAT would also somewhat counterbalance your somewhat lower GPA.

The best situation here is to sign up for a free consultation with my team. We will pair you up with one of our expert consultants who will go through your background, a plan of action, and our professional admissions services.

Hey HarryPotter7,

Sure, applying to prestigious colleges like M7 or Ivy League schools can be a great goal, but it's important to keep in mind that these schools have very low acceptance rates, often less than 5%. Instead of focusing only on these top schools, it's a good idea to also consider other competitive schools that have a higher chance of acceptance. The key is to start preparing early and give yourself enough time to take the GMAT and work on your Profile.

A good time to take the GMAT would be around March, which is close to the application deadline. This will give you plenty of time to work on your profile, including essays and other materials, to increase your chances of acceptance. Remember, applying to college is a process, and it's important to have a good mix of dream and competitive schools on your list.

If you need more help, we'd be happy to setup a call and give more pointers on how to improve your profile and the right schools you should target.

Hey KQ,

Based on the information you've shared, you've got a fantastic profile for the Moelis Advance Access Program at Wharton! Your background in economics from a top liberal arts college, a master's degree from a partnership program between HEC and Yale, and a GMAT score of 780 are all impressive achievements.

Your summer internship with a top-tier management consulting firm, as well as previous experience in private equity and the Big 4, shows that you have a well-rounded background in business. Plus, your experience as a consultant director in a student consultancy demonstrates strong leadership skills.

Lastly, your goal of remaining in consulting for a few years before transitioning to corporate roles aligns well with the program's focus.

If you need more help, we'd be happy to setup a call and give more pointers on how to improve your profile and the right schools you should target.

Hey KQ,

Thanks for sharing your profile.

Firstly, Congratulations on achieving a stellar GMAT score. Your grades also clearly display your academic excellence. Working in the Big 4 is in itself an achievement. Your volunteering as a consulting director is also highly impressive.

Coming to your post-MBA goal of consulting, it aligns with your prior work experience. This will help you bring collinearity in your post-MBA goals. You will need to exhibit the impact you brought during your internship and leadership qualities of yours. For the deferred programs, primarily, the AdComs look at the diversity of experiences and learnings the candidate has accumulated at the undergrad level. You may try adding good examples which will set you apart to make your profile stronger. Also, highlight the impact of your projects on the company and your learnings from them.

Also, I insist you showcase your unique hobby, however small it may be in your profile. Hobbies and learnings from them add a different perspective for the AdComs. Your essays should be a blend of your personal life and learnings and your experiences from such a diverse college life. Overall you seem fit for the deferred program. It will all depend on how you portray yourself to the AdComs and build a great narrative around your application. Thus, it is really important for you to prepare a strong application.

We have helped a deferred MBA applicant (profile quite similar like yours) to get into Wharton & Columbia, you can read his success story here.

We would like to know more about your profile, to gauge your chances better. Hence, If you’d like, we are happy to get on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and give you a better evaluation. Feel free to schedule a free profile evaluation call with us at your convenience.

Cheers!
