Hi
BASSLJThanks so much to reaching out to Stratus for a
profile review! It is a pleasure to learn more about you. I've pasted your info below and I will respond in blue font with some initial thoughts:
Context is everything in evaluating an applicant. Are you a US citizen? Are you female or male? Are you URM? Because this information will provide you with context in which pools you'd be considered. I will answer nonetheless in some general aspects. In need of some guidance as to whether or not I should take a shot at applying for next fall (2017 start) or if I should hold out another year and possibly retake the GMAT in hopes of getting a higher score.
GMAT Scores:
06/06/15
47 Q
32 V
6 AWA
6 IR
650 Total
11/21/15
46 Q - Extremely disappointed I didn't improve on this section. Had a mishap at the test center and I think it threw me off of my game
41 V
6 AWA
7 IR
710 Total
First of all, Congratulations on this big improvement! Going from 650 to 710 is huge! If you look at the averages of many programs you mention, this is definitely an in range GMAT score.
Previous Education
University of South Carolina
Majors: Business Management, Insurance & Risk Management
Minor: Psychology
GPA: 3.4
This GPA is somewhat neutral. Won't hurt you but also wont give you too many props either. But thankfully this is not a dealbreaker and will keep you in play.
Honors: Dean's List, South Carolina Life Scholar, Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of South Carolina Scholarship, Foundation for Agency Management Excellence Scholarship, Jane and William Bruce Scholarship
(I have a few others)
Good honors- might be helpful in application to list more about what the criteria was for your selection.Work Experience
June 2014 - Current
Good to see 2 yrs but if all you have is 2 yrs you are on the light side for many of the schools on your list. Have you been promoted? Be thinking of a specific project you can highlight.Leading Aerospace Company - We manufacture private jets.
Materials Planner - I work within a supply chain focused role and lead several projects to improve operational efficiency.
Extracurricular Activities
Be thinking not so much of a laundry list but highlight how you were impactful in one of these organizations. Sigma Phi Epsilon
Gamma Iota Sigma
Carolina Entrepreneur Club
United Way Volunteer
Short list of schools:
I'd say that depending on the context part that I mentioned on top of reply- many of these schools are certainly in reach with a 710. I see your work experience tenure as the weakest link and also needing more extracurriculars. University of North Carolina (gmat median 710, gpa 3.4, avg work 5 yrs)etc
Duke similar
Vanderbilt
Emory
Georgia Tech
Georgetown
University of Virginia - see that they had avg age of entry at 27, GMAT 706, gpa 3.5
So yeah, my concerns are that I don't quite have the quant scores I might need to be competitive for my list of schools. I'm also concerned of my lack of work experience being that I've only worked in a professional environment for 2 years now. Also, my current work situation is a bit murky at the moment as my company is going through a bit of a lull and asking for LORs might not be the best idea at this time as I don't want to give them any type of inclination that I might leave. But if push came to shove, I think I can ask my senior manager and possibly my previous manager.
You are right- these are your top issues- but here's what I suggest- if you had to get rec from outside employer due to job uncertainty- just address that in choice of recommender optional essay. Admissions committees understand you may not have a work enviroment that supports MBA and if so having someone who can speak to your work product as a client or former employee is fine. Stratus Prep could really help you with a profile development package- where you strategize with us for 5 hours about what you can do this year and make a plan to be the BEST candidate you can in a year. I think you'll be stronger with 3 yrs work and especially if you can strategically improve key areas like extracurriculars. Be happy to have you get a free consult with us to learn more about how we could help! But if you do go through this year- best of luck to you and I do think you have much to offer but addressing how your work experience at 2 yrs is enough is the biggest issue I see!Your guidance and wisdom is much appreciated
