Hi Sheesho,

Some open-ended comments:

1) Streamlining your goals is important - typically PE/VC would be a difficult industry for someone to break into, especially if they don't have relevant experience. It seems like your experience might have some relevance, but it is not abundantly obvious.

2) 2 years of experience seems to be a bit on the lower side. You need a few strong leadership stories (could b outside of work as well) to compensate for this.

3) The disciplinary action could be a red flag - but there is actually nothing that can be done about it now. YOur explanation about how you've changed since then seems earnest, and we will hope that the adcoms look at it the same way.

With this in mind - you haven't mentioned what schools you are looking at - so let it be said here, that there will be some school that will definitely work for you this year :) But in general, if you are looking at a top 15 - 20 program - a higher GMAT and one additional year of experience (or, sufficient EC leadership to demonstrate leadership potential) will be required.

Feel free to set up a call to discuss further.

Regards,
Karthik

Hello All,
I would like to have my profile evaluated. I just took the GMAT in June and am ready to apply for business school in Fall 2019. Here is my information:
GMAT: 710 (50Q/34V/6 IR) Have not received my AWA score yet
GPA: ~ 3.37 (over a 3.5 my last year)
Degree: BA Economics, UCLA. Transfer GPA - 3.8
Experience: 2 years as an analyst at a real estate investment company(1 year at current firm). Work in both acquisitions (acquired 3 hotels for $150mm since I started) and asset management (6 of our current hotels, and 135 hotels for a third party). Had previous internship experience in PWM.
Extracurricular: Over 700 hours working as a volunteer at the local hospital, as a tutor, and as a coach for middle school children. No experience in professional leadership/managerial roles. Was a member of Ski and Snowboard team in college. Mentor a student at UCLA. High School Valedictorian.
Background: Indian (born and raised in California). 25 years old. Typical middle class story for a kid in Orange County.
What I want from business school: First, I would like to work in finance, either in real estate acquisitions, PWM, or VC/PE. I would like to gain both the professional and personal skills that business school can provide. Finally, I need a change in my life.
Letters of Rec: Plan on asking my CIO and an Associate at my current company for my two recommendations. I also have my previous employer in case. Do not have a professor at UCLA I can ask since I did not spend a lot of time in office hours.
Other: The one issue which will make things difficult is that I was accused of cheating in college. I received academic probation and I'm sure I will have to discuss what happened. I would like some feedback whether this is a automatic red flag. It was a mistake and I've grown from it, but I am sure it will leave a mark.

Thank You,

Hello! Potential applicant here.

I've already been accepted to the Public Affairs graduate program at UT so I'm applying for a dual.

GPA: 3.5 at UCLA, Major: International Relations
GMAT: 700 (47Q, 40V) No official AWA score yet
Work Experience: Close to five years working in the insurance industry. Started as a service specialist but then made my way up into underwriting (evaluating business risk and pricing premiums for risk transfer policies). I'm at a new job right now where I've only been for 6 months, so I'm going to ask my previous direct manager with whom I reported to for a year and a half.
Leadership Experience: I've been a tutor on the side for high school kids for a few years. Have done a few mentorship programs as well. In my previous role I was also the Community Investment Chair, so I was responsible for organizing community outreach and fundraising at my company (F500 insurer). I also had a short internship stint at a local chamber of commerce here in Austin focusing on international student outreach.

What I Want to Get Out of an MBA: To be honest I"m still working on streamlining this goal. I know I want to work around where the private and public sectors intersect, perhaps in corporate social responsibility or regulatory affairs. I have a health care policy research background and insurance experience so ideally work in the health/insurance/tech arena. Looking into McComb's Social Innovation Initiative and the Business, Government and Society focus.

Your dual degree course should give you some direction- both these programs should complement your post MS-MBA career.

KDabrowski23 your stats are OK, and I do think the community involvement will help you, however you really REALLY need to pin down your positioning/narrative/goals. Especially because the main essay requires you to "think from the end." McCombs is not known for finance or international shizz and so it's important to demonstrate fit. Also, given that UT is such a huge campus, the admissions director has mentioned that students should be clear on their ambitions or else they might get swallowed up. Do some informational interviews for potential post-MBA job titles; might also consider taking CareerLeader, which is required of all b-school students in the zero period, might provide some insights.

Hello all,
I would like to have my profile evaluated.
Here is my information:
Background: Vietnamese Female, 26 years old
GMAT: 710 (50Q/37V/6 IR) Have not received my AWA score yet
GPA: ~ 8.7/10 (vietnamese scale) - top university in my country
Degree: BA in Finance (course provided in English)
Hope for being an ACCA member (Charted Certified Accountant, kind of CPA in UK) - 3 more course to go in 1 years.

Working experience: 3 years now but I intend to apply for 2020 => 4 years at the time of application. The weak point is that I changed companies a lot (but the roles have been consistent and relevant - in my opinion) and have experienced no leader position.
1 year in the biggest company in Vietnam (an FDI manufacturing company) in management accounting and finance team => tasks focused mainly in costing and controlling technical issues (system: SAPS) . I want to do more analytical and management tasks => moved to a local company to work in financial planning and analyzing role (FP&A) (corporate prospective, not investment and banking). After working here 1 year, I found a chance to move to current company - bigger, leading Japanese firm in sector (sanitary & health care products) with the same role.

Extracurricular:
1. After university : literally none, working on that
2. University:
Runner-up in CFA research challenge for students (as a team)
Finalist in CMA business challenge (team leader)
Organizer in English club for 2 years (biggest role: mentor/supervisor)
Volunteers in some cultural events.

Post MBA: Stiil want to work in Corporate Finance, FP&A to be specific. FP&A requires more strategic view and knowledge about operation and marketing as well=> an MBA help me to improve that. But I am open for a strategic consultant role.

Actually, I wished to apply for this year but I acknowledge that My profile details lack a lot of elements, especially show no potential for leadership so I decided to take one more year to improve. Hope that you guys can give me advice. Is McCombs a stretch ?

Hi,
I haven't given my GMAT yet. I will give it by the end of this month. Based on my mocks the score is 650. I have 4 years of experience (2 years in IT - Oracle- and 2 years in a small ad agency as a project/account manager where my top clients were MNCs). Already have an MBA from an Indian B-school (b- Level) where I scored 75/100. The reason to do another MBA is vertical growth in the marketing field and global exposure/working and studying with people from diverse backgrounds, thereby networking. This is something I did not find the first time around.

Hi

Please evaluate my profile

Age:28
Gender: Female
Nationality: Nigerian (West Africa)

Education: Master of Pharmacy.....MPharm(honors)
GPA: 3.04 (according to WES)
GMAT: no taken yet but test is scheduled for next week
Other education: I have taken some free courses online purely out of interest: Financial trading, Leadership and management (‘ the Shaw academy’ . I don’t know if they will consider that)

Work experience: 4.5 years. As a pharmacist, worked a year for a multinational pharma company as a medical sales representative. I’m a pharmacy intern now in the US

My pharmacy degree was obtained from the United Kingdom and I moved back to Nigeria after working a year in London.

I am a registered pharmacist in the UK and Nigeria after sitting the Nigerian Pharmacy equivalent exam

I moved to the United States 2 years ago and have been working towards being a registered pharmacist here. As a matter of fact, I sit my boards in a couple of weeks. So my most recent position are Pharmacy technician and Intern position. Those are part of the United state requirements in order to be eligible to sit the boards.

Back in Nigeria, I attempted to pioneer a system by which pharmacy medications would be dispensed in the orange vial bottles that are used in pharmacies in the United States with child resistant caps and appropriate printing labels. This was to prevent the numerous child deaths caused my medication poisoning. And to also prevent medication degradation by harsh sun light. I was trying to help solve one of the issues with medication in Nigeria including the existence of counterfeit medication. Unfortunately I was not successful, I had so much to learn including networking, selling yourself and the general business accumen.

When the Ebola virus struck West Africa, it made its way to the hospital I worked in. Luckily I wasn’t quarantined or anything. But I led a team in providing infrared thermometers, hospital supplies, sanitizers etc to very rural areas who had no way or access to information as people who did in the big cities of Nigeria. Till today it is still used and they do get the odd training and checks to make sure everything is okay. That was the what peaked my interest in operations and strategy of a health care system as I literally saw a country fall apart during this period. I want to be in a position where I am providing healthcare solutions

When it comes to extra curricular:
I am active in the church, I organized many medical outreach programs in both cities and rural areas to help people who could not afford healthcare. I have a passion for health equity.
I currently sponsor a child in Uganda
I was a student telephone fundraiser and raised about £1000 towards University research and whatever the alumni was passionate about.
Public Relations Officer of the African Caribbean Society ( this was in college)

My post MBA goal would be to work in a Leadership Development Program for a company that provides healthcare solutions be it health tech or health insurance such as GE healthcare, Samsung healthcare or Cigna.

Annual donations to American cancer society and ellevest ( an investment platform for Women in business targeted to bridge gender investment gap)

Please let me know your thoughts....

Assistant Coach/GM for that team for 4 years post-graduation

Undergrad school/major: a public ivy
Business Administration
Second Major: Exercise and Sport Science (Sport Administration)
Other education/coursework: Completed my college's business certificate program (while I was still in UG though)
Race/nationality: White
Sex: Male

Stats

Scores:
GRE: 159 V, 160 Q
GMAT #1: 670 (Q39, V42)
GMAT #2: 690 (Q46, V38)
GMAT #3: 720 (Q48, V40)

Undergrad GPA: 3.25

MBA Info

Goal of MBA: Change/Elevate Career. Learned relatively quickly into full-time employment that working in sports was not for me. I finally landed a job analyzing real estate about a year ago, and while it is still a significant improvement from working in sports and bank operations, I still feel under-utilized and behind my peers in the industry. I want to make a change, and I feel this is the best way to go about breaking into a more quant-intensive real estate role, either within the front office of a bank's securitized products group or at a smaller, more individual-deal-focused firm.

Thoughts? What are my chances? Happy to provide any additional info!

Hi abhinav918-
How did your GMAT wind up? Did you submit for R2? Keep us posted if you would like some additional profile feedback.... if you haven't applied now I would suggest perhaps another year of work and leadership experience would be beneficial... but don't want to get too deep with the review if you've already applied... keep us posted!

Hi Everyone,

Can somebody please tell me what is the conversion rate from interview to admit? I interviewed today and I think it went very well, and I feel quite positive. Problem is I have another deposit deadline coming up on March 6th from another school, and McCombs will not get back until March 28th! I will certainly prefer McCombs.

Any thoughts/advice is/are appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi there,
It varies a lot by year, round, etc, but it's not uncommon for it to be about a 50% conversion rate at McCombs..... tough to say of course as it's still a holistic process, the interview isn't everything... good luck!

Hi Jen, thank you for your response. I applied in R2 and 50% rate sounds like a lot of risk. I really need to think hard whether the risk is worth it or I should just accept the offer from other school.

Yes, McCombs specifically mentions that they wont be able to accommodate requests for early decisions.

Thank you.

Hello gmatenthureturns,

This is a very subjective question and the decision could go either way! :-)

We do, however, suggest that you write to Mc Combs towards the end of February, humbly requesting the school for an early decision; clearly specifying that McCombs is your first choice but you have to make a deposit for another school. At the same time, we also suggest that you seek a slight extension from the school, where your deposit is due. Do not specify a timeline but ask them for as much time as they feel comfortable providing you with.

We do hope that the above strategies will help ease things out for you.

Good Luck! :-)

Hi there,
It certainly varies and chances could be higher but instead of trying to figure out and 'play the odds' to so speak, I would suggest:

a) really assess which school is a better fit for you and HOW MUCH better is it vs the other school
b) consider the investment for the deposit... many clients have in the past gone ahead with deposit to school A knowing if they get in to school B they lose that investment but that it will be worth it in the long-run (and potentially even with salaries/opportunities from a more competitive program)
c) consider asking for an extension from the school with the deposit deadline sooner; no guarantees but does not hurt to ask.

Hi there,
It varies a lot by year, round, etc, but it's not uncommon for it to be about a 50% conversion rate at McCombs..... tough to say of course as it's still a holistic process, the interview isn't everything... good luck!

Hi Jen, thank you for your response. I applied in R2 and 50% rate sounds like a lot of risk. I really need to think hard whether the risk is worth it or I should just accept the offer from other school.

Round 3 Applicant - 700 GMAT, 7.5 years experience in energy  [#permalink]

Hi All

I have a couple of questions and will really appreciate your feedback

Q1. Is my profile good enough ?

I recently gave GMAT and scored 700 (Quant 47 and Verbal 39). I have a bachelor of science degree in Chemical Engineering (graduated in first division with distinction) and a Master of science degree in Petroleum Engineering from Texas A&M Univ. (College Station) (GPA - 3.5). I worked in Evalueserve for 1.5 years in intellectual property rights consulting, worked for Schlumberger in multiple roles for about 5.5 years (field engineer + technical consulting) and I am currently working for Marathon Oil Corp. in Houston as a reservoir engineer.

I have performed fairly well in the schools in past and have won multiple awards. I have also published about 13 technical papers and have more than 150 citations. I want to pursue an MBA with the goal of gaining knowledge of finance in particular, and maybe make a career in energy investment banking, consulting or continue in mainstream oil and gas business.

Q2. Should I apply in round 3 (2019) or round 1 (2020) ?

Is it ok to apply in round 3, or the chances of getting in will be better if I wait and apply in round 1 next year

Regards
KG
