Hi all,
My name is Mert, from Istanbul, Turkey. I graduated from architecture but I want to be a consultant as a career goal. This is why I want to apply to MiM programs.
University: I graduated from Istanbul Tech. University with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture GPA: 3.43/4.00. ( it is a highly selective public school and the best school in architecture in Turkey)
I also had an exchange year in paris, france.
GMAT: I will take it in two weeks. I aim to get at least 700. the more, the merrier
Toefl: 104 ( 27,28,24,25)
Work Experience: Previously I have internship experience in an architecture and engineering firm based in Turkey but mainly operated globally. ( 3 months)
I also interned at an archaeological excavation ( 2 months)
For the past 3 years, I have also been teaching language to foreigners in tech company.
Extra-curricular: I have many extracurricular activities. I have been a volunteer Ambassador to a Forum, being the only Turkish representative. I have also been participating in this forum for the past 3 years. Also I have mentored a group of first time scholarship holders there.
I also work as a volunteer junior editor in an online architectural and urbanism publication platform based in the NL.
I speak English, French, Turkish and some other languages at basic and int. level (norwegian and japanese) So one of my best skills is language ability.
Community: I volunteered in a library dedicated to only women’s work
I also co-founded my uni’s lgbtq+ club.
Represented my school to NAAB accreditation committee
My aim is to get offers at least one from LBS, LSE, HEC, Bocconi, RSM, TUM, IE
I want to work as a consultant afterwards, understanding the basics of management which I lack and kind of be a unique combination with my background and with elective courses.
I’d appreciate it if you can drop me any insight or advice. Or maybe other universities that are more suitable for my profile. I would like to have some insights on how I can better show my profile considering my background in architecture. Because I am afraid that my background is going to be an obstacle ( I haven't seen so many arch grads studying at those schools now)
Hi
pilgrimanager,
From the first glance itself, your profile looks well-groomed. To begin with, your undergraduate background in architecture is more of an asset to you as it differentiates you from the crowd and helps you add diversity to the cohort which is what every school is looking to breed. In addition to this, your GPA is pretty competitive and allows you to target every top MiM program worldwide. Here you have mentioned that you are aiming for a 700 in your GMAT however, taking into consideration your preferred schools especially HEC, you need to aim for at least a 710 in your GMAT.
Another interesting addition to your profile is your international experience in the form of a one year exchange program to Paris which goes on to showcase your broadened perspective and adaptability quotient, traits held in high regard by top b-schools.
Your extracurriculars further vouches for the varied skills you have got under your belt which will definitely work in your favour. Looking at the details you have provided about your extracurriculars, you have been constantly upgrading yourself by going above and beyond in your endeavours. From volunteering and mentorship works to spearheading an LGBTQ+ community in your college, you have been involved in all the right causes through which you can highlight your interpersonal skills.
When talking about your work experience, you have got an extensive amount of exposure in the professional setup. However, since you are applying for a management degree, it would be better if you can highlight any experience in the managerial position to stay relevant to the program. Having said that, you can also highlight the projects you handled, skills you’ve gained and your major takeaways to stand at par with the competition you face.
Now coming to the schools that you are targeting, HEC, LBS, LSE fall under the dream category(where your chances of acceptance is 40-50%), while Bocconi, RSM, TUM, and IE can be clubbed under the competitive category(where your chances of acceptance is 60%). On this note, to hedge your bets wisely, you can also look at some other great schools such as ESSEC, ESCP, FSFM, ESMT, and ESADE.
All things considered, you can further boost your chances of acceptance by presenting a very strong application that will help you differentiate yourself from the applicant pool. Your application would highlight your profile USP’s and overshadow any particular weaknesses in your profile. Since you are concerned about your undergraduate background in architecture, your application would be the main tool through which you can represent it as an asset. Moreover, you need to ensure that your LORs and Resume, equally depict the strengths of your profile.
