I applied to Stanford apart from MIT LGO, they have a 3 year MS/MBA program too. How much work experience do you guys have around here?

I applied to MIT-LGO and Ross.
Tauber institute at Ross has a decent operations focused program but of-course there's no other program like LGO.

How much work experience do you guys have around here?

I have just under 6 years of work experience.

3 years of experience

Exactly 2 years post graduate. All through undergrad I did work in my field. Including 2 internships. One of them sent me overseas. That question kills me, because if it was work experience in general it would be closer to 5.

And LGO is my only school. I really value the engineering degree coupled with the MBA.

"This question kills me."

I stand in the same boat. I have less than one year post grad experience at the time of application, but I took a break before my senior year to work for 3 years. I just didn't take my degree. And LGO asked a very specific question of how many months of experience I have since I took my degree. It seemed really annoying especially when MIT is one school that makes a huge deal on the importance of internships and application of what you learn in class in the industry. I really hope they at least give me a chance to interview as that is where I could address these things.

While its not my only school, why do you think its a risky theme? LGO is one of the best programs and many people are just keen on going there and no where else. I myself feel like LGO is the best fit for me and I can totally understand why many people only applied there (given Stanford's dual degree program is not so known or well planned as LGO)

I did explain it in the optional information text box. But I don't remember seeing any special circumstances text box. What I am more worried about is if they care enough about my explanation. We find out Monday.. or Tuesday..

Did you speak with the LGO staff before applying? I visited over the summer, they reviewed my resume, and we had a really nice chat about which engineering department would best match my goals. I am sure they would have helped you address that issue in your application, as well as allow you to give a heads up before you send the application. Also paired my with a student which was great for those same questions I posed the LGO staff.

Understanding this is not useful now if you didn't, but when people read this in the future it might help someone.

Overall, when it comes to work experience quality matters much more than quantity. I've been told this multiple times by program directors, students, faculty etc.

I did speak with someone about this before applying. I was asked to explain it in that particular optional essay. I know at this point what my application lacks and I would definitely fill in the gaps if I am interviewed. The way I wrote my application was that technically I have less than a year of work experience after taking my degree but everything I did in the three years of break was amazing. I explained everything well and yes, from between quantity and quality, I have the quality part nailed but its always better to have both on your side.

That is true, but the fallacy is thinking that someone with the quantity lacks quality.

Highly motivated people don't work hard for 2 years and cruise for the next 3. They show continued excellence over 4, 5, 6 years. All things equal, a highly motivated individual with 5 years of experience will have more to contribute than another highly motivated person with 2 years.

But I think the real hurdle will be that someone with 2 years is going to have a hard time finding a job post MBA. Most general/operations management position require 5 years or more pre MBA experience.

It's a balance, and I certainly expect the admissions committee to consider both quality and quantity of work experience when evaluating applications.

It's also worth considering that most top MBA programs are actually trending younger these days, partially due to post-MBA employers wanting to hire their grads earlier in their careers (and hopefully retain them longer). So, all things being equal, an applicant with more years of experience may not always have the advantage...

I just hope I get a shot at an interview this year. I didn't last year, and had 1 year post graduate experience. From what I've heard, the least amount of work experience they've accepted was 2 years. So I'm hoping that I get an interview this year.
