That is true, but the fallacy is thinking that someone with the quantity lacks quality.

Highly motivated people don't work hard for 2 years and cruise for the next 3. They show continued excellence over 4, 5, 6 years. All things equal, a highly motivated individual with 5 years of experience will have more to contribute than another highly motivated person with 2 years.

But I think the real hurdle will be that someone with 2 years is going to have a hard time finding a job post MBA. Most general/operations management position require 5 years or more pre MBA experience.

It's a balance, and I certainly expect the admissions committee to consider both quality and quantity of work experience when evaluating applications.

It's also worth considering that most top MBA programs are actually trending younger these days, partially due to post-MBA employers wanting to hire their grads earlier in their careers (and hopefully retain them longer). So, all things being equal, an applicant with more years of experience may not always have the advantage...

The average age at top MBA programs is around 27-28. If you graduate at 22 or 23, that's still 4 to 6 years of experience. The average experience at LGO is 5.5. It makes sense since most engineers don't get leadership opportunity 1 year out of undergrad.

The students who are getting into top programs with 2 years of experience are coming from extremely prestige backgrounds, usually H/Y/P with nose bleed stats followed by MBB or top PE experience. They are not engineers.

What engineering program did you all apply for?

That was one year post graduate right? Did you have any long term internships prior to that? I am scared that Work Experience will be my undoing..

As far as LGO, I found a mix of work experience both times I visited campus. Several students I spoke with actually came from engineering jobs and had 2-4 years of experience. Others came from non-engineering jobs and had 4+ years of experience.

My impression is that the admissions committee evaluates candidates in a much more holistic way than we might think. If you fit within LGO, you fit within LGO. The number of years you've worked will not, by itself, make the difference.

I don't know if I have nose bleed stats but I was hired into a manager level position for a bay area Tech Company straight out of graduation. In the 3 years post graduating I did several 6-8 month projects with several tech giants and ended with a full-time offer from each of them. So I believe they should count that experience.

I dont get if the 5.5 years is all post bachelors experience or not. MFin clearly states experience with and without internships. LGO does not..

If accepted to LGO, I'll have a little less than 4 years experience since graduation (in a primarily engineering/project management type roll) when the program starts. I did chemical engineering as an undergrad but applied for the MechE track because I want to focus more on manufacturing controls rather than biotech.

Yes. 1 year post graduate.

I graduated valedictorian of my undergrad class. I had full time jobs during my undergrad. My one internship I was overseas for 2 months.

I applied for the Supply Chain emphasis. I thought about MechE, but decided I wanted to go a different direction.

It sure did explode. I guess we are all nervous for Tuesday. ADC4 and I just have different perspectives of admissions. Neither of us are in the inside circle, so arguing about is moot I guess. Good luck all on Tuesday!

Well Mr Sandoo, I sure like the points made by both of you but for my own sake I'd hope ADC4 is correct. Yet we shall find out on Tuesday. Maybe both of you are right.

Thank you and good luck to everyone! I'm guessing that the invites are probably being released on a rolling basis until (or even after) Jan 10.

Hey congratulations on your interview. I find myself in your shoes from last year today. What time EST did you get it? What does the email say? Also, any coping tips?

Ya, apparently second time is the charm! Hoping I can nail this interview and get accepted! I'm in disbelief!

My email says 8:01 MST. Got it this morning, January 8th.

Last year I just kept hoping I would get an interview into February. It was hard to not hear anything, but like others have said, you're not out until March 1st. Last year was also my first year applying to grad school, and this year I learned a lot more of what I could improve on. Don't beat yourself up, and just try again next year if things don't work out!
