Hey jdloma,

You seem ambitious about pursuing a career in finance - This is reflected in the effort you have put in your work experience. If this aspect is portrayed properly in your application, schools will be interested in this.

As far as the profile is concerned, your undergraduate college being one of the top 5 in the country works in your favor as schools tend to pick applicants hailing from top universities of their country, however, your GPA is slightly on the lower end, but posing the right alibi for the same would allow you to overcome this drawback in your profile. While your grades do play an important part, your extracurricular activities and your other endeavors matter as well because AdComs are looking for applicants with holistically developed profiles.

On this note, you have a lot of accolades for competitions in the field of finance which all showcase your strong interest in finance and how you have been taking that forward. The skills and experience gained since your college can act as a differentiating point in your profile. Though to be clear, Adcoms are more interested in impact created rather than participation, hence adding quantifiable achievements would help enhance your application.

Coming to your teaching and volunteering roles, it most certainly showcases your strong interest in developing your profile holistically, your ability to take on initiatives, empathize with people, and create impacts. B-schools are looking for applicants that are future leaders and such experiences and qualities strengthen your application.

Moreover, the summer school during your undergraduate study will certainly add to your international experience and it would definitely enhance your application further as it portrays your ability to adapt and the possession of a broadened perspective.

As for your GMAT while your overall score is great but looking at your GMAT score breakup, your Quant is slightly on the lower end and for finance courses it is one of the referencing points, thus to cover it up make sure you properly highlight the internships and the extracurricular related to finance during your undergraduate.

As for your work experience, you have a few good brands on your CV which definitely works in your favor. You have relevant experience in the field of finance which is great and most certainly would strengthen your profile as Adcoms are looking for applicants who’ve had relevant experience in finance. While this brings you to par with your competition, you ought to explain and highlight the major projects of your work and how these experiences helped to develop and further groom your finance skills and knowledge. Highlight why you chose these firms, how you have gone beyond the role, any initiatives you took, and any kind of impact created to establish a connection with your goals and portray the knowledge gained from these experiences.

To further improve your profile you could take up certifications like CFA or FRM, which would show your passion for the field of finance.

All the schools you are targeting Oxford, LBS, and LSE come under the dream category. Dream schools have a very stringent acceptance rate of 12-15%. Hence, it is always better to target a mix of dream, competitive, and safe schools. Looking at your profile you have a 50% chance of getting admitted to the schools in the dream category and a 70% chance of getting admitted to the schools in the competitive category.

Apart from your targeted list Imperial, Cass and Warwick are some other schools in the Competitive category that you can target.

While you have a competitive profile, to increase your chances of getting admitted at these schools you would need to ensure that you have a very strong application (consisting of - Essays, LORs, and Resume) to back your profile. You need to showcase your journey, what makes you different from your peers, and how you are a great value addition to the school. A strong application increases your chances of acceptance by up to 30%.

Moreover, applying during Round 1 would give you a higher chance of securing an admit and allow you to secure scholarships too. That said, you should start preparing your applications to these schools since round one deadlines are just around the corner and each application takes 10-15 days to be perfected. On this note, if you are looking to target the top B-schools and want to prepare a strong application to meet the Round 1 deadlines right on time, you can check our comprehensive all in one solution that has helped thousands of applicants get into their dream schools including schools like HEC, LSE and LBS!

Hey alchya,

You have a pretty holistic profile.

Your academic background is excellent. A 4/4 GPA highlights your academic prowess and opens the door to most of the top business schools in the world. Moreover, It’s great to see that you have some international experience as well that you gained from the exchange program. International exposure is a highly sought after trait from business schools as it showcases your broadened perspective and ability to adapt and work well in foreign environments.

Your scholarships authenticate your academic credentials by showing a consistent scholarly record and thereby strengthen your profile.

However, while this is just half the battle won, schools are most certainly on the lookout for students who have a holistically developed prof

As for your extracurricular participation, when applying to a business master’s program the activities from undergraduate and above are generally considered by the admission committee, so please be mindful of that and dig deeper into the most recent activities that could highlight varied traits in your profile.

That said, judging from the details presented, you have a decent mix of volunteering, leadership, and team activities. All of these would strengthen your profile by portraying the possession of varied skills and project management abilities. Moreover, the impact you created in these roles would help to set you apart from the competition.

On the other hand, you also have extensive work experience that includes both entrepreneurial and leadership roles. Your startups are a great way to showcase your entrepreneurial skills and team-building capabilities. It sets you apart by showing by highlighting your risk-taking and well-rounded attributes.

While you have decent work ex so far, it must be noted that as you are targeting an MF program, having relevant work experience would strengthen your profile. Thus, make sure you bring to life the exposure to finance whilst talking about the roles and responsibilities you took, the major learning takeaways from your stints, and how you went above and beyond to bloom in these roles.

Given your school choice, all of them fall into the dream category, meaning these schools have a very stringent acceptance rate of 8-15%. That said, while your quant score works in your favor, you’d require an overall GMAT score of at least 710 to be able to target these schools.

On this note, an important strategy you must follow while applying for business schools is to target a mix of schools from the dream, competitive, and safe category.

Given your strong profile, you can target competitive schools such as ESCP, DUKE, Washington University, Brandies, ESSEC, Mannheim, and Imperial College.

Lastly, as you have a pretty holistically developed profile, you’d need to complement it with a strong application. A strong application holds 30% of weightage in the entire admission process and as you would be competing with other candidates with similar strong profiles, it becomes imperative that you craft an application that successfully highlights not only your caliber but also your potential to add value to the school.

As major chances of your admission depend on the quality of your application, inclusive of documents like your essays, resume, and LORs, I would suggest you book a FREE consultation call with our experienced consultants to strategize and build the perfect course of action for your application.

Hello everyone. I am thinking about applying for Vanderbilt MSF program, and would like your honest opinions about my profile. Just to give you a bit of context, I am currently a senior Business student in my country. The huge issue with me is that my institution isn't ranked very well in Business, though it has a very recognizable name in Medicine and other stuff. I want to break into Asset Management, Private Equity or Equity Research.
GPA: 3.3 (kinda problematic I know, but I scored either A or B in all relevant courses)
GMAT: aiming for a 700-710 hopefully
expired TOEFL: 110. 130 in the new Duolingo test.
CFA L1 candidate. I'm also planning on taking L2&3 after L1.
I had only one internship at a commercial bank. I was supposed to get an internship this past summer at a top consulting firm but it was cancelled, though I must note that I fought so hard to get it.

Do I stand a chance with this profile? I'm also considering MIT Master's in Finance.
Thank you all.

Hi, would really appreciate some feedback on my profile. I'm planning to apply for MS Finance in US business schools for Fall 2021 intake.

Demographic: 27 yo/ Female/ Singapore
My GMAT score is just average 650 (Q45/V34). I'm worried about my weak GMAT score and have taken twice (was not able to improve).

GPA is around 3.28/4.

However I do have 4 years of working experience in various specialised fields in Finance.
- 1.5 years in Audit in a Big 4 Accounting Firm. worked on audit engagements across various industries, manufacturing, F&B, shipping etc
- 1 year in FP&A in a fast-expanding regional e-commerce company. was promoted once to senior finance associate. main roles were financial reporting, special projects, budgeting
- Current ~ 1.5 years in Credit Risk Analysis/Underwriting in a US FinTech MNC.

I also have a Chartered Accountant Certificate in Singapore and graduated with double degrees in Accountancy and Business Management (Finance).

Some extracurriculars in school were:
A certified trainer for financial literacy programme to teach less fortunate youth. Involved in organising and participating in several community service projects such as helping less privileged children, was a member of AIESEC club. Also played in high school competitive sports team such as hockey, softball.

Post grad plan is to work in US in corporate finance (FP&A, strategic finance etc) to gain more experience so would prefer schools with good international student placements.

My target schools are Fordham, University of Rochester, Purdue, Ohio State Fisher College, University of Maryland, Syracuse, Babson, Brandeis etc. Please let me know my chances of getting in these schools or what are the safe schools I can target. Thanks very much for any advice!

Hey guys. Would be great to hear your views on my chances for the schools I'm aiming for. Thank you!

Background and nationality: 20 year old, Italian
Programs: Said MFE, LBS MFA, LSE MFin, HEC MIF, Bocconi MFin. Will be applying to Jan deadlines
Undergrad Information: Studying law at top 5 UK uni, expecting mid 2:1. Also, the professional body I am registered with to become a chartered accountant (see additional info below) offers its students the opportunity to get a degree from Oxford Brookes University in Applied Accounting upon completion of certain exams. Not sure how much weight this carries over and above the chartered accountant qualification though.
GMAT: based on diagnostics am expecting/hoping 750+, will be taking exam in December. I think I might just be able to hit a q50 if I prep enough.
Work experience: have only had two internships at corporate law firms, nothing in finance
ECs: virtually nothing of note, I only play some sports recreationally... will do anything to improve this part of my profile by jan so any recommendations are welcome!
Additional info: I am also studying to become a Chartered Accountant (ACCA) alongside university and have completed various modules related to financial reporting and financial management with relatively high scores. In addition to English, I speak Italian, French and Hindi. Not sure how much languages matter though.

I'm basically pretty worried about my lack of work experience. Even though the programs I'm applying to are pre-experience, it seems that a lot of my peers have substantial work experience in this area. I am also worried about my weak ECs section.

Would really appreciate any advice on how to improve my profile. Please be brutally honest - thanks again!

Hey dv09,

You seem ambitious about pursuing a career in finance. If you properly portray your passion for
finance in your application, schools will be interested in this.

As far as the profile is concerned, your academic background in the field of law will act as a differentiator amongst the crowd and set you apart from most of your competition. Moreover, your undergraduate college being one of the top 5 in the country, works in your favor as schools tend to pick applicants hailing from top universities of their country, however, your GPA is slightly on the lower end, but posing the right alibi for the same would allow you to overcome this drawback in your profile. While your grades do play an important part, your extracurricular activities and your other endeavors matter as well because AdComs are looking for applicants with holistically developed profiles. That said, your second undergraduate from Oxford Brooks would certainly add to your profile and showcases your transition from law towards the field of Finance.

As far as the GMAT goes, an overall score of 750 with a score of 49 or more in the Quant section, would allow you to target the Finance programs at most of the top B-schools. You should definitely aim to score as high as you can since a strong GMAT score would bolster the AdComs confidence in your academic abilities and improve your acceptance chances.

Next, I’d like to let you know that Extracurricular participation plays an important role in strengthening your applications as B-schools are on the hunt for all-rounder profiles. Thus, you could manage or participate in some endeavors at any clubs, associations, sports, fest, or events during your undergrad. Internships, Certifications, and volunteering initiatives undertaken during the course of your study would also count towards your extracurricular initiatives. You could take up certifications like CFA or FRM to showcase your interest in the field of finance. Also showcasing any volunteering or CSR activities that you participated in during your work experience would highlight your application. If you do not have any yet you should definitely work with a social initiative or an NGO as it would showcase your social initiative and your drive to give back to society.

As far as your internship experience goes, you should try to secure an internship with the big companies in the field of finance, since schools do look for applicants who have prior experience in the field of finance. Even though these are pre-experience programs, you would be competing against
applicants having a relevant internship in the field of finance from one of the big four companies, thus having relevant experience from a finance firm would help bolster your profile.

All the schools you are targeting Said, LBS, LSE, HEC, and Bocconi come under the dream category.

Dream schools have a very stringent acceptance rate of 12-15%. Hence, it is always better to target a mix of dream, competitive, and safe schools, in order to hedge your bets wisely. Having evaluated your profile, I’d say you have a 50% chance of getting admitted to the schools in the dream category and a 70% chance of getting admitted to the schools in the competitive category.

To help you understand better, I’ve suggested a few competitive and safe schools that you
could be targeting.

Competitive: ESSEC, FSFM, IE, ESCP
Safe: EDHEC, IESE, SKEMA, Grenoble

Since you have a different background and profile, to increase your chances of getting admitted at
these schools you would need to ensure that you have a very strong application (consisting of -
Essays, LORs, and Resume) to back your profile. You need to showcase your journey, what makes
you different from your peers, and how you are a great value addition to the school. A strong
application increases your chances of acceptance by upto 30%.

On this note, if you are looking to target the top B-schools and want to prepare a strong application
that would increase your chances by at least 3 times, you can check our comprehensive all in one

HEC, INSEAD, and LBS!

Hi guys !

I'm applying to a few schools for a Master in Finance and I was hoping I could get an idea of what my chances are

Schools: ESSEC, Bocconi, LSE, maybe skema and edhec

- 24 year old brazilian girl with an industrial engineering degree. Graduated in july 2020 from one of the top schools in the country.
- CGPA: 8.2/10.0

- Also, how hard do you think it is to get employed in London as a non EU? This is what im worrying about if i dont go to a UK bs

Thanks in advance!

I would also appreciate it if you have any advice on which programs will be best to apply to.

Thank you guys so much! I appreciate the help!

Hi everyone

I am looking to apply for masters in finance program. I currently work as a equity quant analyst at one of the big banks. I will have a work experience of 2 years by the time I join the program next year.

Background:
23 year old indian engineer.

Undergrad: 8.22/10 CGPA from IIT, a top 3 engineering college in India.

GMAT: 700 ( Q51, V34) I plan to give another attempt later in November.

Apart from my current work experience of 1 year as quant analyst which is a heavily quant driven role involving stochastic calculus and programming, I have internships and project related to equity research and derivatives respectively.

Extracurricular: 4 month volunteering experience for UN event in Russia. I have been a part of sports team and won a few college level competitions.
Part of an NGO which provides home and care for stray dogs and other animals.

Programs that I am targeting:
Mfin at MIT sloan, LSE, Oxford, HEC. I am open to suggestions for more schools which might be worth trying based on my profile.

What do you think about my profile in general? Where do I need to improve so that I have a solid application? Do I need to give GMAT again, or my heavily quant driven background can help me out ( though I got 51 in GMAT quant, it is the verbal section where I am stuck unable to cross the V35 barrier)

Please provide any suggestions or feedback.

Thanks.

Hello. I am considering an accounting master's program (MACC) in the United States. Please evaluate my profile and recommend any accounting master's programs that I can apply.

Background and nationality: South Korean

Undergrad Information: Business Administration at Sungkyunkwan University

GMAT: 650

GPA: 3.71 /4.5

Work experience: 6 month marketing internship at JW Marriott Seoul

Extracurricular Experience:
- teaching assistant for international summer semester (Course Name: The Effect of Game Theory on International Relations)
- Volunteer protocol for 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics
- English translator for foreign public officials (organized in KDI School of Public Policy and Management)

Thank you in advance
Hey Yesul
You have a pretty good profile

Academically your undergraduate GPA showcases your academic prowess which coupled with your nationality will help differentiate you from the crowd. Most schools are looking to add diversity to their cohort and your background gives you a unique perspective which definitely provides a value addition to their program. While your grades do play an important part, your extracurricular activities and your other endeavours matter as well because AdComs are looking for applicants with holistically developed profiles. Thus, it is essential to shed light on the endeavours you’ve taken up at the clubs, associations, fest, and events you managed or participated in during your undergrad. Thus, you should dig deeper into this aspect and bring out varied skills in your profile.

For your extracurricular activities, you have a lot of varied roles in teaching, volunteering and as a translator which are impressive value additions. Highlighting how these roles have helped you grow and influenced your life would help portray a strong application.

As far as the GMAT goes, an overall score of 650 would give you a chance to target the MAAC programs at most of the schools. However, I would recommend you retake the GMAT and improve your score by 20-30 points since an overall score of 690 and above would allow you to easily target all the top schools and improve your acceptance chances.

As far as your internship experience goes, while the marketing role at JW Marriott is noteworthy, since you are applying for a specialized masters, you would be competing against applicants with relevant experience in the field of accounting from the big 4 firms. Hence, highlighting how you have gone beyond the role, any initiatives you took and any kind of impact created to establish a connection with your goals and portray the knowledge gained from these experiences would help you put forth a strong application pitch. Furthermore, you could also look towards securing an internship in accounting from one of the big 4 brands to make your profile more competitive.

Moving on, some of the top schools offering MAAC programs in the US that you can be targeting are:

-University of Pennsylvania
-Northwestern University
-University of Southern California
-Washington University in Saint Louis
-Vanderbilt University
-University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
-Rice University
-University of Notre Dame
-University of Rochester
-Emory University

Since you have a different background, with your current GMAT score, to increase your chances of getting admitted at these schools you would need to ensure that you have a very strong application (consisting of - Essays, LORs and Resume) to back your profile. You need to showcase your journey, what makes you different from your peers and how you are a great value addition to the school. A strong application increases your chances of acceptance by upto 30%.

Hey zzxs!

You have a pretty decent profile.

Starting off the evaluation with the strong suits of your profile, your academic background is pretty strong. Your GPA of 3.28/4 showcases your strong academic capabilities and your prowess as a scholar. Moreover, your undergraduate program of Accountancy and business management further highlights your inclinations towards finance.

You have pretty decent work experience as well. Moreover, you have relevant work experience in the different facets of the financial industry, something that would definitely be appreciated by the admission committee. You also have a brand name of a big4 associated with your profile which further authenticates your financial acumen and the quality of your work. Here I would advise you to draw focus towards the kind of projects you undertook, the teams you led, your major learning, takeaways, and the impact you created in those positions.

You have a fair share of extracurricular activities as well. The financial literacy programme highlights the extent of knowledge that you possess in the field while your contribution in the non-profit organization showcases the socially responsible side of your profile and highlights your leadership, communication and management skills.

Coming onto the biggest concern you have regarding your profile. Yes, your GMAT score falls on the shorter side. For applying to an Mfin programme, a score of 49 above in the quant section and an overall score of 690 and above is considered a good score. But if retaking isn’t an option for you, then I’d suggest you not to fret over the low GMAT score and instead build a strong application that draws the focus from the GMAT score to the financial acumen you have built through the various work experiences in major firms and companies.

Moreover, you can further take up a certification in finance such as FRM and CFA to showcase your passion for the field of finance and your academic prowess in it.

Given your school choices and your profile, Purdue, Brandies and Fordham fall into the upper competitive category and the remainder fall into the Dream category. For the upper competitive category, your GMAT does fall on the shorter side but for the competitive schools, you have a 60% chance of acceptance.

Your profile is pretty holistically developed. Hence, you require a strong application through which you can highlight your strengths and give apt justifications for your weaknesses to smooth over any flaws in your profile, i.e., would divert the attention from your low GMAT score to the strong highlights of your profile.

Moreover, I would advise you to apply in the first round of admissions as there is a significantly higher chance of getting admission in the first round due to lesser competition as all the seats are vacant. Applying in the first round itself along with a strong application would help you get into the program and also bag scholarships in the process.

As the first round of applications is just around the corner, I suggest you strategize the best course of action to help you get into the program. Hence, I’d recommend you to book a FREE consultation call, where our experts would help you chalk out the best strategy for your admission process that can boost your chances of acceptance by a minimum of 3x!

Hi ckt819,

On the first look itself, your profile seems decent with room for further improvements.
Speaking of your UG grades, while it falls under the average category, you easily overshadow this by justifying the reason behind the average GPA by diverting attention towards your inclination for extracurricular activities, volunteering activities, and gaining an overall practical experience. Mentioning your participation in extracurricular activities is equally important as it will showcase a holistically developed profile which is what the schools are looking for.

Speaking of extracurricular activities, you can enhance and add value to your profile by digging deeper into the various endeavors you undertook and how you went above and beyond to excel in the same. Here you have mentioned that you were an active member of the residential hall which can be taken up a notch by elaborating on the kind of events you organised, duties you performed and most importantly highlight what were your major takeaways. Similarly, you can also talk about how through sports you were able to imbibe various traits of leadership, teamwork and perseverance. Coming to your volunteering activities, you can try to showcase how you are socially responsible by presenting your ability to take initiatives and your empathy towards the underprivileged section of the society.
All in all, these skills can contribute towards you being a great future leader which would automatically impress the adcoms.

Along with extracurricular participation, you can also take up certifications like CFA or FRM, which again is relevant to the master’s field you are applying for while at the same time it will also aid in further building your profile. This will basically showcase your constant thirst for knowledge and growing your horizons.

Furthermore, you have mentioned that you had internship experiences at various companies with finance being a common factor among all which again works in your favour as the admission committee of these B-schools tend to favour applicants who have had experience in relevant fields. While these experiences are definitely praiseworthy, you will still be facing a lot of competition from applicants who have worked in big four companies like KPMG, EY, DELOITTE and PWC. To set yourself at par with your competitors, you can focus on highlighting the kind of projects you handled, the value you added to these projects, the skills you gained and the major takeaways you were able to attain throughout your internships.

Moreover, you have also mentioned that you had international experience in the form of a six month student exchange program at USA business school, which is always an added bonus as it’ll showcase your broadened perspective and your ability to adapt. Additionally, you have also mentioned how you are well versed in four different languages that undeniably, sits perfectly with your international exposure and your future pursuits in international locations.

Talking about your potential GMAT score, you should definitely aim for a 690+ as it will help you to target most of the top-notch B-schools while also showcasing your academic capabilities, thus making up for your average GPA.

Lastly, since you have posed your desire to either work in Hong Kong or relocate to Europe post your master’s, we suggest you to target a mix of dream, competitive and safe schools to ensure a fruitful outcome.

Under the dream category( 40% chances of acceptance) you can target schools such as LBC, LSE and HEC.
Under the competitive category( 60% chances of acceptance) you can target schools such as ESSEC, ESCP,FSFM, and ESADE.
Under the safe category( 70-80% chances of acceptance) you can target schools such as GRENOBLE, SKEMA and EDHEC.

All in all, you need to pay extra attention to your application which consists of your Essay, Lor and Resume as they carry 30% of an impact on your chances of bagging an admit. Having said that, since your concern lies around your low GPA, we suggest you to Book a Free consulting session with one of our consultants who will help you plan a winning strategy to overcome the particular weaknesses in your profile through tried and tested methods that have helped over hundreds of similar applicants win an admit from the top-ranked B-schools worldwide!

Guys, why Rochester and not Rutgers? Rochester is considered a better business school, but apparently Rutgers places more on Wall Street
