My doubt in causal reasoning is :

Does restating the cause of a causal reasoning in an answer choice strengthen/weaken the argument?
Does restating the effect of a causal reasoning in an answer choice strengthen/weaken the argument?

Eg:

If the stimulus is :

The ozone layer has depleted over the past 50 years. The population of amphibians has gone down in the past 50 years. Thus depletion of the ozone layer has caused the decline in the population of amphibians.

Answer choices-
1.The ozone layer has depleted over the past 50 years.
2.The population of amphibians has gone down in the past 50 years.

Does 1. strengthen/weaken the argument?
Does 2.strengthen/weaken the argument?

Hi pjagadish27.
I'm glad to help.

ABOUT STRENGTHEN/WEAKEN QUESTIONS

Technically, strengthen/weaken questions have the same logic, although they are different questions. Why? Let think:
- Why strengthen an argument? Because the argument is weak, you should clear a weaknesses ==> make the argument stronger
- Why weaken an argument? Because the argument is weak, you should find the weakness ==> show the argument is not as strong as it was stated.

In short, in strengthen/weaken questions, the conclusions have weaknesses (does not matter strengthen / weaken questions).

You say: "Restate the cause/ effect of an argument" does it help? I would say NO. Because you just repeat what the argument says, it does not help you strengthen / weaken the argument.

Let think "can you weaken other people's argument by restating what they say?" No, you cannot.

If you want to strengthen/weaken ==> Let find the weakness of the argument ==> Clear the weakness (Strengthen) or Attack the weakness (Weaken)

ABOUT CAUSE & EFFECT:

The popular form of cause and effect questions is:
Fact: A & B both exist
Conclusion: A cause B

How to strengthen ==> show B does not cause A ==> Can say A causes B.
How to weaken ==> show B causes A ==> cannot say A cause B.

YOUR EXAMPLE:

(1) & (2) don't help you strengthen/ weaken because they are the just facts in the argument.

Hope my short answer can help you.

option C restates the premise.
Strengthen questions ventures outside the scope of argument, introduces new idea...
Assumption id always within the scope of the argument..

For inference question the ans is restating the premise...
