Hi Nymeria26,

Here is my view on your profile:

1. About your Work: I would be interested to know if you got into the Investment Banking side of things. How good is your handle on financial knowledge, for example?  At the outset, it appears that your profile is likely to be on the IT side, though in the financial domain. If yes, then you would be benchmarked against other IT applicants.

2. You demonstrate potential for a good EC profile - though we will have to dig a bit deeper to see what stories of interest you have there.

All put together, I would expect that you will need a score in the 710 - 720 range as per the old GMAT.  About 675 or so.

Hi, hope this finds you well
Nymeria26
I might receive some criticism for saying this, but if you are new to B-School admissions, the first thing you must understand is that core IT profiles (Cognizant, TCS, Infosys, Wipro) are the most critiqued among all the segments that apply to top-tier B-Schools. I find it interesting that you worked directly on IB related projects, but how deeply you have understood the nuances of the technical roadmaps leading to an improved business outcome is crucial to demonstrate in your B-School applications.

Trust me when I say that if you are even remotely serious about IIM ABC or ISB, you should target a 700+. Anything less, and there will always be someone from these companies with a better score or slightly better work experience, potentially snatching the last seat from you. For other IIMs, a 700 equivalent might suffice provided you perform well in your application and interviews, although I feel you would be considered very young for these one-year programs at IIMs. XL and SP Jain are also good choices where I have seen people with solid work experiences get in with sub-700 or mid-600 scores.

IIM A's tech/ product management recruitment was specially the highlight of the last recruitment season. ISB is also a strong feeder into tech. I highly recommend preparing well for the applications and taking professional guidance.

Hi, thanks for the reply.
I have studied in Andhra University. Secured 3203 rank in state level entrance exam.

Yes I had 2 promotions in Cognizant.

Nymeria26 - thanks for the update.

Given your goals in PM, it'd be crucial to highlight your motivation and transferable skills (sectoral/ functional) e.g. which part(s) of the product lifecycle have you been involved in, have you worked with PMs, what skillset gaps are you looking to fill in, how will the MBA help, etc. Also try to demonstrate your business-sense through the impact of your roles (i.e. what were the outcomes of the applications you developed, how did it help the business etc.), and quantifying wherever possbile. This can help you differentiate from the pool.

Feel free to reach out with your profile if you'd like to have a deeper chat.

Regards,
Arvind

Hi,

While a 645-665 GMAT score is considered good, a strong score is anything above that. Remember, your GMAT is just one part of a successful business school application. Make sure to allocate enough time to craft compelling essays, prepare for interviews, and highlight your unique experiences. For inspiration, you might check out Rohan's story – he successfully transitioned from TCS to IIMA PGPX.Your 10th and 12th grade percentages are impressive and your BTech GPA is a positive indicator too. Clearly define how your background, experiences, and the MBA will help you transition into a product management role.

Your engagement as a cultural coordinator and a Toastmaster, along with your role in CSR activities at TCS, will help differentiate your application.

All the best!

Hello Nymeria26,

Thanks for writing in.

Good to see a stable work trajectory with one company along with decent extra-curricular activities and a logical career goal; having said that, your years of experience will be just around the border for most of the IIM's; hence, showcasing strong leadership abilities/potential is going to be crucial (especially because you will be judged in relation to many other applicants with greater experience).

A score in excess of 675 will be needed to have a good shot at the top IIM's; a higher score will further increase your chances.

Should you wish to discuss your prospects in greater detail, please feel free to get in touch with us.

Hope this helps.

All the best!

Hey @Nymeria26

As far as I know, most of the B-schools (top IIM's) have students carrying 4-6 years of work-ex on an average. And considering your profile, you have good work.

I would also suggest you target 660+ in your focus GMAT as your competitive applicant pool may have a good GMAT and an outstanding profile. Ensure you have done well at work - won a few awards, been promoted fast, handled responsibility, and led teams as B-schools look for well-rounded candidates.

What you need to illustrate in the application is: What initiatives you have taken to make the difference in the company/client you have worked for. You can strengthen your profile by adding to your extra-curricular activities and also projecting yourself as a strategic and analytical thinker.

All the best for your GMAT.

Kindly try our B-school Selector tool to know which IIMs suit you best with the expected GMAT score.
