Number of men survyed =x
Number of women surveyed=y
y=?
Given:
x+y=1,400
and number considering research an essential goal= 1400*.42=588

Statement 1) states that:

.36x+.5y=560
and given is x+y=1,400
we can solve the two equations to find y, hence sufficient.
