I believe you are asking about Choice (D). Yes, IMO it has been used correctly here. You are looking at a different construction of ..both Person A and Person B are natives of ....

The given option uses a different way to mention the same information. Other options had glaring errors that made this option correct by POE. But then again, there might be other/better ways to write the same sentence.

its easy one...the modifiers actually make the sentence a long one but the biggest mistakes is redundancy...one cant use "originally" and "natives" in a same sentence and only option D is right

Excellent explanations of the reasons why the choice D is correct. I have a question on choice B. It also uses places instead of a place. That to me was a sign of error from a meaning standpoint. This is since these places are not independent I guess. The sentence tells me that the place is just one. The place is about one Vice President taking over President when the latter died.
Let me know if I am hunting down a non-issue

You've got that right. The sentence is trying to say that they both had the same unusual experience. They share one "place in history."

May I raise a question (not about the history of the incident but) about the grammar of verb tense used in this topic?
Of course, the pair of the deceased President and his VP remained unique from 1841 to 1963 when JFK was assassinated and his VP LBJ took over. Therefore, the uniqueness of the first instance disappeared in 1963. How can we then use a present tense verb to describe something deep in the past and that was by itself superseded by another similar incident? We must rather say that they had shared a unique place until 1963. IMO

Well, it says that they were the first to die in office and to replace a deceased president, respectively, so no subsequent event can displace that.
