In my opinion the first boldface plays the role of background information and the second boldface is a counter premise.

A. The first supplies a context for the argument; the second is the argument's main conclusion.
The first part of the statement is correct but the main conclusion of the argument is "The growth of engineered seeds...widespread".

B. The first introduces a development that the argument predicts will have a certain outcome; the second is a state of affairs that, according to the argument, contributes to bringing about that outcome.
First part of the statement is correct but the second part is not that outcome it is meant to contribute to. It is the exact opposite of the outcome it is meant to contribute to.

C. The first presents a development that the argument predicts will have a certain outcome; the second acknowledges a consideration that tends to weigh against that prediction.

The first boldface is the development of new modern strategy that leads people to predict that a major positive improvement is on hand. The second opposes the prediction and says that the prediction is bound to fail because the prediction lacks commercial sense.

It is important to note that neither of them is a conclusion.

I have the question between option (C) and (D). I am not sure this is correct logic to eliminate (D) or not. Please help to validate

From the context, I can summarise like this;

Fact = Plant scientists have used genetic engineering on seeds to produce crop plants that are highly resistant to insect damage.

Prediction#1 = for most farmers the savings on pesticides would not compensate for the higher seed costs and the cost of additional fertilizer.
Premise supports #1 = Unfortunately, the seeds themselves are quite expensive, and the plants require more fertilizer and water to grow well than normal ones.

Prediction#2 = the use of genetically engineered seeds of this kind is likely to become widespread.
Premise supports #2 = since consumer demand for grains, fruits, and vegetables grown without the use of pesticides continues to rise

From my understanding, (D) is not correct because BF#1 is not the evidence directly supporting the prediction#1 BUT BF#2 is correct that is the prediction#1 which the argument is trying to defend -- using prediction#2

Can BF2 be termed as a prediction?
And, the explanation that it is providing a context, used in A, can it be termed as right?
And, the E says, each provide evidence.
For evidence, do the statement need to fully determine the conclusion or it can also be lending just partial support?
Any help would be appreciated.
