First lets dissect the sentence into different clauses.
No longer wanting to travel to a local clinic for a doctor’s appointment, - Modifier modifying the subject many individuals
many individuals are turning to virtual physicians and psychiatrists for help to treat illnesses
that can be diagnosed without physical contact. – that refers to illnesses

A. many individuals are turning to virtual physicians and psychiatrists for help to treat illnesses that can be diagnosed
For help to - is in active voice meaning that individuals are themselves helping to treat illnesses.
Hence incorrect
B. many individuals are turning to virtual physicians and psychiatrists for help in treating illnesses that can be diagnosed
For help in – is the correct idiom to be used here. This is a possible answer.

C. many individuals are turning to virtual physicians and psychiatrists for help from them to treat illnesses could have been diagnosed
For help from them – Wordy and awkward
There is no connector that after illnesses and before could. A connector that is needed here.

D. virtual physicians and psychiatrists are helping many people who are turning to them for help in treating illnesses that they could have diagnosed
No longer wanting to travel to a local clinic for a doctor’s appointment, - Modifier modifying the subject many individuals

E. virtual physicians and psychiatrists help many people who turn to them to treat illnesses that can be diagnosed

No longer wanting to travel to a local clinic......, Who?? Must be patients. So, D & E out because of modifier error.

A. many individuals are turning to virtual physicians and psychiatrists for help to treat illnesses that can be diagnosed - seems ok, let's hold it.

B. many individuals are turning to virtual physicians and psychiatrists for help in treating illnesses that can be diagnosed - seems ok, let's hold it.

C. many individuals are turning to virtual physicians and psychiatrists for help from them to treat illnesses could have been diagnosed - too much wordy and pronoun error.

D. virtual physicians and psychiatrists are helping many people who are turning to them for help in treating illnesses that they could have diagnosed - Incorrect due to modifier error

E. virtual physicians and psychiatrists help many people who turn to them to treat illnesses that can be diagnosed - - Incorrect due to modifier error

Correct idiom is assist (someone) in doing something. Here help is similar to assist. So, assist in treating illness is correct idiom.

I am still waiting for your response. I don't understand why EMPOWERGMAT team is reluctant to admit mistake and correct it as it is clearly evident (like BLACK AND WHITE without any doubt) that i received maximum kudos, from you, in pack 12 (4 kudos; from 2 to 5 question) and you counted one less kudos, leading tie for competition prize and that is completely unfair on moral grounds. Because of above reason, i've been compelled to attach the evidence that awarded kudos to me of pack 12.

Here, i just wanna say that all potential candidates of current quiz and future quiz may be wary that the same thing can happen to them if they see unjust to other member and EMPOWERGMAT may lose its respect and strong impression.

Official Explanation

No longer wanting to travel to a local clinic for a doctor’s appointment, many individuals are turning to virtual physicians and psychiatrists for help to treat illnesses that can be diagnosed without physical contact.

A. many individuals are turning to virtual physicians and psychiatrists for help to treat illnesses that can be diagnosed

B. many individuals are turning to virtual physicians and psychiatrists for help in treating illnesses that can be diagnosed

C. many individuals are turning to virtual physicians and psychiatrists for help from them to treat illnesses could have been diagnosed

D. virtual physicians and psychiatrists are helping many people who are turning to them for help in treating illnesses that they could have diagnosed

E. virtual physicians and psychiatrists help many people who turn to them to treat illnesses that can be diagnosed

After a quick glance over the options, there are a few key differences we can focus on:

1. Starting with “many individuals” vs. “virtual physicians and psychiatrists” (Modifier-Antecedent Agreement)
2. to treat vs. in treating (Idioms)
3. can be diagnosed / could have been diagnosed / they could have diagnosed (Verb Tense)

Let’s start with #1, which deals with modifiers. If we look at the original sentence, we see that it begins with a modifier:

No longer wanting to travel to a local clinic for a doctor’s appointment, many individuals are turning to virtual physicians and psychiatrists for help to treat illnesses that can be diagnosed without physical contact.

The people this phrase is referring to must come directly after the comma. WHO no longer wants to travel to local clinics? Many individuals! Let’s eliminate any sentences that don’t use “many individuals” as the antecedent:

A. many individuals are turning to virtual physicians and psychiatrists for help to treat illnesses that can be diagnosed

B. many individuals are turning to virtual physicians and psychiatrists for help in treating illnesses that can be diagnosed

C. many individuals are turning to virtual physicians and psychiatrists for help from them to treat illnesses could have been diagnosed

D. virtual physicians and psychiatrists are helping many people who are turning to them for help in treating illnesses that they could have diagnosed

E. virtual physicians and psychiatrists help many people who turn to them to treat illnesses that can be diagnosed

We can eliminate options D & E because the antecedent (virtual physicians and psychiatrists) doesn’t match up with the modifier.

Now that we have it narrowed down to 3 options, let’s tackle #2 on our list: to treat / in treating. The correct idiom format here is “for help in X-ing.” Let’s rule out any that don’t use the correct idiom format:

A. many individuals are turning to virtual physicians and psychiatrists for help to treat illnesses that can be diagnosed

B. many individuals are turning to virtual physicians and psychiatrists for help in treating illnesses that can be diagnosed

C. many individuals are turning to virtual physicians and psychiatrists for help from them to treat illnesses could have been diagnosed

There you have it – option B is the only one that uses proper modifier-antecedent agreement, and it’s the only one that uses the “for help in X-ing” idiom correctly! We don’t even have to deal with #3 on the list because we’ve already narrowed it down to one option.

First off, well done on the question - kudos to you for getting the answer right!

As for the second part, we will look into what happened and respond to you via PM later in the day. No one here is reluctant to fix errors - and to suggest that is pretty harsh. We check these forums every 2 days when the OA is posted. Next time, try sending us a PM instead, since we check those daily. This was probably just an oversight, which is bound to happen when humans are involved. ;) Trying to work through a pandemic is hard on everyone - even us - and we hope you can understand that.

"No longer wanting to travel to a local clinic for a doctor’s appointment" modifies the individuals seeing treatment, not the physicians. Hence, D and E are out

A. many individuals are turning to virtual physicians and psychiatrists for help to treat illnesses that can be diagnosed -- "for help to treat" is not correct idiomatic usage.

B. many individuals are turning to virtual physicians and psychiatrists for help in treating illnesses that can be diagnosed -- "for help in treating" is CORRECT idiom

C. many individuals are turning to virtual physicians and psychiatrists for help from them to treat illnesses could have been diagnosed -- "them" has ambiguous referent

D. virtual physicians and psychiatrists are helping many people who are turning to them for help in treating illnesses that they could have diagnosed -- wrong modifier, reason mentioned above

E. virtual physicians and psychiatrists help many people who turn to them to treat illnesses that can be diagnosed -- wrong modifier, reason mentioned above

So, B is correct.

Well done, PoojanB! Kudos to you for cracking the code on this one!

To answer your other question, "turning to someone" simply means to seek someone out for some reason. You still have to provide the reason WHY you're turning to them. You can turn to someone for help, turn to someone for comfort, turn to someone for support, turn to someone for advice, and many more. It's not redundant to say "for help" here because you still have to provide more detail for that idiom to work.

I hope that helps!

Imo. B

EMPOWERgmatRichC,

My assumption: There is no hidden rule (apart from above declared one) or an asterisks mentioning 'Terms and conditions apply' as in the real world.

bb,
Expecting your insights, opinion and involvement to keep alive competition spirit as you both are highly respected administrator and contributor to the forum that has been helping countless GMAT aspirants.

EMPOWERgmatVerbal,
Thanks for reconsideration of my request.
I've PM you on May 06,2020, 05:55 but it was not answered till date because of (whatever unexpected) circumstances. By considering you might not be able to respond to PMs, i've PM to Rich (as he is frequently visiting the forum) on May 19, 2020 to resolve the issue and that was also not answered. So, overall, i wanted and tried to communicate with private conversation mode only but because of all such experiences led me to post on the common forum.
Yes, i absolutely agree that human beings are liable to make mistakes and it should be taken lightly if it is not impacting negatively to anyone. In future, i will communicate to you directly for any other concerns by considering that empowergmat team checks pm daily and responds fairly. I usually never expects immediate or within 24-48 hrs response especially in such pandemic situation.

Pack 13 Q1: No longer wanting to travel to a local clinic... [#permalink]
A. many individuals are turning to virtual physicians and psychiatrists for help to treat illnesses that can be diagnosed - the right idiomatic structure is: to help someone (in) something. here, the infinitive form is used. Hence, eliminate (A)

B. many individuals are turning to virtual physicians and psychiatrists for help in treating illnesses that can be diagnosed - uses the right idiomatic structure. Hence, (B) is the correct answer.

C. many individuals are turning to virtual physicians and psychiatrists for help from them to treat illnesses could have been diagnosed - could have been diagnosed? help FROM them? there are many errors here. Eliminate (C)

D. virtual physicians and psychiatrists are helping many people who are turning to them for help in treating illnesses that they could have diagnosed - who is 'they' referring to? psychiatrists? the physicians? the people? ; there's no clear antecedent to the relative pronoun 'they'. Hence, eliminate (D)

E. virtual physicians and psychiatrists help many people who turn to them to treat illnesses that can be diagnosed - generally speaking, we used 'for' as the preposition to indicate the subject of the infinitive phrase. Here, 'to' is used; this usage is incorrect. Hence, eliminate (E).
