Although the world’s electricity needs currently require fossil fuels and nuclear power, recent studies show that transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy sources by the year 2050 is both possible and necessary.

Errors:
1. The correct idiom is both X & Y- B & D out
2. As the sentence presents the outcome of the recent studies simple present should be used-E out
3. We need to indicate contrast(althought, but, however etc) and not condition (if)- C out

A. Although the world’s electricity needs currently require fossil fuels and nuclear power, recent studies show that transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy sources by the year 2050 is both possible and necessary.- No errors- Uses the correct idiom Although X, Y, indicating contrast- Correct.

B. The world’s electricity needs currently require fossil fuels and nuclear power, but it was found by recent studies to be both possible as well as necessary if by the year 2050 there is a transition to 100 percent renewable energy sources.- The pronoun it is ambiguous & to be both X as well as Y is unidiomatic

C. Currently requiring fossil fuels and nuclear power, recent studies show that if the world’s electricity needs transition to 100 percent renewable energy sources by the year 2050, it would be both possible and necessary.- Modifier issue- Requiring fossil fuels & nuclear power is modifying studies

D. Recent studies, showing it to be both possible as well as necessary to transition the world’s electricity needs by the year 2050, which currently require fossil fuels and nuclear power, to 100 percent renewable energy sources.- To be both X as well as Y unidomatic and which is referring to Year 2050.

E. With the world’s electricity needs currently requiring fossil fuels and nuclear power, transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy sources by the year 2050 has been shown by recent studies as both possible and necessary.-Tense error- has+been+ verb is present perfect something that started in the past and continues in the present and we need simple present

Although the world’s electricity needs currently require fossil fuels and nuclear power, recent studies show that transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy sources by the year 2050 is both possible and necessary.

Explanation:

A. Although the world’s electricity needs currently require fossil fuels and nuclear power, recent studies show that transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy sources by the year 2050 is both possible and necessary.
Looks good both grammatically and structure-wise.Conveys the intended meaning with clarity.

B. The world’s electricity needs currently require fossil fuels and nuclear power, but it was found by recent studies to be both possible as well as necessary if by the year 2050 there is a transition to 100 percent renewable energy sources.
Unidiomatic construction. Both X and Y is the correct idiom.

C. Currently requiring fossil fuels and nuclear power, recent studies show that if the world’s electricity needs transition to 100 percent renewable energy sources by the year 2050, it would be both possible and necessary.
Modifier error changes the meaning into an illogical one. This option reflects that recent studies require fossil fuels and nuclear power.

D. Recent studies, showing it to be both possible as well as necessary to transition the world’s electricity needs by the year 2050, which currently require fossil fuels and nuclear power, to 100 percent renewable energy sources.
Unidiomatic construction. Both X and Y is the correct idiom.Relative pronoun modifier 'Which' wrongly modifies year 2050

E. With the world’s electricity needs currently requiring fossil fuels and nuclear power, transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy sources by the year 2050 has been shown by recent studies as both possible and necessary.
Tense error.Present perfect is absolutely inappropriate here as we are talking about recent studies...present tense is appropriate usage.

Hence Option A is the best choice.

A. Although the world’s electricity needs currently require fossil fuels and nuclear power, recent studies show that transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy sources by the year 2050 is both possible and necessary. -- No issues. Lets keep A.

B. The world’s electricity needs currently require fossil fuels and nuclear power, but it was found by recent studies to be both possible as well as necessary if by the year 2050 there is a transition to 100 percent renewable energy sources. - Incorrect. Both A and B is the correct idiom. Conditional "if" is not needed here. Studies have shown that the transition is possible and the sentence does not give us any condition on which the findings may depend.

C. Currently requiring fossil fuels and nuclear power, recent studies show that if the world’s electricity needs transition to 100 percent renewable energy sources by the year 2050, it would be both possible and necessary. -- Incorrect. Studies do not require fossil fuels and N power.

D. Recent studies, showing it to be both possible as well as necessary to transition the world’s electricity needs by the year 2050, which currently require fossil fuels and nuclear power, to 100 percent renewable energy sources. - Incorrect. Showing "it", no antecedent for "it" here. Both A and B is the correct idiom. Transition to X by <timeframe> sounds better. This is just messy.

E. With the world’s electricity needs currently requiring fossil fuels and nuclear power, transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy sources by the year 2050 has been shown by recent studies as both possible and necessary. -- Incorrect. The original contrast is gone. That world currently depends on A and studies have shown that B is also possible.

Official Explanation

Although the world’s electricity needs currently require fossil fuels and nuclear power, recent studies show that transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy sources by the year 2050 is both possible and necessary.

A. Although the world’s electricity needs currently require fossil fuels and nuclear power, recent studies show that transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy sources by the year 2050 is both possible and necessary.
B. The world’s electricity needs currently require fossil fuels and nuclear power, but it was found by recent studies to be both possible as well as necessary if by the year 2050 there is a transition to 100 percent renewable energy sources.
C. Currently requiring fossil fuels and nuclear power, recent studies show that if the world’s electricity needs transition to 100 percent renewable energy sources by the year 2050, it would be both possible and necessary.
D. Recent studies, showing it to be both possible as well as necessary to transition the world’s electricity needs by the year 2050, which currently require fossil fuels and nuclear power, to 100 percent renewable energy sources.
E. With the world’s electricity needs currently requiring fossil fuels and nuclear power, transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy sources by the year 2050 has been shown by recent studies as both possible and necessary.

After a quick glance over the options, it’s clear that there are a LOT of differences between the options. However, there are a couple places we can start to narrow down our options:

1. recent studies show / it was found by recent studies / Recent studies, showing / has been shown by recent studies (Clarity & Wordiness)
2. both possible and necessary / both possible as well as necessary (Idioms)

Since #2 on our list is an “either/or” split, let’s start there. No matter which direction we go in, we’ll eliminate 2-3 options quickly. The idiom we’re looking for here is “both X and Y.” Let’s eliminate any options that don’t do this correctly:

We can eliminate options B & D because “both X as well as Y” is not idiomatically correct. Now that we have it narrowed down a bit, let’s move on to #1 on our list, which has to do with clarity and wordiness. We need to make sure we’re using clear, concise language.

Since the entire sentence is underlined, we can also take a closer look at organization, pronouns, and modifiers as well!

A. Although the world’s electricity needs currently require fossil fuels and nuclear power, recent studies show that transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy sources by the year 2050 is both possible and necessary.
This is our CORRECT choice! The phrase “recent studies show” is short and sweet, the meaning is clear, and the “both X and Y” idiom is correctly used.

C. Currently requiring fossil fuels and nuclear power, recent studies show that if the world’s electricity needs transition to 100 percent renewable energy sources by the year 2050, it would be both possible and necessary.
This is INCORRECT for a couple reasons. First, the modifier “Currently requiring…nuclear power” is paired up with “recent studies,” which doesn’t make sense. We also have a misplaced “it” pronoun that suggests 2050 is both possible and necessary, which doesn’t make sense. So let’s rule this one out.

E. With the world’s electricity needs currently requiring fossil fuels and nuclear power, transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy sources by the year 2050 has been shown by recent studies as both possible and necessary.
This one is INCORRECT for a couple reasons. First, starting the sentence with “With” instead of “Although,” it takes away the contrast we need to convey the intended meaning. Second, the phrase “has been shown by recent studies” is passive voice, which is a big no-no on the GMAT! It’s too wordy and confusing for readers – option A is much more straightforward and uses active voice.

There you have it – option A was the correct choice all along!

Don’t study for the GMAT. Train for it.

Correct: the world’s electricity needs----> Subject; require----> Verb
recent studies-----> Subject; Show-----> Verb
transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy sources----> Phrase as a subject; is-----> Verb
both possible and necessary---> Correct Idiom

B. The world’s electricity needs currently require fossil fuels and nuclear power, but it was found by recent studies to be both possible as well as necessary if by the year 2050 there is a transition to 100 percent renewable energy sources.

Incorrect Idiom: Both x as well as y
Correct Idiom: Both x and Y

C. Currently requiring fossil fuels and nuclear power, recent studies show that if the world’s electricity needs transition to 100 percent renewable energy sources by the year 2050, it would be both possible and necessary.

Modifier Issue: Who currently require fossil fuels and nuclear power? Recent studies or the world's electricity needs
Obviously latter one. Therefore this option is incorrect.

D. Recent studies, showing it to be both possible as well as necessary to transition the world’s electricity needs by the year 2050, which currently require fossil fuels and nuclear power, to 100 percent renewable energy sources.

Incorrect Idiom: Both x as well as y
Correct Idiom: Both x and y

Which modifier is referring to 2050----> Wrong

Subject is Recent Studies but there is no Verb....This option is a fragment. Incorrect

E. With the world’s electricity needs currently requiring fossil fuels and nuclear power, transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy sources by the year 2050 has been shown by recent studies as both possible and necessary.

Tense problem: has been shown---> Present Perfect
We are talking about recent studies not about the studies which started in the past and continues in the present.
We require Simple present.
Incorrect

Another great explanation, prateekchugh! Kudos to you, and we look forward to seeing how you tackle Question #5! :)

Hence Option A is the best choice.

Great explanation Akp880! Kudos to you! Looking forward to seeing how you tackle Question #5! :)

Welcome back to the kudos contest, ravigupta2912! Great explanation, and kudos to you! Can't wait to see how you tackle Question 5, which is up now! :)
