Hi Everyone,
I have officially finished my GMAT journey and wanted to give back to the community that helped me get across the finish line.
From
Manhattan Prep CAT 1 was 530/33/31 (Score/quant/verbal) to receiving a 710/44/42 (6 on IR and 6 on AWA) - these tools allowed me to target my weakest spots and get over the 700 hurdle. Hopefully this information can help you get to the next level and really achieve something you didn't think was possible.
The idea: the CAT reviews that
Manhattan Prep requires forces you to look at your mistakes and analyze your weakness so that you can improve. You can only improve by being honest with yourself about your abilities.
The Spreadsheets:
The gmatclub error contains an incredible amount of useful data but it needs some curating to really be of value. I created numerous, topic specific spreadsheets to help analyze my performance on different questions. The spreadsheets emphasize process over correct answers, time management & when to cut and run, distribution of questions by topic, and wrong question analysis.
Change it up and make it your own - I doubt your processes are going to be the same as mine, so do something that works for you!
I would do this every time I finished a group of questions (about every 10) to make sure that I was accurately documenting the test taking process and reviewing wrong answers while they were still fresh on my brain.
Steps for the Cleaning
Error Log:
***I recommend downloading 1 version of the
error log and use that as a master file so you can just copy and paste in the new batch instead of retyping the formulas below.*** --> I have also attached an
error log I used so you can see what I mean
bold = column heading1) download
error log 2) create column and type in the formula (referencing cells pertaining to the column title):
2a) =LEFT(
Time taken,2)+(RIGHT(
Time taken,2)/60) --> this standardizes the time to the format 1 = minute,
for example 01:58 = 1.96667
3) create column for right or wrong (C or W) identifier =
3a) =IF(Solution = "Incorrect","W","C")
4) Filter based on
Forum name you wish to update
Open tracker corresponding to whatever topic
& fill in the information where it is appropriate - I am leaving information in the trackers so that you can work off of that
Comments pertaining to specific spreadsheets:
QUANT File
Tabs 1 & 2: Tracker for both DS and PS.The topic column is a drop down menu corresponding to the section title (AB10:BO10)
-- in addition to filling out the information from the
error log, i HIGHLY RECOMMEND typing in 1C or 1W under the relevant section title above, as this data flows thru and give you pct breakdown and timing stats on a topic level basis.
Tab 3: scatter plots of Pct Correct (Y) vs time spent (X) for each difficulty level in the forum)
Tab 4: consolidated quant output
- "pct seen breakdown by topic" is very helpful to make sure you are not focusing the bulk of your studying on a sparsely tested topic (spheres). You can find a distribution breakdown of topics online (i think
magoosh has one, aim for a distribution corresponding to that)
Sentence Correction:
Tab 1: tracker - this does not include a by topic breakdown, SC is more about the process than any of the others, if you can follow the process, you can do well on this topic.
Tab 2: scatter plots of Pct Correct (Y) vs time spent (X) for each difficulty level in the forum)
Critical Reasoning:
Tab 1: tracker - well on this topic.
Performance breakdown info based on section title (AD5:AS10) ((like that in the quant sheet)) requires you to fill in 1C or 1W here to generate data
Also - if you scroll down to about row 511, I copied about 200 links to the 2x daily forum practices questions.
*** CR does not have the scatter plot, if you want one - it should be easy enough to copy one over from the other sheets ***
Reading Comphrension:
Each passage is its own line & breaks down each by question topic. The columns that are red are for the # wrong for that topic and the green columns are for the correct answers.
-- will be honest, this is the least analytics heavy sheet.
-- if you scroll right, every link to the "2 RC's every day" are there -> column AU
