Hi UlissDA,

Congrats on all the good work done so far. You got what it takes :)

Go for Harvard and Stanford - any one of the others are good, but I would recommend MIT given your career goals. Do 3 in Round 1, and the rest in round 2. I say this only because I think you might be able to save money on R2 apps - strong chance you don't have to do any, unless you are gunning for scholarships! :)

Set up a call with us if you want to discuss anything further.

Cheers and Best wishes.

Hi everyone!

I'd like to ask for help evaluating my profile and also for advice on which schools to apply given my career aspirations after MBA. Please see details on my profile below:

Citizenship: Russia
Age: 25 by the time of matriculation (fall of 2016)

Amount of work experience: 48 months by the time of matriculation
Companies: All time spent in an local internet focused VC fund, 3 years as Analyst, 1 year as Associate (got promoted recently); 1st year as an Analyst was during my last year at the university (worked full-time)

GMAT: 770 in the 1st try (Q50/V45, AWA 5.5, IR 8)
TOEFL: waiting for results, hope to be high enough

Previous education: Combined Bachelor/Masters in Math from Moscow State University (1-tier university in Russia), graduated in 2013
GPA: 4.1 on 5.0 scale

Extracurriculars:
Co-founder (working on product) of an indie game studio (built 2 interesting prototypes, tried to raise funding, failed to close due to some local problems in Russia)
Mentor/lecturer at educational program for students wanting to join VC funds in Russia
Helping local non-profit promoting child adoption with revising their content & partnerships strategy

Recommendations: both coming from my colleagues at the fund (Partner and Investment Director), possibly can get recommendation from somebody in our portfolio companies, if it'd be helpful

The most interesting schools for me are:
HBS
Stanford GSB
Wharton
MIT Sloan
Kellogg MMM

Post-MBA Goals:
VC (probably 1st choice)/Strategy/Product Management (all in tech industry), either in the U.S. or in Europe

I'd like to apply to 3 (maximum 4) schools in R1. Harvard/Stanford are the obvious ones to apply to, but the 3rd choice is hard to make. From the sheer point of prestige, Wharton seems better, but MIT Sloan seems potentially more relevant given my interest to continue working with tech company (or inside one of them) after MBA. It would also be helpful to know if my profile looks competitive enough for Stanford/Harvard, and if applying to only 3 schools in R1 seems to be a wise strategy.

Thank you for your help!

UlissDA,

Based on everything you have provided, you have a competitive profile for the schools you mentioned. In terms of which #3 school to apply to in round one, you can't go wrong with either option you are considering, but I would advise you to focus on Wharton for the first round and then add MIT Sloan and one or two more programs in the second round. Wharton has been sending a lot of graduates into your three target areas within tech and since your #1 goal is a VC (and you would want a prestigious VC given your prior experience), Wharton is a great name to have on your resume for that. Even if you don't land the VC job right out of school, it could be easier to get down the line with Wharton on your resume than Sloan or Kellogg, all things being equal.

What fund do you work for now? Feel free to send a separate email to [email protected] if you prefer not to list it here.

Your profile is attractive. That said, you should focus on how to differentiate yourself from others and based on what I see here, there are a number of ways you could do that so you stick out and catch the eyes of the admissions directors.

Best,
Scott

I think you mean ESSEC? Tying your KPO background with a degree in luxury brand management is going to be very tough. Do you have reason to demonstrate strong passion for luxury brand management?

640 might or might not be ok depending on your background. Always a good thing to have supper 600's/700's kind of score. But don't stress yourself too much.

Karthik
