Hi Stratus,

Having read some of your evaluations, I’m impressed by the constructive feedback you give prospective b school applicants. I’m considering Oxford Said and Cambridge Judge for my MBA starting Fall 2018 and would love a profile eval. Thanks in advance!

Male, 27

Bachelors in Business from top ranked University in Pakistan, 3.5 GPA (top 10 percentile of class, As and Bs in quant courses)

GMAT: 730 (Q45, V46)
TOEFL: 116

5 years of work experience in core brand management in CPG industry, first at a local blue chip market leader and- for the past 2.5 years- at a multinational. Responsible for brands with turnover > $250 mn and stewarded marketing budgets in excess of $5mn. (Note: Brand teams are very lean so I do not have direct subordinates, but I have been entrusted with interns and trainees)

Extra curriculars: Debate and Model UN, during high school as a participant and later as a coach. Gained a lot of international exposure and leadership experience through attending and taking high school teams to conferences/tournaments all over the world.

Post MBA Goals: Transition into consultancy since it absorbs my marketing skills such as project management and story telling whilst keeping me industrially fluid. I plan to work with diverse clients in emerging markets for 4-5 years before returning to Pakistan to consult for the multiple conglomerates jockeying for a slice of the booming retail market.

Community and others
Founded a non-profit aimed at spreading critical thinking across Pakistan through debate and public speaking. Now in its sixth year, the organization currently trains students, manages tournaments and organises lectures around the year.
Volunteered at an under-resourced public school teaching the basics of public speaking to a class of 250 culminating in a declamation competition amongst the students.

Hi Stratus,
Well first of all RecoveringDebater, I'm happy to hear that you have noticed my feedback to others and have noticed the thoughtfulness that I put into these. I do try to use my admissions background to steer people in the right direction. Let me review your situation below. And of course- I am curious why you are a recovering debater...
but I'll just wait to hear if you have clarifications on that!

GMAT: 730 (Q45, V46)
TOEFL: 116All of this, the GMAT, the TOEFL- very good. Would love for the Q score to be just a little higher but the overall total is excellent and I think will serve you well at both Said and Judge- with both their averages hovering around 690, your 730 should serve you well and perhaps get you noticed as a top candidate for fellowship considerations.

Responsible for brands with turnover > $250 mn and stewarded marketing budgets in excess of $5mn. (Note: Brand teams are very lean so I do not have direct subordinates, but I have been entrusted with interns and trainees) Again, this is excellent work experience and even without large teams below you,
you do have experience managing large programs and processes- so all this is positive and will impress adcom. If you have been promoted, be sure to highlight this also.

Extra curriculars: Debate and Model UN, during high school as a participant and later as a coach. Gained a lot of international exposure and leadership experience through attending and taking high school teams to conferences/tournaments all over the world. Ah, now the recovering debater references make sense-
this debate experience is a great background for being in schools with the case method so you may think about how your experience in debate will help you be an active participant in the classroom. Interestingly enough, UVA Darden has a question about was there ever a time you changed your mind- and I could see some of the experience you had from debate being very insightful in responding to something like that.

I plan to work with diverse clients in emerging markets for 4-5 years before returning to Pakistan to consult for the multiple conglomerates jockeying for a slice of the booming retail market. This all makes sense to me and sounds well thought out.

When you describe this experience, be sure to think in terms of overall results achieved. How many people did you help, can you think of any success stories from this that have strong impact?

I think you are absolutely on the right track and have a solid profile- if you were considering schools in the US, Darden comes to mind because of the strong culture of the case method there and they have strong consulting too. You might look also at schools in US such as Fuqua, Kenan-Flagler, Kellogg, Booth all for strong consulting- varying levels of competitiveness so a range offered- and also consider INSEAD too because of the strong global connections there.
