A few thoughts on your query and profile roychoudhuryka.

Your academic profile looks good given the pedigree of your colleges. The GPA seems to be converted - don't do that unless specifically asked to. The IIM GPA may need to be put into some perspective. The GMAT score isn't in line with your background - one can usually add 20-30 points to a given school's average to get a sense of the Indian GMAT average.

For reasons mentioned here, we don't speculate on school selection or chances. That being said, while second MBAs are not uncommon, making a completely unrelated change can be quite challenging. It will also be tough to convey that pitch in your applications.

Tough to assess your professional profile without knowing more details of employer brand, work achievements, career acceleration etc. Do feel free to share directly on the below email with a resume for more.

Hope the above helps some.

Cheers,

1) Knowing that you are a graduate from IIM-K, I won't recommend you to apply to medicre colleges
2) Your GMAT score is not well aligned with requirement of Ivy league schools but can be worked with
3) Yoour interest in Finance needs to be justified by your work. In absence of an appealing justification, I would advise against choosing finance as specilization while preparing for application. You should keep it in Strategy or General Management but even that should be justified as you have 4+ years of experience and clarity on goals is much-needed part of the application.

Think about these points and let me know if you want to discuss in person. You can find the details to connect with me in the signature of the post

Hi all,

I recently took my gmat and scored 710(v38,q49). I have completed my undergrad from Jadavpur university Kolkata (Gpa:4.0) in production engineering. I then pursued my MBA from IIM Kozhikode (GPA:3.2). Post which I have been working for 4+ years in the petroleum industry as an area sales manager.
Could you please tell me what all colleges are likely for me?

Thanks in advance

Hi roychoudhuryka,
Having helped many candidates for their 2nd MBAs after IIMs, including the latest in Duke Fuqua with a 720, we understand your case is unique and would require a compelling story to go with. As for career choices, your application would need a build up that can align well with your accomplishments;
Happy to discuss your case one-to-one over a free session.

Hi roychoudhuryka hope this finds you well

Decent profile overall, although an improvement on your GMAT will catalyze the admissions. I would suggest you strongly consider finance/consulting-focused schools in the mid-top tier rankings in the US, such as Olin, Georgetown, Kenan-Flagler, McCombs, and Fosters. If you can drastically improve your GMAT (750+), you may also go to more ambitious schools (Tuck, Duke). You must carefully craft a list of target schools that seem realistic and cater to your interests. Do thorough research, speak with alums, evaluate fit, and put forth a well-researched robust application.

Best wishes

Hi,

a few points to note:
1. your GMAT score is good for most European/ Canadian MBAs (including the top ones). The MBA programs pay more attention to your overall profile and not so much to your GMAT score alone. So go ahead and apply with this score.
2. As MG said, do not convert your previous score. The conversion process is not so straight forward and unless you are using a paid service, which takes many factors into account while converting, you are likely to go wrong if you are doing it by yourself. Moreover, b-schools these days don't ask applicants to convert.
3. You need to be very clear about your reasons for a second MBA or rather, the need for it. B-schools will seek clear answers there. IMO that answer should be led by a need to cover some kind of knowledge/ skill/ experience gap that you are lacking currently and its keeping you from reaching your goals (this is the crux of the goals essay). I say this because I see some loose gaps in the short description you have given here- you are in a sales and marketing role since past four years. Why do you need a specialization in finance? Do you want to switch your career to a finance role? DO you know exactly what that would be? Some of these roles may not be easy to transition into without past finance experience.
Also, note, that a specialization is only a bunch of courses in the same subject combined together. Perhaps you could benefit from the Finance subjects which are part of the core curriculum, as well as take some electives that suit your career need.
Anyhow, this is a short analysis based on the brief description you have given here. Feel free to reach out to me at [email protected], and we can chat further.

Hello roychoudhuryka,

Thanks for writing in.

Considering your profile as a sales manager, we wouldn't particularly recommend goals in the domain of finance. Ideally, you should be looking for career progression in the same domain. Besides, you will need to adequately clarify why you are going ahead with a second MBA and how you see it adding value.

Looking at some 1 year programs in Canada and Europe will make sense. However, before you apply, you must write to each school seeking clarity on whether you will be eligible with a prior management degree.

Should you wish to discuss this in greater detail, please feel free to request for a profile evaluation session.

Thanks.
