Hey there,

Thanks for the additional info / thoughts! Super helpful. So look, based on what you want to do (IB/PE/Entrepreneurship/Politics maybe) an MBA is the right option, not a Masters. Masters is for specialization. You not only need a broad based exposure but you also have goals that shotgun the professional word. Go MBA.

As for reapplicants - it isn't that they're looked upon less favorably. But they're judged on the delta. That's just how it works, right? You have to convince them that what happened since the last time you applied makes a big difference. In your case, that year WOULD be a huge change but it would only get you to the level that would be considered aggressive in the first place. We're seeing a trend in consultants to wait until the end of their 3rd year to apply versus a few years ago the average was ~2 years or so. The answer is simple - the 3rd year makes a big difference. So once again, you'd essentially be reapplying as an aggressive candidate (versus a SUPER aggressive candidate at the end of the 1st year). Being eager isn't a plus. I mean, enthusiasm is great, but eagerness should never come across as a less than mature perspective.

Promotions aren't the only way to set yourself apart (although they are important). Yes, most firms of that size have established promotion schedules and adcoms know that. So that isn't the issue. And I'm not saying you shouldn't switch after a year if that isn't where your heart is. For example, during the recession a lot of people went the consulting route and then went to IB / PE / VC once the economy bounced back a bit. It's totally fine. But do it for the right reasons. And, on top of that, once you make the switch, you need to establish yourself there. No adcom wants to see someone who is just jumping around without any clear story or purpose.

Does that make sense? I can expand on anything if it wasn't clear.

I must say, that was the best advice I've received on this forum yet (and I have received great advice in the past). Thank you very much, I will take everything you said with me as I move forward.
