Hi dtn528,

Your GMAT score is too off for UCLA. I understand that you’ve already taken the test thrice, and it can get hard prepping again and again. If your next shot doesn’t increase your score, you may still keep UCLA as a stretch school.

Although it’s nice to be around the median of your target school, you can still have a shot at some of these schools with the current score. You then need to put forth a solid rest-of-the-application.

Appreciate the response 99Colleges!

I'll attempt to take the GMAT one more time and I'll be starting my applications soon. Do you think it would be wise to just take UCLA out since my GMAT is way too low and just replace it with either Indiana or Carnegie Mellon? Their average GMAT scores are more in line with the other schools I'm applying to.

Here, opinions can be divergent.

I'll keep a stretch school in my list, and do my best with essays and recommendations. You never know.

And you should wait till you've another crack at GMAT. Again, you never know.

Agree with the idea of keeping a stretch goal/reach school. Your other application components could be a great fit and you may get in even with lower stats.

It would also depend on how much you prefer UCLA over the other schools that are more within range.

All the best!

Thanks for all the input everyone! Yea UCLA is actually my #1 choice, but it's also the toughest school to get into. I was even thinking of applying to the part time program since its easier to get in, but I want to do a career change and part time wouldn't help.

Hi All,
Hi dtn528, I think if you are probably a stretch at UCLA with that GMAT score- and the window on R1 options is shrinking by the day- so I would add a wider school list with some of the schools you suggest. You are kind of at a crossroads- you can decide to take one more year- really focus on verbal on GMAT (and improving quant wouldn't hurt either) and then really target to be ready for R1 next year-- or you pull the trigger now and add more schools and try to get in for the earliest deadline you can this year. Only you can decide this- but I think it is hard to be actively trying to improve GMAT scores and applying to programs and working all at the same time. Best wishes as you decide- and if you'd like to learn more about how a firm like ours can help you with both school selection and presenting your best message in the admissions process, here is the link for a free consult: https://stratusprep.com/free-consult/
Can you guys please look at my profile and see if I have a shot at the schools I'm looking at. At the moment I have 5 schools I would like to apply to (ucla, usc, uc Irvine, university of Rochester, and Boston College). I'm also interested in Indiana and Carnegie Mellon, but had crossed them off my list previously. If I'm not competitive for some of these other schools, I may replace them with these ones.

School: Mid-tier UC school
Major: Double major economics & communication
GPA: 3.44
GMAT: 630 (Q 42 V 34 IR 5) I've improved since my first try from a 580 to 630. I took a Manhattan prep course which helped a lot, but each time when I get to the verbal portion, I blank out on critical reasoning and reading comp) should I retake as I've already taken the test 3 times and want to start focusing on starting my essays.
Work Experience: 3 years at a Mortgage Bank (1 year in Customer service, previous 2 in Accounting after promotion) - I've trained over 10 people while in customer service and another 2 while in accounting. I feel that I've been making a large impact on the job so far, working on projects that shorten reporting time for my team as well as other departments.
Extracurricular activities: Community Service organization in college (3 years - held a leadership position within) - got back into community service volunteering at a Pet Rescue since January, but took a break since July to focus on my gmat. I'll be going back to it starting this week.

Post-graduate goals - I want to get into finance, particularly wealth management as an analyst working on models and technical analysis of publicly traded companies. I always thought it was great to have the opportunity to work through analyzing large sets of data and making interpretations of it. That's similar to what I do now at my job, but a completely different function and different type of data.

If anyone could help, I would really appreciate it!

Hi Stratus MBA counselor,

Thanks for the response! I really am looking towards applying this year but I probably won't be applying in round 1 since deadlines are so close already. I'm trying for round 2 for most schools and maybe later for schools with 4 or 5 rounds.

I've set up an appointment for another gmat in mid November and I'm starting on my essays between now and then going to focus on working on verbal as well.

Do you think I need to add more schools as I'm applying to 5 already, which includes ucla.

Thanks!
