Well i am working in merchant navy and currently sailing at the rank of 4th engineer on oil tanker ships Basically my work includes looking after operation of the machineries in engine room on ship and troubleshooting the problems of machineries and to make sure that all the operations on ships are safe

I have done my b.tech in marine engineering from IMU kolkata and has an overall percentage of 72% and recently i gave my gmat and scored 625 and i am in this field from past 5 years and want to pursue MBA from some good B school as after being the part of the world trade for the past 5 years i want to deep dive into it and want to understand this whole buisness in depth.
So if someone can please guide me and help me with the option with this profile I'll be very thankful to you
Thanking you in advance

Thank you
Hi samratpunia,

Your profile is unique and has strong differentiation. Few MBA applicants come from the merchant navy, and your 5 years of experience as a 4th engineer on oil tankers highlights technical expertise, crisis management, and responsibility in high-risk environments—qualities that translate well into leadership. However, your 72% undergrad marks and GMAT 625 is on the lower side for top schools.
GMAT - you should aim for a 685+ score to strengthen your application and stay competitive for top-tier programs and offset your undergrad academic score.

Highlighting your leadership, professional achievements/tangible impact, relevant skills, career goals, unique experiences, and fit with the program effectively will be crucial in crafting a compelling application. To maximize your chances, consider applying to a balanced mix of reach, target, and safety schools.

Hi Samrat

- Go through these. They will give you some insight into how Merchant Navy engineers have fared in the past:
https://www.gyanone.com/insead-mba-hkus ... hant-navy/
https://www.gyanone.com/mba-merchant-navy/
- Your score of 625 is below the median for M7s right now. Try and bump it up to 665+ and preferably 685+.
- While you have diversity in your profile, you are coming in from the engineering side of the merchant navy. So mapping post-MBA goals to current experience is critical. Do not depend on a post-MBA move to general industries.
- Duke (Fuqua) is a school you should particularly look to target as it values Merchant Navy professionals more than others. Though it's not an M7, it's a T10. In the M7, Booth and Kellogg could be good fits if you get a higher score.

Hope this helps. Feel free to come back with more questions.
