Profile Evaluation requested for ISB PGP, IIM - A/B/C PGPX, IIM - U GSCM

Planning to appear for GMAT FE and apply in the next admissions cycle.

I'd love to know the ideal GMAT FE score I should target, as well as realistic chances of admission in the above mentioned colleges

Academics:
10th: 94%
12th: 88%
UG CGPA: 7.42, B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from a Tier 3 University
PG Diploma in AI/ML (part time) from IIIT Bangalore

Work Experience:
Total: 8 years
Tata Consultancy Services: 5 years. Worked as a Data Analyst for a global Telecom multinational. Started as a Trainee and got promoted to IT Analyst during my time there.
Deloitte USI: 2 years 10 months. Worked as a Supply Chain Consultant for multiple Fortune 500 clients. Currently serving notice period here, and planning to prepare for GMAT for next cycle.

Extra-Curriculars:
1. Helped organize multiple donation drives as a part of an NGO
2. Recorded audiobooks for underprivileged students
3. Teach 9th and 10th grade students on the weekends
4. Organized cultural and tech festivals at my colleges
5. An avid reader, was part of the literature club at my college
6. Can play 2 musical instruments

Motivation for MBA:
I want to pursue an MBA to accelerate my career growth, and be able to pivot into managerial roles.

Questions:
1. What would be an ideal GMAT FE score to target to get into ISB PGP, IIM - A/B/C PGPX, IIM - U GSCM programs? If these programs are not realistically targetable for someone of my profile, what other schools/programs (preferably within India) should I look to apply in?
2. Since I'm currently serving my notice period, and plan to appear for the GMAT after a short sabbatical, will my unemployment make my profile lose significant value during the application process?
3. Since I have an average profile, what are some of the things I can do in parallel to my GMAT preparations, to make my profile stand out from the rest?
Hey VizzyFanboy ,

Your profile has a good foundation, with strong academic achievements in school, reputable work experience in data analytics and supply chain consulting at TCS and Deloitte, and commendable extracurricular involvement in community service and cultural activities. However, your undergraduate CGPA from a Tier 3 university and limited international exposure might be areas of concern for highly competitive programs like ISB PGP and IIM A/B PGPX. To strengthen your application, targeting a GMAT FE score of 720+ for ISB and IIM PGPX programs would be ideal, while for IIM Udaipur's GSCM program the adcom would look more at your overall profile instead of only fousing on the GMAT score. During your planned sabbatical, you can focus on enhancing your profile through certifications in project management or supply chain, expanding leadership roles in your NGO work, and networking with alumni to refine your application strategy. With strategic preparation, clear post-MBA goals, and a strong GMAT score, your profile can be competitive for all your choices. Wish you good luck!

Dear VizzyFanboy,

Will take a stab at answering your queries:

1. What would be an ideal GMAT FE score to target to get into ISB PGP, IIM - A/B/C PGPX, IIM - U GSCM programs? If these programs are not realistically targetable for someone of my profile, what other schools/programs (preferably within India) should I look to apply in?
CA : 645+ FE ; needless to say the more the merrier.

2. Since I'm currently serving my notice period, and plan to appear for the GMAT after a short sabbatical, will my unemployment make my profile lose significant value during the application process?
CA: No. Its always OK to take career breaks specially in a career that has spanned more than half a decade.

3. Since I have an average profile, what are some of the things I can do in parallel to my GMAT preparations, to make my profile stand out from the rest?
CA : Try to take up initiatives that will help you achieve your short term goals post ISB and better if they also help you achieve your long term goals. For ex, if your goal is start your venture down the lane, try going to startup mixer events / hackathons and see if you can somehow help early stage founders in some way (even if it is pro bono consulting) leveraging your professional experiences thus far.

Feel free to reach out once you are ready to apply.

Cheers and all the best !

Hi VizzyFanboy,

Your overall profile denotes a strong hold on your applications. Based on your strengths:

Solid Work Experience: Your 8 years of experience, including roles at TCS and Deloitte USI, demonstrate strong work ethic and relevant skills.
Technical Background: Your engineering degree and AI/ML diploma showcase technical expertise, valuable in today's business landscape.
Leadership Potential: Your experience organizing events and teaching indicates leadership qualities.
Social Responsibility: Community involvement and volunteering demonstrate social awareness.
Areas for Improvement:

Academic Background: While your overall GPA is decent, a stronger undergraduate GPA could be beneficial.
GMAT Score: Achieve a high GMAT FE score to counterbalance your GPA.
Target GMAT FE Score: Aim for a GMAT FE score of 700 or above to be competitive for top programs like ISB PGP, IIM A/B/C PGPX.

ISB PGP and IIM A/B/C PGPX: Your profile is strong, but these programs are highly competitive. A GMAT FE score of 700+ can significantly improve your chances.

Impact of Unemployment: A short sabbatical for GMAT preparation shouldn't significantly impact your application. Clearly explain your career goals and how the MBA aligns with your future aspirations in your essays.

Strengthening Your Profile:
Focus on GMAT: Dedicate time to GMAT preparation to achieve a high score.
Highlight Achievements: Quantify accomplishments at work using metrics to showcase your impact.
Leadership Roles: Seek leadership opportunities in volunteer work or your community.
Network with Alumni: Connect with alumni of your target schools for insights and potential mentorship.
Additional Certifications: Consider relevant certifications like Six Sigma or Project Management to enhance your profile.

By focusing on these areas and demonstrating a strong GMAT score, you can increase your chances of admission to top MBA programs in India. Our MBA consultants would be happy to connect with you over a free profile evaluation discussion. You can schedule a free consultation with our experts or connect directly with our experts via call at +91 7780769732.

VizzyFanboy here's my brutally honest feedback that will help you set the right expectations

1. What would be an ideal GMAT FE score to target to get into ISB PGP, IIM - A/B/C PGPX, IIM - U GSCM programs? If these programs are not realistically targetable for someone of my profile, what other schools/programs (preferably within India) should I look to apply in?

No single score guarantees call or possible success at all these schools. It is much more difficult to get into ISB, IIM A and B than the others. If you want to target the best, you should aim for as high a score as possible. Whether you think you have what it takes is something only you can know. If you ask me for a benchmark, I would say above 695. If you are now laughing nervously at my suggestion, you should settle for IIM C and U and the like.

2. Since I'm currently serving my notice period, and plan to appear for the GMAT after a short sabbatical, will my unemployment make my profile lose significant value during the application process?

This is exactly why I suggested a very high score. Quitting your job to prepare for the GMAT is the first sign of falling behind from an adcom's perspective. No amount of storytelling can convince Indian adcoms otherwise. It is what it is. However, if you have made up your mind, you should start looking for other job opportunities and start interviewing so that you have a lucrative offer when you start working on your applications.

3. Since I have an average profile, what are some of the things I can do in parallel to my GMAT preparations, to make my profile stand out from the rest?

As mentioned above, you should look for jobs or internships at high-growth start-ups where you can gain practical experience in solving business problems.

Best wishes

VizzyFanboy, some thoughts, in addition to the ones mentioned above:

  • While there isn't a minimum threshold score, a 685+ GFE would be ideal, particularly for ISB and IIM-A/ B/ C.
  • Balancing GMAT/ GRE prep with work is one of the (unsaid) abilities being tested as part of the overall process. To that end, any career break beyond 3-4 months raises the AdCom's eyebrows. The best way is to avoid it i.e. not quit the job for GMAT prep, and/ or join back the workforce if you've already.
  • Besides a strong GMAT, aim to enhance the strength of your work-ex, extracurriculars etc. This article covers 10 key ways on how you can improve your profile as an MBA applicant.

Hope this helps. Feel free to reach out for a deeper chat.
