Publishing in 1829, the evils of slavery were publicly condemned by George Moses Horton, who was the first black poet to do so.

A) Publishing in 1829, the evils of slavery were publicly condemned by George Moses Horton, who was the first black poet to do so.

B) George Moses Horton, whose work was published in 1829, was the first black poet to condemn publicly the evils of slavery.

C) George Moses Horton, publishing in 1829, condemned the evils of slavery publicly and was the first black poet to do that.

D) Publicly condemning the evils of slavery, George Moses Horton was the first black poet to do so and he was published in 1829.

E) George Moses Horton, who was published in 1829, was the first black poet who publicly has condemned the evils of slavery.

Let's pick on meaning because it is easy to pick on.

A - who did what? George Moses condemned slavery and was the first black poet to do so. He did so in general, not while publishing. This sentence distrots that meaning.

B - looks proper, correctly indicates the required. let's come back

C - two issues - first that at the end is unclear, what was it referring to? Publishing or condemning? Next, usage of ing form of the verb is wrong, it if were used 'while publishing' it would at least make some sense here, it is just lost.

D - Again, change in intended meaning. by placing 'and he was....' towards the end, it appears that the poet was published after he condemned the evil. Surely that is not the case. - out

E - George Moses Horton can not be published - out!

B remains alone as a winner.

Publishing in 1829, the evils of slavery were publicly condemned by George Moses Horton, who was the first black poet to do so.

Seems to be a case of modifier errors at the beginning - let's check the choices.

A) Publishing in 1829, the evils of slavery were publicly condemned by George Moses Horton, who was the first black poet to do so.

Opening modifier error, Who or what is 'publishing'? Can't be evils of slavery - reject

B) George Moses Horton, whose work was published in 1829, was the first black poet to condemn publicly the evils of slavery.

Seems good - but lets quickly check the other choices

C) George Moses Horton, publishing in 1829, condemned the evils of slavery publicly and was the first black poet to do that.

Meaning error, usage of 'publishing' is wrong

D) Publicly condemning the evils of slavery, George Moses Horton was the first black poet to do so and he was published in 1829.

Run-on error

E) George Moses Horton, who was published in 1829, was the first black poet who publicly has condemned the evils of slavery.

Meaning error, usage of 'who was published' is wrong

B is our winner!

A) Publishing in 1829, the evils of slavery were publicly condemned by George Moses Horton, who was the first black poet to do so.
Wrong tense. Publishing implies happening right now. We need past tense.

Perfect. whose correctly refers to Horton. Sentence is complete even if we take out the non vital clause.

C) George Moses Horton, publishing in 1829, condemned the evils of slavery publicly and was the first black poet to do that.
Wrong tense. Publishing implies happening right now. We need past tense.

D) Publicly condemning the evils of slavery, George Moses Horton was the first black poet to do so and he was published in 1829.
The poet was not published. His work was published. Incorrect.

E) George Moses Horton, who was published in 1829, was the first black poet who publicly has condemned the evils of slavery.
The poet was not published. His work was published. Incorrect.
