IMO A

well i am sure of eliminating C and D for following reasons
C- meaning altered
D-The resulting sales figures having been so depressed that
one reason is having been(yet to see it as a correct choice) is almost always wrong
and another resulting sales is awkward
E - i think if we replace it in the place of original , then we dnt need as a result of
B/n A and B on the test day i wud go for A as bth are same.

Frankly, I can't distinguish between A and E.
I need an explaination too.

E changes meaning ... as a result government did something

IMO A - sales were depressed as a result of something , then government did something
