The online application process of most B schools involves sections that ask for post MBA career choice and major of choice during the MBA.
Do these choices affect the application in any way?

For example: If I choose a major in Consulting and my post MBA career choice to be Strategy or Management Consulting for a B school that is well known for propelling students into the consulting sector does that reduce my chances of getting in?

Well the Majors are there for a reason. So the schools do expect you to have clarity on how you will use the academic options they provide to achieve your career goals. If you are planning a career in Marketing for instance and say I will major in Finance that is not necessarily a sure shot reject but at least begets some explaining in your essays.

Cheers,

Yes, absolutely.

The choice of your career is one of the most significant ones you will make regarding your application.
Why? Because the ENTIRE idea of your application revolves around that one thing - your professional goals!!
So you have to make sure that your goals are:
- Connected to your past
- Logical
- Plausible
- Ambitious

I hope this helps!
Best,
Jon Frank

yes, this certainly factors in to things. Your response here shows them that you have thought through how their program can support you as well as to ensure your development goals that you will communicate elsewhere in the application all align. For example someone who states there career goal is to be a marketing manager but does not have a marketing background and does not plan to major in marketing may be a little off to the ad comm. You don't have to be as literal with your choices here but things should certainly make sense
