It sounds like in person is generally preferred (look in the "Schedule Interview" tab of the link they give you), but doesn't sound like it makes a difference whether that's in person with an alumnus in your home town or in person with a member of the Admissions Student Committee in Ann Arbor.
Invited an hour back..is everyone planning to go for the team-based exercise? I know they mention that it won't negatively impact the application but anyone from R1 can share if people who had taken part in the exercise were more prone to be selected? I am an international and not sure if I can go in the options provided by them..
