Hi Tejas123,

Thank you for providing such a detailed profile. I must say that your profile is amazing. Rotman places a strong emphasis on diversity and excellence. Make sure to include these in your applications. Let's go through your profile one by one.

Academics: They are good, and you have a decent GMAT score for Rotman. So, this part is pretty sorted.

Work-experience: You've undertaken different roles and worked in different companies, and if you can highlight this as a strength in your post-MBA goals (by making them more precise and inspired by past experiences) then job hopping shouldn't be a problem. I believe the business you co-founded will have a significant influence on your profile. You may share your experience, learnings, and marketing methods for increasing your followers from 0 to xxxx (and revenue, no matter how small it is). I'd like to learn more about your work experience, such as leadership positions and impact; to guide you more on this.

ECs and accomplishments: Your participation in numerous events and organisations demonstrates your creative personality (from childhood). From your school days when you represented India at an international children's festival to your involvement in social initiatives (at present). There are wonderful stories, and talking about them with the proper enthusiasm will undoubtedly add diversity to your apps. I would recommend mentioning the most significant ones that will give a global perspective to your entire profile.

Your post-MBA goals make sense though they need a little more shaping. Overall you have a good profile, and now everything will depend upon how to create a good narrative to put a mark on the adcoms. You may want to read an article on how to frame practical post-MBA goals essays, you will get some insights. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further chances to b-school. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Re: Rotman Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Hi. I will be very eternally grateful for a Profile Evaluation and most

Demographic:
African, Male, 31yrs

GMAT:
Not yet taken. Scheduled to take exam in time to apply for Round 1. Target score 700+

Academic Work:
BSc. Maths & Statistics, CGPA - 2.88/4.00, Also Passed CFA level 2 Exam

Work Experience:
4.8yrs experience in a local boutique investment banking firm (An Issuing House & Fund Manager) in my home country. Currently an Associate and head of Analysts and first year associates.
My experience involves Debt Capital Market (DCM) transactions. Have been part of the team of the biggest transactions in my country (approx. up to $7bn). My firm has been involved in more than 90% of all DCM transactions in my home country. Firm has built quite a niche in the DCM space.
Also manages all of the firm's relatively small Assets under management (firm is primarily focussed on DCM transactions)

Extra-curricular:
Non-Executive Director in an NGO that goes on outreach in the poorer areas of my home country
Started a book club for me and a couple of friends. We meet to read books and discuss social issues

MBA Goals:
Short term - emigrate to the USA. Pivot into Investment Banking (IB) where I have a lot of local experience and assimilate as much as I can and also build a network.
Long term: IB Market in home country is small. Would like to go back home and and help the DCM/ Fund Management industry to grow with new and innovative products

Target Schools: Johnson, Tepper, Rotman, Ross, Darden

Target Recruiters: US investment Banks i.e. Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Lazard, Barclays, Citi, Deutche Bank etc.

I understand that I have a very unattractive profile and not sure if I even stand a chance given my age, gpa and experience. Realistically what are my chances of getting into a school like Johnson (Not sure how I am going to even ace the gmat). And I am planning for the Fall 2022 academic year. By my count I have a little under 3months to study for the GMAT.

Any advice/help on how to achieve my goals will be very much appreciated.

Re: Rotman Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Background and nationality : Indian Male, 24 years old

Schooling : 10th (9.4 CGPA) ; 12th (93.2%, including a 100 in Chemistry)

Undergrad Information : B.E. Chemical Engineering from Panjab University; CGPA 8.24 (Top 20)

GMAT: 690 (V35 Q49 IR6 AWA6)

Work experience and leadership :
2 years of work experience as of now as a Process Engineer at a leading US based oil and gas engineering, procurement and construction firm.
Highly technical field involving designing of entire production plants. Worked in projects from oil refining to natural gas extraction. Handled entire units costing millions of dollars, designing from scratch most cost efficient setups. Usually in this industry, graduates do not get such opportunities. Worked with Clients from USA, Australia, Netherlands, Oman. Highly team-oriented field.
No leadership experience at workplace as in this industry, leadership roles are given after significant years of experience.

Community and others : Actively involved in extra-curricular activities during undergrad.
1. Employee of a college based start-up as Designer for 3 months (designing promotional posters on Adobe Photoshop)
2. Part of NSS
3. Chartered a Leo Club (under guidance of Lions Club International). I was the President of the club for the first year. Held events like blood donation camp, fund raising campaign for charity. Rose the membership from 20 to 35 members during my tenure.
4. A passionate basketball player, tried for university but wasn't selected for 2 continuous years.

Not involved in anything much after 3rd year of college, since health didn't allow (see "Anything else?" section) Just did a few things (also failed at one):-
1. Been involved in part time basketball coaching under the guidance of my high school coach for 9-10 months pre pandemic. This was the only way I could remain connected to my passion.
2. Started working at an NGO, MAD, as a teacher, but couldn't continue because of health issues again.

Post MBA goals : Now health seems to be much better and seems I could study further. Want to get into consulting, preferably in energy or operations domain.

Motivation for MBA :
Once a very lucrative industry, energy sector, now this industry has earned a very bad name for itself due to the regulars ups and downs. This industry is highly negatively advertised.
Being through a tough year for oil and gas industry, I have seen lot of firms struggle (laying off employees, shutting down offices) and some others struggling to make transition into green energy. I believe being on the technical side right now helps me understand how the industry and projects work. With the required managerial skills, i want to consult these firms to improve their operations and help them positively advertise themselves.

Anything else?
Since 3rd year of engineering everything went downhill. Was detected 4th stage cancer. Still managed to continue my studies despite suggestion from doctors and teachers to take a break. However, CGPA took a huge hit that semester and landed in top 20 from top 10. After nine months of treatment, due to severe side-effects (even facing some now after 3 years of treatment) couldn't get involved in any extra activity.

Kindly evaluate my profile for Rotman 2021 application cyle. Let me know the downsides of my application so that i can improve if possible.

Hi parampreet1997,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Starting with stats, your undergrad GPA is good. If you can retake the GMAT and improve your score by 20-30 points, it will maximize your chances. However, we have helped one of our applicants with 670 GMAT to get into Rotman. You can check the story here.

On the work front, your work experience seems good. You can talk about the roles and responsibilities you have handled and what impact it has created. As you have handled a unit solely, you must have encountered several obstacles; you might discuss them and how you dealt with them. Your profile also has some international exposure; attempt to give it a global perspective. In terms of your ECs, you might discuss the club you were a member of and your passion for basketball. Adcoms will understand your health issue, so don’t think about it much. It’s really great to see, you didn’t lose hope and are working towards a better future. Your post-MBA goals make sense, and it shows your willingness to contribute and vision for making a better future in your industry.

Overall you have a good profile. I would like to know some major aspects of your work profile and impact to find your USPs. Your work experience is lower than the average required, but if we manage to create good, impactful stories, then you may have a shot at Rotman as it reviews your profile holistically. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further chances to Rotman. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Hi Romil042,

Thank you for sharing! Since you are part of a competitive applicant pool as an Indian male engineer, you will want to try to maximize your GMAT score for Rotman. Breaking 700 will be key here to enhance your candidacy.

Looking at your short and long-term goals, you will really want to share how you will be unique. Along with specifically articulating what position you hope to achieve, you should think deeper and share your vision for improving the manufacturing industry.

As for your work experience, it sounds like you have some strong leadership/management experience.

To maximize your chances of acceptance, I recommend securing a higher GMAT score and actively engaging with Rotman and your other target by joining virtual events, and if appropriate, connecting with ad com members. Of course, articulating a compelling personal story will help as well. Feel free to take a look at Personal MBA Coach's services to learn how we can provide you with customized support.

If you are seeking guidance throughout the application process, do not hesitate to reach out to scott@personalmbacoach.com. We work with a lot of Indian applicants and send folks to top b-schools across the globe.

Best,
Personal MBA Coach

Hi Romil042,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Your profile looks good on the surface. Starting with stats, your undergrad GPA is good. The average GMAT score for Rotman is 670, for Indian applicants GMAT score 20-30 points above the average is always recommended. So, if you try to push your score 700+ it will maximize your chances. However, your overall profile also matters. We have helped one of our applicants to get into Rotman with 670 GMAT, you can check out the story here.

On the work front, working in an MNC should imply some big projects of yours. You've made significant progress in your career and should be able to demonstrate solid leadership experience. To strengthen your candidacy, you must speak about the roles and responsibilities you have taken on and their impact on the organisation. You also have some work experience in your family's business, speak about that. Your accomplishments are impressive. Try to explain all of these in a way that will exhibit you as a high-performing individual. Your post-MBA goals make sense, but they need to be elaborated a little more and your vision behind it.

Overall you have a good profile. Try to increase your GMAT score, and everything else will depend on your essays and how you present your story to the adcoms. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further chances to Rotman. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Hi Sameergupta,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Starting with stats, your undergrad GPA is good, and try to push your GMAT score 700+ to maximize your chances. On the work front, working at Big4 for 5 years must have provided you with global exposure, as b-schools are quite demanding in this area. I can see a good career progression and impact in your work profile, which has led to you receiving awards. In addition, you have worked as a freelance consultant for big organizations, which sounds impressive and will allow you to share incredible stories and demonstrate your capabilities. From the details you have shared, you have a great profile. Just focus on your GMAT and try to get a competitive score, and the rest will depend on how you connect the dots and build a great narrative to put a mark on the adcoms.

I would like to know more about your profile, such as post-mba goals, international projects, and their impact, because all these will play an important role in your profile. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further chances to Rotman. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

How to enhance your application and maximize your chances for fall intake

Hi there Sameergupta,

Thank you for your post. As you mentioned, retaking the GMAT is probably a good idea if you want to increase your chances of getting into Rotman. Can it work with a 690? Certainly. However, given your competitive demographic, you really want to shine here.

Are you considering applying to other schools as well? I would advise you to increase the number of schools you are looking at to really maximize your chances of success as competition increases and acceptance rates fall. If you do both of those things, your chances will increase quite a bit.

It sounds like you have some significant accomplishments at work. Now it will come down to developing a compelling story and successfully articulating your goals (both key components of Personal MBA Coach's services).

Do not hesitate to reach out to scott@personalmbacoach.com if you want help crafting your applications. Personal MBA Coach helps numerous folks from consulting backgrounds get into top MBA programs and earn significant scholarships each year, and was founded by a former consultant!

Sameergupta, thanks for sending in more details. I’m impressed by seeing the projects you have worked upon and all these are your major USPs. They are demonstrating your personality as a high performing individual. You have worked with different countries' governments that show your loyalty and commitment for the people you are working with and the trust you have built. Your post-mba goals make sense, and I am able to link the dots with your prior work experience.

As you are a part of the LGBTQ community, I want to tell you one thing. Last week we conducted a webinar for LGBTQ students to help them better understand and take full advantage of the scholarships and grants provided by several b-schools. The agenda for this session was, 1) What top MBA programs are doing for LGBT+ (communities, clubs, scholarships, and grants). 2) How can you have an edge for your target schools? 3) Live Q&A and peer discussion. More information about this session may be found here. Although the session is done, if you like to discuss the above questions, we are delighted to hop on a call with you and guide you. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Thank you for the response, much appreciated.

Since you asked about further details, please refer the following.

Previously, I have helped governments of Morocco (cyber security strategy), Philippines (strategy and solution), India (operations), and Malaysia (strategy and solution) with their National Digital Identity Programs. Apart from that, I have also worked on several minor projects in policy-making, privacy audits, cyber strategies and frameworks, etc. for various government and private sector clients.

As part of a Big4 firm, apart from projects, I have also helped with thought leadership papers and business development. I have submitted business proposals on behalf of my firm for worth well over 100MM USD, have published around 5 white papers in the past 5 years, and have supported the firm with various event management activities. I have groomed several interns and junior consultants as well.

My seniors have been very supportive, and because of their support I have been able to get several globally recognised certifications in cyber security - such as CISSP, CISM, ISO 27001, amongst several others.

My post-MBA goals would be to work with one of the global development organisations such as the world bank group, asian development bank, united national development program, bill and melinda gates foundation, etc. I would like to expand my consulting horizon and include program economics, finances, sustainability, governance etc. as well when it comes to development of such national level strategies. Currently I don't have a particular "focus area" and i'm working with such programs in a general manner (as we say in consulting, "jack of all trades").

Post my MBA, I also want to move permanently to Canada as I'm a part of the LGBTQ community and as i understand, the Canadian culture is much more inclusive. I'm not sure whether that is a relevant part of the story but nonetheless.

Please let me know your views. Once again, thank you very much for the response.

Hi nanoname,

I already evaluated your profile and would be happy to do it again for Rotman. Rotman believes that a diverse range of experiences helps to shape an individual. To stand out, you should showcase anything other than your work that displays your passion, resilience, ambition, and so on. I believe your work experience and ECs will assist you in bringing all of this together. Exhibiting your narrative appropriately to adcoms can place you in a good position. You have a good shot at Rotman with this profile. What will matter most in your application is connecting the experiential dots and building a great story to stand out.

If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further chances to the b-schools. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Hi Neha,

Yes I recall we had a conversation over the phone as well. You'd mentioned that the founder, Shantanu, would review my profile and reach out over the week, but since that didn't happen.
So I assumed something went wrong and that your team didn't want to proceed ahead.
