Why A is correct? Doesn't it compare time with legendary mammals? In which cases we use/assume ellipsis? I thought B stood a better chance here.

Past perfect tense (had) is used
1. For sequencing two or more events that are in the past
Mary had been playing when John came home.
Here Mary was playing before John came home.

2 . to show Possession : I had a wonderful car but now my neighbor owns it.

Hence use of past perfect is not correct in statement B since sequencing is not required

a. that lived at the same time as other legendary mammals -> not the time is compared to mammals, but the mammals lived at the same time as the legendary ones (lived)
B. that had lived at the same time as had other legendary mammals -> Why would you want to add past perfect here. According to your reasoning, the same mistake would still be present, btw.

Hope, that my explanation was clear.

In a parallel structure (including comparison) it is alright to omit repeated parts (including verbs) from the second element of the structure. Option A before omission would be:

..that lived at the same time as other legendary mammals such as the woolly mammoth and saber toothed tiger (lived).

The verb "lived" has been omitted from the second element.

I am not sure why A is accurate? We are comparing a time point with some legendary mammals. B is a bit wordy and we don't need the had but isn't B is the next best thing?

Past perfect is used to represent action that took place before another event that took place in past.
Living must have preceded the extinction, so we are supposed to use past perfect, isn't it?

Scientists theorize that tuberculosis may be responsible for the extinction of the mastodon , a species of mammal that lived at the same time as other legendary mammals such as the woolly mammoth and saber toothed tiger

A. that lived at the same time as other legendary mammals Correct answer. There are no errors here.

B. that had lived at the same time as had other legendary mammals There is no need to use past perfect "had lived" as we are not talking about two events occuring in the past. Eliminate.

C. that lived at the same time those others had "those others had" is erroneous - there is no need to use "had" and "those" does not have any antecedent. Eliminate.

D. living at the same time as those others did Usage of present tense in "living" is incorrect. Eliminate.

E. living at the same time as those were Same as (D). Eliminate.

Hope this helps.

A. that lived at the same time as other legendary mammals -- Correct. Tenses are in order.

B. that had lived at the same time as had other legendary mammals -- Incorrect. Usage of two past perfect does not make sense. Both the actions occurred simultaneously.

C. that lived at the same time those others had -- Incorrect. No comparison marker here. Also incorrect tenses. Past perfect (had) is not needed and contradicts "same time"

D. living at the same time as those others did -- Incorrect. "those" has no referent. Also "living" conveys that the mastodon is still living.

E. living at the same time as those were -- Incorrect. Same as E.
