Hi Scott,

In the link you have shared you have mentioned that we should avoid taking gmat mock some time before actual gmat. I have one gmat exam prep 4 left. As discussed in thought I should take it tomorrow or day after tomorrow since monday is my actual gmat. What are your thought on this.

Hi kreel11,

SInce you have only about a week left until your GMAT, I don't think that you should make any significant changes to your study routine. Certainly, it couldn't hurt to take one more practice exam. Once you complete that practice exam, spend time reviewing your mistakes, so you can find and improve upon any weak areas in quant or verbal. Additionally, you could engage in some topical practice to find remaining weak areas. For example, practice Number Properties by answering 50 or more questions just from Number Properties: LCM, GCF, units digit patterns, divisibility, remainders, etc. As you do such practice, do a thorough analysis of each question that you don't get right. If you got a remainder question wrong, ask yourself why. Did you make a careless mistake? Did you not properly apply the remainder formula? Was there a concept you did not understand in the question? By carefully analyzing your mistakes, you will be able to efficiently fix your weaknesses and in turn improve your GMAT quant skills. Number Properties is just one example; follow this process for all quant and verbal topics.

Also, I wrote an article that you may find helpful that has some more advice regarding how to treat the final week leading up to your GMAT as well as some tips for test day.

Let me know how things end up, and please reach out with any further questions. Good luck!

If you did not take it today, I think it's totally fine to take the practice test tomorrow.

Good luck on the exam, pal! I feel I would do the same! Taking it on the 10th may.

For my experience in exams, last couple a days it is better to focus on mental state, not overthinking it and maybe just checking some flashcards to make sure they are fresh in your mind!

Best of luck monday!

Hi Scott,

Gave my gmat today. Got a disappointingly low score of 590 with split as q43 v28. Exam overall felt harder than the mocks i took, especially quant wherein inhal a hard time managing the time and guessed on quite a few questions. Questions seemed lengthy especially from arithmetic. There were hardly any freebies, this coming from someone who scored q49 on most mocks.

I am really disappointed and exhausted after preparing for almost 1 year. Don't know what to do now to score 700+

Hi kreel11,

I’m sorry to hear how things went with your GMAT. Do you plan to dive back into your prep and retake the GMAT?

Scott,

Yes indeed I do and I might start in couple.of days after finalizing the strategy to score well. It will be great if you could provide some tips to maintain consistency and score high in quant in actual exam as well. I have material from manhattan which I did not do this time around as opposed to previous attempts and I also did official questions mostly via gmatclub question bank from my weaker areas.

Hi kreel11,

Since you scored Q43 it’s a sign that you have some weak areas in quant that must be addressed. To improve your quant score to a higher level, you need to go through go through GMAT quant carefully to find your exact weaknesses, fill gaps in your knowledge, and strengthen your skills. The overall process will be to learn all about how to answer question types with which you currently aren't very comfortable and do dozens of practice questions category by category, basically driving up your score point by point.

For example, if you find that you are not strong in answering Number Properties questions, then carefully review the conceptual underpinnings of how to answer Number Properties questions and practice by answering 50 or more questions just from Number Properties: LCM, GCF, units digit patterns, divisibility, remainders, etc. When you are working on learning to answer questions of a particular type, start off taking your time, and then seek to speed up as you get more comfortable answering questions of that type. Number Properties is just one example; follow this process for all quant topics.

Each time you strengthen your understanding of a topic and your skill in answering questions of a particular type, you increase your odds of hitting your score goal. You know that there are types of questions that you are happy to see and types that you would rather not see, and types of questions that you take a long time to answer correctly. Learn to more effectively answer the types of questions that you would rather not see, and make them into your favorite types. Learn to correctly answer in two minutes or less questions that you currently take five minutes to answer. By finding, say, a dozen weaker quant areas and turning them into strong areas, you will make great progress toward hitting your quant score goal. If a dozen areas turn out not to be enough, strengthen some more areas.

So, work on accuracy and generally finding correct answers, work on specific weaker areas one by one to make them strong areas, and when you take a practice GMAT or the real thing, take all the time per question available to do your absolute best to get right answers consistently. The GMAT is essentially a game of seeing how many right answers you can get in the time allotted. Approach the test with that conception in mind, and focus intently on the question in front of you with one goal in mind: getting a CORRECT answer.
