MBA in India Vs MBA Abroad

Before deciding to pursue an MBA from India or abroad, you need to be clear about your career aspirations!
There’s no point in getting accepted into an MBA program that doesn’t offer the specialization you want to develop a career in.
So reflect carefully on where you see yourself in a few years after an MBA and only apply to the B-Schools that can help get you there.
If you see yourself working overseas, whether at a higher level or otherwise, it makes sense to do your MBA abroad.
But if you don’t see yourself leaving the comforts of staying with your family behind, then maybe you should just get your MBA in India itself.

Here are a few advantages of doing an MBA in India:

1. Less Expensive:
Doing an MBA within India is going to work out cheaper than doing an MBA abroad.
2. No Visa Issues:
You don’t have to worry about post-study Visas.
3. Familiar Network and Culture:
It’s easier to thrive in a familiar culture where you already have an existing network of friends and family.
Here are a few advantages of doing an MBA Abroad:

1. Global Exposure
In terms of networking, studying abroad will inevitably mean that your classroom itself will have representatives from multiple countries in one place. This helps you gain insights into the way things work in various countries around the world.
2. Better Teaching Methodology
MBA programs abroad generally use a host of tools and techniques to enhance your learning experience. The process of learning is significantly more interactive and experiential than it is in India.
3. Ability to settle or work abroad
If you dream of going abroad and working in the US or Europe, an Indian MBA degree is not going to help you do that.
With regards to placements after an MBA - it depends purely on your skill sets and your ability to get the job!
In India, you do have a concept of placements but getting the job purely depends on your ability to crack the interview.
MBA colleges abroad don’t have the concept of placements.
Getting a job abroad after an MBA happens through job fairs and your alumni network.
If you are from one of the top B-schools your chances of getting a job increases drastically purely based on your strong alumni network across prime companies.
So my recommendation would be to focus on getting into an MBA program which has a good brand name in order to maximize your chances of getting a job.
For more details, you could check out the in-depth analysis of whether to do an MBA in India or abroad

Hi, Thanks for the deatiled explanation. Some aditional points to your post-If you are having high experience and high package, better to go abroad. most of our Indian B-schools average salary would be around 18-30 Lakhs only(Realistic numbers, not FT raking numbers). So if you are already at 10+ package, then it is better to look in abroad options unless until if you have any commitmets in India or having a family business.

Hi there,

Are you the one who likes to stay close to the family and friends and not worry about visa or placements? If yes, Indian bschools such as ISB,IIM A,B,C which are in top 50 have got your back. They are pretty decent and somewhat good interms of ROI.

But if you're like me, who's willing to take a calculated risk to sit next to the brightest minds in the whole effin world, have debates, case studies, fun with them ; then international MBA is the one for you. Having said that , you gotta have a flair for networking as mostly this will fetch you the job you want in abroad. You gotta spend more bucks.. don't worry , you needn't take a penny, most guys take loan and repay them in 4-7 yrs once you get a decent work.

So all in all, just sit and do some soul searching and understand, how you wanna spend time in your MBA, where, what do you want, how much you can spend, how much you wanna get, where you wanna join later Answers to these will surely guide you.

Try contacting different alumni on linkedin to help you give a specific detail. All the best

Great post that summarizes all aspects. Based on my experience working with MBA aspirants who plan to apply to top B schools abroad

1. You need to be very clear that most schools abroad do not have "placements". They have career services which help you find an internship or the network to get a job.
2. You need to have the risk appetite to manage the finances and the opportunity cost.
3. Getting out of your comfort zone is extremely important too. When you are in your country - you understand the culture, food habits, working style, language. For an MBA abroad it's important to consider all these factors.

Well it depends totally on your budget.(Money)- (If you have the money then you should most definitely go for it. It is a different experience that enhances your skills and works for your development as an individual.)

MBA in India from tier I colleges like the IIMs would cost you around Rs 10-15 lakhs, the same from tier I colleges abroad would fall in the price bracket of Rs 30- 50 lakhs.

Settle Abroad? If you aim to settle abroad then you must go ahead for an MBA degree from a foreign school. It just proves to be an added advantage.

Break the Stereotypes- There are students who make a decision of going abroad just because they have grown up hearing that the education system of India is doomed, this is clearly not the case. India’s education sector for MBA is mushrooming these days. Hence, India has a plethora of options available for you.

Job Market- Your degree might be the gate pass for your journey but it is your skills that prove to be the flight that takes you to the destination. Both Indian universities and universities abroad offer good placements these days.

Indian universities are also placing students in countries other than India. There are companies that might give importance to a degree from a particular country but then the skills of the person are what can take them through.

It is a myth that it is just your university that shapes up your career. Yes, placements might help you get placed but it is your attitude and the skills that help you sustain in the company.

The job market for MBA graduates is always hungry for good individuals; all you need to do is brush up your expertise for the job market.

Well, these are the factors that usually lay the foundation of whether you get an MBA degree from India or an MBA degree abroad. Now, it is up to you to prioritize these things and then whatever suits you, should be your pick.

Hope it helps

Good Luck

Deciding whether to pursue an MBA in India or abroad depends on several factors:
1. Career Goals
  • India: If you plan to work in India or with Indian companies, an MBA from a reputable Indian institution may be more beneficial.
  • Abroad: If you aim for international exposure and wish to work globally, an overseas MBA can provide valuable insights into different markets and cultures.
2. Cost and Financial Considerations
  • India: Generally, Indian MBA programs are more affordable, with lower tuition fees and living expenses.
  • Abroad: While the cost is typically higher, many international programs offer scholarships and financial aid.
3. Curriculum and Specializations
  • India: Indian programs often focus on local business practices, economics, and regulations, which can be advantageous for understanding the domestic market.
  • Abroad: International programs might offer a broader range of specializations and a more diverse perspective on global business.
4. Networking Opportunities
  • India: Studying in India may help you build connections within the local industry, which can be crucial for career advancement.
  • Abroad: An overseas MBA often provides access to a global alumni network, which can be beneficial if you seek international opportunities.
5. Learning Environment
  • India: Consider the teaching methodologies and campus culture of Indian institutions.
  • Abroad: Many international programs emphasize experiential learning and case studies, which can enhance practical skills.

Ultimately, your decision should align with your personal and professional goals. If you're interested in flexible learning options in India, consider exploring programs available at the SimpliDistance portal which offer a variety of MBA courses from top universities in India and abroad.
