frigidxarch - While your profile does present interesting angles (undergrad pedigree & GPA, work-ex, ECAs, etc.), the competitive pool at M7's and US Top-10 (GMAT averages here) implies that aiming for a 685+ would be ideal.

All the best!

Hello!

I wrote the GMAT a few days ago and am looking for any advice as I work towards building my applications for round 1 deadlines.

  • Reach: Sloan MIT, Kellogg
  • Targets: Tuck, Yale, Haas

  • Academic: Architecture, 3.74 GPA, tier 1 university (globally) in Canada
  • GMAT: 665 (83Q, 85V, 81DI)
  • Work: Marketing and business development at a mid-size CAN-USA architecture firm, 2 years of experience at matriculation. No formal promotion, but my salary has increased 12.5% in my first year. Contributed directly to 500k+ in fees for the firm.
  • Extracurriculars: Community fundraising, university involvement (orientation week coordinator, architecture student association, volunteer photographer / graphic designer), founded run-club at work, marathon training
  • Letters of Recommendation: Both EMBA grads from top Canadian programs
  • Short-term goal: I aim to break into management consulting, with a focus on strategy, operations, or logistics.
  • Long-term goal: Strategy at an outdoor mission-driven company.

I am curious to know whether or not it would be worth re-taking the GMAT for a slightly higher score... I am quite set on round 1, and my only mocks were 625 (80Q, 82V, 81DI) and 675 (82Q, 84V, 85DI). I also recognize my lower years of work experience.

While I have reached out to several mentors with MBAs, the feedback as a whole is divided on whether or not pushing for 675-685 is worth the effort, particularly with the change to the focus edition (all have graduated many years ago). I was leaning towards not bothering, considering the tight timeline, but I know I'd regret not trying again.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you for your time!

frigidxarch,

Sharing a deeper profile evaluation, including addressing your query and some points to ponder.

  • The academic arc looks decent given the college pedigree and GPA. Though in Architecture, has it been a past feeder? Have you done that research yet? The GMAT score is likely to be a handicap and if you think you can bump it up, a retake will be highly recommended.
  • The professional profile is promising owing to the nature of your work that is in the business domain. The average experience at top schools is in the ~5 years range. Chasing the 2026 intake will lead to challenges. Read the blog and check if you've factored these in your plans? Since there hasn't been a faster than average career trajectory, this may make things even more tough. Is 12.5% a big delta compared to your industry/company average? Since on an absolute scale, it doesn't appear to be a lot.
  • While college ECs look plenty, what has been the scale/impact/legacy? That is what will determine their strength. Anything substantial since graduating? How big is the Run Club for instance?

Hope this sparks the right questions.

Feel free to reach out on mcb@mbacrystalball.com for more.

Cheers,

Hi frigidxarch,

You are applying to absolute top-notch programs so any effort that can boost your chances is going to be well worth it. A 665 is not a bad score but considering your target list, you should aim for higher and since you will regret "not trying", it makes complete sense to give it your all with one last shot.

Good luck!
