Sharing my draft CV prepared for MBB.

First GMAT test result is 540, now targeting 750+ and doing well on preparation.

Target schools - Sloan, GSB, Tepper and Tuck. Post-MBA career consideration - consulting, PE or tech.

Main question is my pre-MBA career. Being from Uzbekistan, I fall into an under-represented group. However, I have a question on whether I should stick with my career, where soon I will manage to get very big project will be responsible for project delivery and manage 30+ people, or apply to a MBB firm and then go to MBA. Which option is good for me?

Hi xtraderuz hope this finds you well

I see a lot of potential in your profile given that you have progressively handled leadership positions at the companies you worked at. If you think you can get into MBB fast enough, that will come across as a significant take-off point in your already impressive profile. However, I suggest that you do not wait long if you are targeting the 2 years MBA in the US, especially with you being an international student and someone who may want an industry switch.

Focus on giving your best shot at GMAT and present a strong application in early rounds to get a first read on how you do at your target schools. Plan your next steps accordingly.

If you are open to the idea of working in Europe/UK in the short to mid-term, you may consider applying to LBS, INSEAD, IMD, Oxbridge and HEC Paris. I foresee a good chance of scholarships for you and better job security in the tech space in this geography in the next 1-2 years.

Would be glad to advise you further after your GMAT preparation.

Best wishes

Hi,

Thank you for your comment. To apply to MBB(Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Middle-East offices) I should prepare for 2-3 months. Now I am focusing on GMAT, and if I pass the test in April, then apply and pass the interview at MBB in May-June, I may start a job in late summer earliest or in Autumn, when there are R1 deadlines. Therefore a bit confused to make priorities.

Consulting is not 100% target, due its Work-Life Balance, and even I work there pre and post MBA(mainly because they fund MBA tuition), I want to switch to the Industry after reaching EM role.

Hey xtraderuz,

Your profile is strong in terms of your career goals and target schools. It's clear that you have a specific career path in mind and that you're working to improve your GMAT score to increase your chances of getting into your desired MBA programs.

Your pre-MBA career is also noteworthy, as you mention that you're currently working on a big project and will soon be managing a team of 30+ people. This is definitely a valuable experience that would be relevant to the consulting, private equity, and tech industries, which you've listed as your post-MBA career considerations. Additionally, being from Uzbekistan and potentially being in an under-represented group, can add diversity to the MBA class and can be a positive factor in the admissions process.

As for your question, both options have their pros and cons. Sticking with your current job, you will have the opportunity to gain more experience and responsibility in your field, which could be beneficial for your MBA application and your post-MBA career. However, you risk missing out on the opportunity to gain exposure to the consulting, PE or tech industry, which you have listed as your post-MBA career considerations.

On the other hand, if you apply for a job at a MBB firm, you will gain exposure to the industry you are targeting, and it will be easier to make the transition into consulting, PE or tech after your MBA.

You must target a 720 plus in the GMAT if you are aiming for schools like MIT Sloan, Tuck, GSB, and Pepper.

If you need more help, we'd be happy to setup a call and give more pointers on how to improve your profile and the right schools you should target.

I'd say, do what you can at the earlier time. If you were through the multiple rounds of interview at McKinsey and had a job offer from them I would say, take that up now and test the consulting waters. From your post, it seems you are still waiting to apply to McK. That could itself be a long journey- first finding and then applying to a vacant position, giving multiple rounds of interviews, waiting for the coveted offer- given that it hasn't happened, its an uncertainty.

You already have ~6 years experience- which is good enough to apply to b-schools. Adcoms will be impressed with the credentials you already possess - you just have to highlight them in a perfect manner, and unfortunately your resume doesn't help you do that properly. So work hard on the resume and make it shine.

An MBA's main advantage is to help change your career. You can pitch consulting as a post MBA goal in your MBA applications and make the switch to consulting after b-school.

If you want to get a taste of consulting prior to joining MBA, you can apply for a pre MBA internship- I know that McKinsey offers it for sure. Even this experience will help you get a foot in the door once you are recruiting for summer internships.

So, to sum up- improve your GMAT score, solidify your resume (we can help) and get ready to apply this year.

I am aware of MBA students who no longer want to pursue consulting for the same reason you mentioned, after they have got some experience of it during the MBA (internships). If you are unclear about consulting as of now, I would emphasize more on the two things I mentioned:
1. Pre- MBA internship (you can apply in the Spring of the year in which you matriculate, after having an MBA admit in hand)
2. summer internship at b-school.

Any path of getting into McKinsey - pre-MBA, post-MBA is super competitive. That remains the constant in your situation :upsidedown
