Since we are post-R2 submission, I thought I would lay out a few of my experiences with interview/admission process from R1 for anyone who may be interested:
R1 submission was 7 October. I barely made the deadline (submitted at around 11:30PM Eastern time on 7 October), as the school had not been in my original consideration set. After receiving a recruiting email from the school a week prior, I researched the school and decided that I would be missing a huge opportunity if I did not apply R1. Clearly, I was right as I am now matriculating to the Tepper School next fall. The more i researched the program, the more convinced I was that it was a great match for me and my aspirations.
Aside from an automated email notifying me that my application was received, I did not hear anything from the school until two weeks later when I was notified that I needed to re-scan some of my documents. Please keep this date in mind, as that COULD mean they did not begin even reviewing my application until this time. I am not sure on this, clearly, but it appeared to me that the international applicants are reviewed first and notified first of interview offers. I would assume this is due to the scheduling difficulty for international applicants, especially if they were to choose to interview on campus. Again, I am a recent admitted applicant, and I do not have any type of inside knowledge to peg this for sure.
EDIT: It appears (at least in round 2) that there are lots of applicants from the US that have already received interview invitations, most likely meaning they aren't reviewing in a specific geographic order! Congrats!
I submit the requested documents and receive a confirmation that my application is now fully ready for review. A few more weeks pass (we are into November now) and I had not heard anything further from the school. I had a work trip coming up to Pennsylvania the week of the 18th of November, so in an attempt to be proactive, I scheduled a campus visit online with them. My hopes would be that I would get a better insight into the school, and as the timeline for interviews was becoming ever more limited, I would be able to utilize the campus visit as a symbol of interest if I was not able to make it back up for an in person interview, if i was so offered.
Days before the campus visit, I received an email notifying that I was selected for interview (around the 12-14th of November). I was extremely relieved! I quickly scheduled my interview and found a time during the same day I was going to visit campus anyhow! Post-interview, I did not hear anything back from the school until the Monday of results, and of course around 5:00 PM as indicated, they released their acceptances through email! As far as I know CMU does not call anyone, so don't get too nervous the day of results. =)
Post-acceptance, I weighed my options (Kenan-Flagler or the Tepper School, both of which I loved) and chose the Tepper School. I have submitted my deposit already, and am currently going through the credential verification process, which although is still in progress, what I have seen so far is the people at Re Vera are extremely polite and interested in helping you. They are there to verify the integrity of the process, not interrogate you as far as I can see.
SO, that is a fairly in-depth rundown of my timeline/experience.
Bonus time.... my experience on campus and in Pittsburgh:
Due to the timing of my work requirements, I had only about 30 hours in Pittsburgh, but man was it great. On the day before my interview, I arrived in town, checked into my hotel which was located downtown near the arena. I took a bus to the Oakland area / Carnegie Mellon. The bus arrives frequently, was on time, was clean, and the ride was incredibly short. After wandering around CMU and the surrounding areas for a few hours and grabbing dinner, I headed back to the hotel to prepare for my interview.
The next day, I arrived at CMU a few hours before my first event (I had a class visit, lunch, tour ,presentation, and interview scheduled for the day). I met with a 2nd year student that I had been in contact with for a cup of coffee and had a good talk about the school and admissions process for about an hour.
Following that, I checked in to the admissions office and went to visit a class. It was not the most exciting MBA class visit I had, as they had a speaker from the Accelerate Leadership Academy and I couldn't really get into the content since the program had been going on for a while. The class sizes appear to be small, as advertised with only about 30 people in this specific section.
After that, we toured the building. The facilities at the Tepper School are a bit smaller and older than most I had visited (Tuck and Kenan-Flagler) although better than other top schools (Kellogg). The facility fits the program well, though, as it creates a very intimate feel. There is a coffee lounge on the main floor (they were doing some renovations down there when I toured), a graduate student lounge, and lockers for grad students. The classrooms are nice and modern, although not as flashy as some of the other places. A brief presentation followed in an upstairs conference room and then we were off to lunch. Lunch was served in another building in the graduate student dining (no attached dining besides the coffee shop, which could be seen as inconvenient in the middle of winter, but it is also better than being over-ran by undergraduate students as well). There are also a lot of other options on campus, and overall the campus is beautiful.
Post lunch, was the interview. Mine was with Annie Julian and was by far the most pleasant, candid interview I had at any school (except Kenan-Flagler which was also a great interview). Questions included why MBA, why the Tepper School, career aspirations, and other overall "fit" questions. Behavioral, I think there was one regarding difficult time with co-workers, but I cannot recall.
Overall, the students at CMU were extremely welcoming and had a light-hearted attitude. It is not the impersonal engineering/science nerd atmosphere that they get stereotyped into. They do, as advertised, LOVE their quant/analytics though, and are very proud of that reputation.
A few takeaways for recent applicants:
- Do not get nervous about not hearing from the school between application and interview and results.
- It is referred to as "the Tepper School" not just "Tepper" and you should refer to it that way during interviews/application essays. I am not saying that you will be gigged for just "Tepper," but all students/ADCOM refer to it that way, so I would take the cue and do the same. Just like it is "The Ohio State University," not "Ohio State" according to their students.
- If you can go to Pittsburgh, GO. I don't think it is as pertinent as Tuck makes it that you visit in person, but if anything you really need to see what makes this school special because it is much more than the exposure they get. Plus, the city was beautiful. Sure there are a few rough areas, but it is the cleanest larger city I have been to in a long time.
- They love their quant, but don't be intimidated to apply. I got in and my GMAT was lopsided towards verbal (46Q 42V). You should be able to explain why the quant/analytics focused curriculum matches your educational needs and career aspirations.
- They are NOT just analytics. Their leadership focus and evolution to dissuade that opinion shows in their student body.
Things to KNOW about the Tepper School for your application/interview:
- Accelerate Leadership Center and how that will help your career goals.
- Their Concentrations and Tracks, and how they fit your career focus.
- BaseCamp (their 3+ week orientation) and how that benefits you.
- Global Treks (if having a global slant to your app)
Just a few talking points that could help you out, if of course they fit your pitch.
