check again there is a cause and effect event happening in the sentence.

Second take

it is C then

A) quickly incinerated much of the plant and animal life in North America, created a dust cloud that changed the global climate, and that is how it killed off hundreds of thousands of species throughout the world
Not sure on this one.

B) caused the killing off of hundreds of thousands of species throughout the world through the quick incinerating of much of the plant and animal life in North America and the creating of a dust cloud that changed the global climate
killing did not create the dust cloud, rather than the burning could have done that

C) caused the quick incinerating of much of the plant and animal life in North America, the creating of a dust cloud that changed the global climate, and the killing off of hundreds of thousands of species throughout the world
caused the quick burning of flora and fauna ->which created a dust cloud and the killing off of hundreds of thousands

If its not that,i am missing out on something.

I think option D is correct. here - killed off hundreds of thousands of species throughout the world by quickly incinerating much of the plant and animal life in North America and creating a dust cloud that changed the global climate. incinerating and Creating are parallel - two means by which killing happened.

IMO D must be the correct answer choice because the sentence tries to focus on a cause and effect relationship. The asteroid killed off hundreds of species ....EFFECT
CAUSE....by incinerating.... and by creating a dust cloud....

The original sentence means to say that the asteroid killed species by incinerating much of plant and animal life. In that case D should be the answer.

Creating a dust cloud seems off. Shouldn't it be created instead of creating.

Here parallelism is at play. Read "creating" along with "by quickly" -> "by quickly creating".

The asteroid that struck the Yucatan peninsula 65 million years ago quickly incinerated much of the plant and animal life in North America, created a dust cloud that changed the global climate, and that is how it killed off hundreds of thousands of species throughout the world.

A) quickly incinerated much of the plant and animal life in North America, created a dust cloud that changed the global climate, and that is how it killed off hundreds of thousands of species throughout the world

B) caused the killing off of hundreds of thousands of species throughout the world through the quick incinerating of much of the plant and animal life in North America and the creating of a dust cloud that changed the global climate

C) caused the quick incinerating of much of the plant and animal life in North America, the creating of a dust cloud that changed the global climate, and the killing off of hundreds of thousands of species throughout the world

D) killed off hundreds of thousands of species throughout the world by quickly incinerating much of the plant and animal life in North America and creating a dust cloud that changed the global climate

E) killed off hundreds of thousands of species throughout the world, quickly incinerated much of the plant and animal life in North America, and created a dust cloud that changed the global climate

In this question what did the Asteroid do.....It killed many species....by doing X and Y. Note parallel marker AND so X and Y must be parallel....so Cause led to some effect...which is most of underlined part.

Looking at the original its wrong...construction error...can be written better...what did the Asteriod do....modifier not close to what its modifying

B- Caused the killing of X....... not a great start
C- Again starting with caused...not great..
D- As I mentioned above B this fits well...X and Y are parallel...gerunds...correct choice
E- The cause effect not connected here. Although parallel structure maintained Participles parallel....i.e verb+ED.

E) killed off hundreds of thousands of species throughout the world, quickly incinerated much of the plant and animal life in North America, and created a dust cloud that changed the global climate

Option D: Although I knew there was a cause linked in the sentence, I found it hard to believe that something occuring in North America killed "species throughout the world ". The other part about "dust cloud" fits okay with "things that affected the world". I know it is your sentence so it might be hard to admit whether the meaning in the sentence is off putting, but do you see the logic in my words?

Option E - after spending 5:42 minutes and with a heavy heart knowing full well that this option does not convey the intended cause-effect, I chose Option E as it atleast conveys the the three things that happened as a List.
