People want to be loved and needed. SV and parallelism option d) is correct.

People - plural , Want- plural ; wants - singular

Please correct the OA.

All people is plural so the answer choice should have "want".

D has "want" and also maintains parallelism.

Thank god. There was no way I was going to take the GMAT confidently if the answer was B. *breathes sigh of relief*

The challenge here is to identify the initial and final non-parallel part.

Initial Non-parallel part - The Buddhist monk explained to the gathered crowd how all people want to be

Final Non-Parallel part - by other people.

now parallel the left-over part of the sentence :

Option D - loved and needed

The Buddhist monk explained to the gathered crowd how all people want to be loved by other people.
The Buddhist monk explained to the gathered crowd how all people want to be needed by other people.

Option D

want the love and the needing

love and needing have to be in the same tense, hence C is wrong.
Hope this helps!

I think both are nouns...It definitely can't be 'the love and the needed' :)

In C, "all people want the needing by other people" doesn't really sound correct.

Is there any grammatical reason also why C is not correct? Can someone explain. I also think that "love" and "needing" are both nouns; so it doesn't seem to a parallelism issue at the face of it.

Hi damyanti,

Love is an action noun, whereas needing is a simple gerund.
In general, on GMAT action nouns and simple gerunds cannot be paralleled.

Moreover if we write the two sentences separately-
The Buddhist monk explained to the gathered crowd how all people want the love by other people.
The Buddhist monk explained to the gathered crowd how all people want the needing by other people.

Both the sentences have something missing in them, making them sound incorrect.

Hope it helped.

a) want loving and needing

b) wants to be loved and need

c) want the love and the needing

d) want to be loved and needed

e) are wanting loving and needed

Main Issues:

1) Meaning: People "want to be" 2 things: loved & needed. While people can want "love" but they can't want "need" (doesn't make sense).
2) Parallelism: Loved & needed need to be parallel.

a) want loving and needing - Wrong: Meaning

b) wants to be loved and need - Wrong: 1) SV error 2) Parallelism

c) want the love and the needing - Wrong: Meaning

d) want to be loved and needed - Correct

e) are wanting loving and needed - Wrong: 1) Wrong verb (Present continuous). Need simple present. 2) Parallelism
