According to me too, the correct answer should be E. Once negated, the whole conclusion falls apart.

Hi

I am not convinced with OA. Pl help where my thinking is incorrect.

Argument Says:

The greatest chance for the existence of extraterrestrial life is on a planet beyond our solar system. The Milky Way galaxy alone contains 100 billion other suns, many of which could be accompanied by planets similar enough to Earth to make them suitable abodes of life.

So, Conclusion is "The greatest chance for the existence of extraterrestrial life is on a planet beyond our solar system." I think main phrase to focus is beyond our solar system.

Now Option B Says "Life cannot exist on other planets in our solar system." If We negate this : Life CAN exist on other planets in our solar system, argument breaks. We do not require to go beyond our solar system

Whereas E says : It is likely that life on another planet would require conditions similar to those on Earth. Negating this option: It is NOT likely that life on another planet would require conditions similar to those on Earth. So Life can exist anywhere in out Solar System or beyond our Solar System Hence Argument does not breaks apart.

Please help to correct my reasoning.

Bunuel, do you know the source of this question? I don't recognize it, so I'm skeptical that it's from an official source...

Ah, OK -- thank you for letting me know, Bunuel! That would help explain why the OA is debatable -- I think that a lot of the verbal questions in the GMAT Club archive were drafted for the GMAT Club tests, but never quite made it in. In any case, it's clearly not an official question.

For anybody struggling on this, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Some of you are probably tired of hearing me say this, but GMAC spends between $1500 and $3000 developing each official question, and even the best test-prep companies (and my brothers and sisters here at GMAT Club!) can't compete with that. On quant, non-official questions are usually still good practice; on verbal, the imperfections in questions like these can render them almost completely useless. And clearly, this one is flawed, sadly.

So please don't lose sleep over this one!
