(A) The first is a fact presented by audiologists; the second is evidence which proves this fact..................First is not a fact. It's the opinion of some audiologists. Reject it.

(B) The first is a theoretical prediction, the second is a conclusion to the argument............................First is the opinion of a few audiologists not a theoretical prediction. Reject it.

(C) The first is an opinion shared by certain audiologists; the second is a fact that supports this opinion...................Seems fine

(D) The first is a premise that presents a future situation, the second is an explanation for the circumstances of this situation...............First is not a premise. In fact it's a conclusion. Reject it.

(E) The first is a viewpoint shared by a number of professionals; the second is an inference based on this viewpoint........................First is not a premise. The second is not an inference. In fact, it's a premise. Reject it.

OA should be C

The music at live events and entertainment venues is played at much higher volume levels than it was 50 years ago. Some audiologists believe that hearing disorders will become more commonplace. Damage done to the auditory system is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to repair. Although some people are aware that music at very high volumes can cause damage, many refrain from taking the necessary precautions to prevent such damage.

In the argument given, the two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?

(A) The first is a fact presented by audiologists; the second is evidence which proves this fact. Incorrect

second is not prove first, it support first

(B) The first is a theoretical prediction, the second is a conclusion to the argument. Incorrect

second is not conclusion

(C) The first is an opinion shared by certain audiologists; the second is a fact that supports this opinion. Correct

first is an opinion and second support first

(D) The first is a premise that presents a future situation, the second is an explanation for the circumstances of this situation. Incorrect

second is an opinion, not presents a future situation

(E) The first is a viewpoint shared by a number of professionals; the second is an inference based on this viewpoint. Incorrect

second is not and inference

C is the answer in my opinion.

(A) The first is a fact presented by audiologists; the second is evidence which proves this fact.-----> First is not a fact. Its a prediction/viewpoint of some audioligists. The second is also not proving it. ELIMINATE

(B) The first is a theoretical prediction, the second is a conclusion to the argument.---> Could be theoretical prediction but 2nd is not a conclusion. The author is not trying convey that as a msg. ELIMINATE

(C) The first is an opinion shared by certain audiologists; the second is a fact that supports this opinion.----> Seems correct.

(D) The first is a premise that presents a future situation, the second is an explanation for the circumstances of this situation.---> Not at all a premise.

(E) The first is a viewpoint shared by a number of professionals; the second is an inference based on this viewpoint.----> First is correct but second is not an inference of that viewpoint

2nd is more of a statement that explains/supports the 1st statement. it doesn't seem to infer from 1st statement.

I wil mark D as the correct answer.

hi IanStewart AndrewN

the question is general one:-

many refrain from taking the necessary precautions to prevent such damage.

Can you please suggest how it can be a fact?
Is not it more like a opinion /judgement ?

Fact should have some figures : xx% people xxxx such damage

please clarify IanStewart AndrewN

A fact is just something that is true. "Many GMAT test takers study for the test" is a fact - it's not a very precise fact, but it's still true. It's not an opinion or a judgment, provided we agree on what "many" means. If we're making an argument, often we'd want more precise information, so it might be more useful to know (and here I'm just making up a number) "99% of GMAT test takers study for the test" but facts don't need to be numerically precise to be factual.

I was confused between C and D and finally chose C, didn't get a definite answer with D and hence didn't select it.
Please find below my understanding of the question

(A) The first is a fact presented by audiologists; the second is evidence which proves this fact.
The first is the opinion of the audiologists , second is not the evidence . Hence its incorrect

(B) The first is a theoretical prediction, the second is a conclusion to the argument.
Its not a theoretical prediction , second is not the conclusion . Hence its incorrect

(C) The first is an opinion shared by certain audiologists; the second is a fact that supports this opinion.
Yes its true, Yes its a fact which is supporting the opinion of the audiologists

(D) The first is a premise that presents a future situation, the second is an explanation for the circumstances of this situation.
Very far fetched, yes its a future situation that the AL are predicting, second is not the explanation for the circumstances. Hence incorrect

(E) The first is a viewpoint shared by a number of professionals; the second is an inference based on this viewpoint.
Yes its a viewpoint, second is not an inference hence incorrect
